    In Australia, we don't have indicators on our vehicles, instead, we have confirmicators. These are used almost exclusively to confirm the maneuver we have just completed.

    The mini roundabout near my house, many drivers when they want to turn right, they just turn immediate right without going around the roundabout or even making half an attempt to go around it exiting on the wrong side of the road.
    Besides that, it is a 4 way mini roundabout and on the main thoroughfare, they don't even slow down or look to see if any traffic is coming from the side roads, which one cannot see until at the roundabout. I'm surprised there hasn't been a serious accident yet, I've certainly startled a few drivers who have come racing up thinking they won't have to give way, and then they stamp on the brakes when they see me drive out of the side road onto the roundabout.
    The state of driving standard is going down the pan in this country.

      The one by me too. After numerous accidents, roadworks have concluded turning it into a proper raised roundabout. Let's see some clown try and drive over this one. 🤔😉😂

    I worked for Peterborough Development Corporation in 1970's who were one of the first Authorities to install mini-roundabouts and I had the opportunity to discuss their use with PDC's senior highway engineers. They stated that the roundabouts were designed to define priority at the junctions and the painted disc in the centre was of no other use than to reinforce the principle, it should not be considered an obstacle around which to manoeuvre. A very high proportion of mini-roundabouts are laid out such that to treat them as an obstacle for even short wheelbase vehicles would result in a tortuous manoeuvre that limits vehicle control and scrubs tyres unnecessarily and wastes fuel. Driving over the mini-roundabout, observing the priority does not in anyway make the manoeuvre any more dangerous and could be said to be safer given that the vehicle is under better control. Look at the drone footage and you will see that the blue van, whose wheelbase is similar to a cars, and a car turning right both naturally drive over the central disc

      Which is the rational used by drivers at a mini roundabout near me. Physically impossible or dangerous for most vehicles to try avoid the painted centre disc.

      @@gordonlinton3555 One other point that occurred to me was that two wheeled vehicles could straight line through a mini-roundabout without running over the central disc, so why are car drivers supposed to stay off it? As a motorbike rider, in my experience roundabouts, whether mini or not seem to attract lethal amounts of diesel spillage so that anything other than a straight line is best avoided and the least leaning over on right hand turns, the better..

      @@planet_69 the mini roundabout is also in design a method of allowing H.G.V. traffic to negotiate a junction where a roundabout cannot be constructed as there is a demand at that junction by H.G.V . traffic

      Many 'modern' mini-roundabouts, where I live - Milton Keynes (and yes I was also a Highway Engineer in MK during the 1970's), have a central island with two concentric circles in different colours. Many small vehicles 'can' avoid driving over the central circle with ease, but avoiding both does mean driving slowly with considerable tyre scrub.
      This means that the Highway Code is ambiguous in that do we need to avoid BOTH circles? LOCAL police appear to feel we should.
      Luckily it no longer affects me - I gave up driving about 8 months ago - due to vision issues - although being a passenger has clarified that many other drivers should also give up driving on the same grounds, and it appears many have worse vision than mine! 💩

    Thank you for all your advice, and I wish common sense was not such a rare commodity. When I was driving my van, registered as an HGV motorcaravan, and bigger than many lorries, I often had to straddle the white line approaching junctions, including mini roundabouts, because I knew how far the back of my van moved in the opposite direction to the way I was turning. Unfortunately, many drivers appear to be unaware of this, and I often had cars coming up beside me despite their having to cross the middle of the road to do so, and leaving me no room to turn. The Highway Code is very good, but there should be more emphasis on allowing enough room for large vehicles, because too many drivers seem to believe that a rigid vehicle can bend in the middle to make room for them. I also found that some mini roundabouts were extremely tight, especially when turning right and I occasionally had to do a three-point turn to clear cars waiting to enter the roundabout from my exit route.

    One difference from standard roundabouts is that at a mini-roundabout there isn’t time to signal usefully as you pass the exit before the one you are taking. Consequently, you need to be more fastidious in signalling your intentions as you approach the mini-roundabout.

      Give way to the right to traffic that is already on the roundabout. Traffic approaching the roundabout from the right should wait at the give way line until it is safe to proceed.

      Unless you're a BMW/Audi/Mercedes owner. Those cars come with built in right of way as standard.

    Another great video thanks. The most common indicating mistake I see on roundabouts is indicating right to go straight on.
    Only seems to be the more ‘senior’ generation that do this.
    Not sure if that’s how they were taught back in the day.

      But it is not always 'straight' on. At what angle does it become a right turn? 185deg? 200deg? And when you enter, you may not be able to see what the angle is. The important signal is the exit one. In some countries the entry signal is either not required or banned, as it can be confusing; it certainly has little utility.

      My observation is that it is most often learner drivers or younger ones ; giving the impression that it is more recent teaching .
      This practice is absolutely NOT correct and is made very clear in HC , the ministry of transport ’Driving’ publication and Roadcraft ( all versions ) .
      I too hate when an oncoming vehicle approaches , trafficating right , so I give way , only for them to change their mind and take the exit before me , wasting my time and fuel .
      Also bad if I am following someone onto the roundabout who is trafficating right and I am going straight ahead .
      I can legitimately pass to the left of right turning traffic ; if such a vehicle incorrectly changes their mind , I will give a very long horn warning , if need be avoiding them , but usually making them aware they did wrong .

      @@Tensquaremetreworkshop I’m talking about straight on. I.e 180 degrees or before, on small islands where you can see straight across. Entry signals help keep traffic flowing. If you’re a junction looking right and someone is indicating their intentions, it allows you to pull out safely. Without this you’d have to sit and wait and judge their intentions causing delay. Entry signals aid the flow of traffic and ease congestion. You could be sitting there quite a while otherwise.
      I also check the body language of the car as stated by the BlackBeltBarrister. The right signal must be accompanied by the car moving across the the far lane of the island.
      As time goes on, and less people are on the roads who didn’t take a theory test, I expect the situation to improve. Becoming confused or not knowing how to indicate is an issue on today’s busy roads.

      @@Tensquaremetreworkshop If the straight ahead road is around the 12oclock position , and on the advance direction sign is the thicker line then it shows it is a continuation of the road you are on .
      Signals on the approach help following traffic to know where you are going , as well as traffic approaching on other roads and can be beneficial to others .
      Of course signals should only be given where they benefit other road users , hence the importance of observation and awareness of other traffic .

      @@derekheeps1244 There is complexity here. 'roundabouts' range from mini right up to what may be considered a one-way system. At heart, a conventional roundabout is a circular one way system, which you join via a T junction. On a 'normal' one-way system you would not consider signaling right- it would be an illegal direction. So, the question becomes- at what size 'roundabout' does one start signaling what your exit choice is before you even enter the system? Especially when you have no idea how large it is? And what if there are more than three exits? how many are 'right'?
      Who can make use of this signal? Not those already on the roundabout, or probably following vehicles. For those entering in front, no signal and right signal have the same meaning- do not proceed as the vehicle is remaining on the roundabout. Only the left signal has value- the vehicle is exiting before you, so you may enter. The problem you are experiencing is not the incorrect right signal, it is the lack of the left signal.

    I've always considered them as a priority indicator and as I consider the videos example to be a huge mini roundabout you see an entire flat bed and a entire estate on the roundabout at the same time I consider my car to be a large vehicle on normal mini roundabouts the middle bit is just a speed bump.

    Great video showing that COMMON SENSE ~ which sadly isn't always that common is the best way to avoid accidents along with approaching with caution AND looking at the driver to observe his body language. At the 'Magic Roundabout' in Hemel Hemstead (multiple mini-roundabouts around one huge one in the middle), caution, indication and eye contact are essential making it one of the best roundabouts ever to clear thousands of cars every hour. Very few accidents occur because each motorist has to drive slowly and closely observe others to avoid collision in the event of error.

    Very useful piece will circulate to our local chat rooms,
    From my studies when proposing changes to our existing troublesome mini roundabout .
    1. Double Mini roundabouts are designed for small residential estates. - ours is on a busy A road and is used by many HGVs.
    2. The roundabout is 2 Meters narrower than is allowed in the design handbook.
    3. General understanding is that you give way to traffic coming from the right-
    e.g Always give priority to the traffic coming from the right, unless you have been directed otherwise by signs, road markings or traffic lights.
    - The legislation says give way to traffic from the right in rotation I believe. There should be a change to the Highway code booklet I believe.
    4. Mini roundabouts have a designed traffic speed of 20- 24mph.
    5. Raised centers of roundabouts cause considerable noise 24x7 when driven over by HGVs at 25mph and above.
    6. Implementation designs are very difficult to get changed by cash strapped councils.

    I had been driving many many years prior to mini roundabouts were introduced. It wasn’t long before theses roundabouts - often placed at quite small T junctions without any other ‘adjustments’ to the approaches - were being used as a means of executing ‘U’ turns especially by the infamous white delivery vans. Minis do not in such tight configurations lend themselves to good positioning as, unlike a full size roundabout which most usually has at least two lanes around it, minis have only one. If going straight on the distance from your exit to the second ( second exit at a ‘T’ intersection) is so short that indicate you are leaving the miniroundabout at the second not the first would, following the rules conceivably confuse a driver waiting to enter the mini from your left into thinking you are about to turn left! I never signal to exit a tiny mini roundabout if I am going straight on for this reason. Only two signals, in these circumstances, are unambiguous: left to turn left and right to execute an extreme right turn, in other words a ‘U’ turn. Which, from a couple of near misses on very small mini roundabout junctions, I personally think should not just be “avoided” per the highway code, they should be banned; except in emergencies and for emergency services where feasible.

    In the filmed example, turning right and avoiding the centre is a tortuous route- and can contribute to the state of the road (modern wide tyres scrub in tight turns). What possible advantage is there in not treating it as a junction? In other words, a roundabout for priority, a junction for vehicle movement. Many, if not most, people do...

    Sometimes the exits aren't physically in the same place as on the signs on approaching the roundabout - so I've always said you should treat 'left', 'straight' and 'right' wrt 12 o'clock as shown on the sign, not the physical location (which only makes sense when considering people who've not been there before).
    I do wonder, however, how sat-navs deal with this sort of thing when instructing you to 'go straight' or 'turn right', etc.

    I drive an Audi, and I am unable to find the section/chapter in the Highway Code which applies specifically to my car, eg not using indicators, having absolute priority in any circumstance etc. Can you help?

    The common problem is that a car enters the roundabout and then another car moving much faster comes on from the first car’s right. This second car believes that the first car should have waited, so giving way to traffic not on the roundabout but intending to bully their way through. If there is a collision it of course now looks as if the first car failed to give way to traffic from the right.

    Another great and informative video. I would like to mention that as I understand things, if a driver signals and yields, (flashed lights/waves etc.), lo allow another person priority, (Such as in the everyone arrives at the same time at the mini roundabout scenario), should an incident occur as a consequence then the "helpful" driver may well be liable in any claims. 🤔

    LBCs Mystery Hour show covered the everyone arriving at the same time at a mini roundabout scenario.
    It was explained that one road usually has right of way based on the roads seniority to the other approaches and that this road has a different style of give way marking. As I listened to the explanation I happened to be walking past a mini roundabout and confirmed the marking on one approach was different. But interestingly the drone footaged shown here all approaches had the same markings. So now I'm not so sure.

    Many people are scared of the Magic Roundabout in Swindon. But when you think about it, it's actually really simple: You treat each mini roundabout as a single roundabout with the corresponding rules. Suddenly it's not that difficult any more. All you need to know is which exit you need and the rest just falls into place.

      @@tobeytransport2802 erm, no. The individual roundabouts are all going the standard way. I think your confusion comes from this (or similar) descriptions: "Its unusual design consists of five mini-roundabouts arranged around a sixth central, anti-clockwise roundabout." But the "central roundabout" is irrelevant, as you're not driving that, it's not something you encounter. You're only navigating the individual five mini-roundabouts, or better, a subset of that depending on where you're going. So the standard rules apply to each of the five mini-roundabouts.

      @@mda5003 Armin is correct, you don't go the wrong way around the middle one because the middle one isn't a roundabout, it's a bit of green space surrounded by 5 mini-roundabouts.

      @@tlangdon12 Except that it is not a bit of green space - it is just a tarmac circle in the middle which is on your left-hand side as you negotiate the outer mini-roundabouts. Technically, the middle section is not a roundabout but it used to be, albeit considerably larger, so in that sense you now go around it the wrong way.

    Reading the body language of other road users is so much more important than being able to see where they are indicating. This is because everyone gives out body language but certain drivers don't indicate like at all but you'll still be able to read the body language by looking at how the wheels are turned and their position in the road and if possible where the driver is looking.

      I agree. An old sailing instructor of mine once told me, "It's not good enough to know that you need to give way to a larger vessel, you have to let other captain see that you know that you need to give way. If you are giving way, do so clearly, so that they know you know what to do." It's a lesson I have used in the air as a pilot, and when driving. Your position in the road can tell other road users alot if they have eyes to see it.

    Thanks for the explanation. What about the situation when two cars are in paraller and the right hand side car wants to leave the round about? Does the left hand side car needs to give a way or the right hand side car is on wrong line (if there are any lines).

    What about cars approaching the roundabout from your right that actually haven't reached the roundabout yet? The code seems to suggest you only need to give way to vehicles on the roundabout already...if you need to give way to cars approaching the roundabout, perhaps too fast anticipating they have no need to slow due to there being no one approaching from ahead that they would need to give way to...do you need to give way to them? If so, how far down the road is the threshold? ...or is it just a matter of sensibilities and the potential for an accident and the need to avoid that eventuality?

      I've asked this question too. Perhaps "black belt barrister" - could we have an answer to this ? ( "how far back does traffic from your right start to acquire precedence" ) It is a SPECIFIC issue that really only applies to mini roundabouts as follows, ( and I'm surprised you haven't covered it in your video.)
      On a large "normal" roundabout - traffic approaching from your right invariably is "already on the roundabout" - so the question of "traffic approaching from your right is fairly self evident in terms of "established" priority" .
      HOWEVER - on a mini island, traffic "approaching from your right" can be clearly seen well before such traffic reaches the island ( and as such - vehicles in that situation have yet to cross the hashed lines thus ..establishing "being on the island" )
      And ... of course, human nature being what it is... many vehicles thus approaching from your right will simply "plough on regardless" - whilst "you" are sat there watching such traffic go by... ( ie: just the same as you would be doing if you were at a T junction or cross roads)
      Now ... there is such a "classic" situation where I live ... and... WOE BETIDE if you should DARE to enter the mini roundabout when a vehicle is approaching from your right some tens or even 100's of yards away - where you will then invariably get a flurry of signals and vocal instruction from the "other driver of that vehicle " - none of which are to be found in the highway code.
      This mini roundabout is a constant source of gossip on the local Fbook group - and the default opinion seems to be that the "give way to the right" rule seems to be the only concern. That is to say - anyone daring to enter where traffic "on your right" can be seen from a distance BEFORE it reaches the roundabout - gets bad publicity - which I believe is incorrect,
      Put another way - If one enters the island whilst traffic is approaching on your right - but such traffic is at a distance - (and therefore- such traffic has "yet to establish" any such priority over "you" entering) implies that you are making a perfectly correct manouvre? - and -indeed going to a logical conclusion here - we could extend the "distance of traffic coming from the right argument to 100s /1000s yards and more (or metres if you prefer) which - on the one hand becomes a nonsensical argument BUT .... on the other hand - rather implies a point at where such traffic clearly has no bearing on your decision to enter the mini island. ( as of course such traffic at a distance has ample time to adjust speed and position to take account of your prior action.
      That is:
      In any case - its a roundabout - NOT a race track!

    It’s worth discussing what give way to traffic on the right means. I believe it means give way to traffic already on the roundabout, not traffic approaching some distance away. Consider a T-junction converted into a mini RAB: approaching traffic on what they consider to be the ‘main’ rd will often not slow down and continue across the roundabout if the oncoming ‘main’ rd traffic is clear, completely ignoring emerging traffic on the left that has already entered the RAB whilst they are still approaching.

      No, because that leads to racing to be first on and causing more damage should an accident occur. If " already on the roundabout" was meant it would say that but it does not.

      The law is due to be changed on that point so that you have to consider traffic approaching from your right , and give way if it appears that they will be on the roundabout before you can clear it .

So much so, that when indicating right I am usually forced to stop on the roundabout because I KNOW the oncoming driver is very unlikely to give way to me, when I am on his right and clearly indicating accordingly.

      No, the Highway Code clearly says "approaching from the right" and has a separate bullet for "traffic already on the roundabout":
      Rule 185
      When reaching the roundabout you should
      - give priority to traffic approaching from your right, unless directed otherwise by signs, road markings or traffic lights
      [..]
      - watch out for all other road users already on the roundabout; be aware they may not be signalling correctly or at all
      The "on the roundabout" part is mainly for slower cars ahead of you or multi-lane roundabouts where people might not signal when the change lane to leave the roundabout etc

      Why do so many people get this wrong? Give way to traffic _approaching_ from your right, not give way to traffic on your right already on the roundabout. Otherwise the give way would suddenly switch to giving way to traffic on your left if they got to the roundabout very slightly before you.

    The problem with mini roundabouts is speed. Many set off from the give way line at the same speed as they would set off for one of normal size. This gives little time because of the limited space available for other motorists to take in what is happening and to react accordingly. The Highway Code ought to advise drivers at mini roundabouts to proceed onto the roundabout slowly. There is thus more chance of avoiding a collision if someone makes a mistake or, to use your drone example, if 3 vehicles arrive at the same time. All are reluctant to proceed in case they are in collision, and therefore seemingly at fault, with the vehicle to their right. I have a local mini-mini roundabout in which this problem has arisen many times, leading to a standoff, because each vehicle takes up the whole of one side of the roundabout. This is wholly unsatisfactory unless each proceeds at walking pace. Further, it is impossible at this roundabout for my car, which is 15.5 feet long, to make a 300 degree right turn without encroaching on the centre markings. I don't think they are fit for purpose.

    Rule 185 is ambiguous because it says
    When reaching the roundabout you should
    1 Give priority to traffic approaching from your right.
    Other RUclips channels have interpreted this to mean any vehicle even if it is not even on the roundabout. This could involve drivers giving way to a vehicle approaching at speed from 150 metres or more before the roundabout and maybe out of sight.

      Typical of much legislation, standards, and other such documents. If I could pass one law, it would be that all groups writing rules must have a software engineer on the team. Ambiguous software bites you! Not foolproof, but would help a lot.

      Agreed. Some drivers think that approaching any type of roundabout in an aggressive manor and at high speed gives them priority. If you are already on and they cross over the hatched white lines then they are at fault. If they approach in a sensible manner then you would have completed your manoeuvre and be well out of the way by the time they enter the roundabout.

      @@thewriter6546 Yes and rule 184 talks about adjusting your speed to those around you so flying onto a roundabout at 30 mph is in breach of the HWC when another vehicle is already safely using the roundabout doing 5mph (having stopped previously at give way lines) But no one picks up on this on RUclips. Also in congested traffic all road markings are obscured by the traffic over them. And half the people entering the roundabout have never used it before and are relying on sat nav instructions.

    Something you didn't mention is that often mini-roundabouts are installed to replace what was a T-junction but as a cost saving measure, the approach roads are not re-engineered to slow traffic and even out the priority. The result of this (and your drone footage is an excellent example) is that there is usually a more direct path across the roundabout from some lanes and drivers often straight line over the roundabout with little or no reduction in speed and this of course increases the danger for all. The theory concerning mini-roundabouts is fine but as ever, the practicalities can lead to certain difficulties.

    Thanks, but …. The situation that I am still not sure about is when I have found myself stationary at the entrance to a mini roundabout and a car is approaching the mini roundabout to my right. Do I have right of way because I was at the roundabout first, or does the approaching car have right of way. If I proceed, then I am in the roundabout before the other car is, so that would suggest that I then have right of way. If the approaching car is far enough away then presumably I also clearly have right of way. But there is that intermediate situation where I have not yet moved into the roundabout and the approaching car to the right is far enough away to potentially stop. Very confused about this

    How many times have I been at a converted T-junction where 3 vehicles stopped waiting for someone to make the first move. There are also many mini roundabout with exits at crazy angles making not violating the white centre mark vertically impossible. On balance I’m not a fan.

    As an example, who has right of was on a standard 4way mini roundabout/small standard roundabout. If two cars approach at the same time, one intends to go straight over so doesn't signal immediately, the opposing one signals right, so therefore plans to cut across the path of the other?
    I always assume that if I was going straight over I have right of way as the opposing car will cut across my path, as both cars are facing each other, they both technically have a car to their right in a sense.

      Aha, so YOU are one of those people who think they have right of way because they are going straight on, you DO NOT have right of way. You need to give way to traffic already on the roundabout such as someone who will cross your path by turning right. Obviously the right turners absolutely MUST indicate to let you know where they are going.

    I was of the belief that if you are going straight on, and in a single or left hand lane, then you do not indicate before turning off. Am I wrong? Sometimes I do indicate to let another car know, and it seems right that it avoids any confusion or hesitancy of - is he going straight or is he just not bothering to indicate right? Was this changed?

    someone nearly ran into the side of my car from the right (on a mini roundabout), I knew i could pull out and make my turn but the vehicle from the right just drove straight across the island (he was in a car), he stopped and gave me a filthy look, from what BB just said he should have negotiated the island and I would have got round no problem...

    The simple explanation is that first one on the mini roundabout or passing the lines to enter the roundabout has priority. This is because only one vehicle will fit on the roundabout at one time

    Further to my earlier observations it has to be said that a very high percentage of mini- roundabouts are simply painted at the notional geometric intersection of a ‘T’ junction without any regard for or reconfiguration of the original junction, nor indeed its impact on the practicalities of manoeuvring around a circle that is, in practice, too small to circumnavigate in the manner the “authority” intended or imagined it would or should be used. Without reconfiguring the original ‘T’ junction, simply placing a notional roundabout at its “centre” is bound to be fraught with problems - mostly for the motorist. The ‘T’ junction should be completely remodelled to allow appropriate room for vehicles to execute turns without unduly testing the limits of the steering capability of the average vehicle. But of course, reconfiguring the junction would cost money and, in some cases, would probably be impractical so, none get modified at all other than a few extra markings and a roundel at the geometric centre of the junction…………and, finally, what IS the correct signal for a ‘U-turn on a mini-roundabout? Can’t seem to find it in the Highway Code!

    I was told by an instructor that you should only indicate when you are leaving a roundabout. Mini roundabouts I indicate as if it was a junction.

    Magic roundabout Swindon, multiple mini roundabouts where it’s actually impossible to follow the law if you in a long vehicle as there isn’t room to clear one before stopping at the next one. Hence why there is always chaos there as you clear the first then block lol exits as you wait to clear the next one.

    Signalling at a mini roundabout is slightly different to a normal roundabout. On approach, turning left at first exit then indicate left as normal. But going straight ahead no indicator is necessary as you pass the exit before yours because there's no benefit. Also turning right, you indicate right then as you exit there is no need to indicate left, but you can if you want to.

    The problem I have with mini-roundabouts (and the video doesn't show a particlarly "mini" example), is that many drivers have the perception that the road on which they are travelling is the "major" one, usually the one with most traffic. So they approach the roundabout and expect all traffic on the other "minor" roads to yield. This is perhaps fine when cars arrive at the same time, but often I might be at the dotted line whilst the other car on the major road to my right, is many yards from it, and when I then pull out on to the roundabout even though the other car has not even reached it, I receive angry horn blasts and hand signals from the driver of the approaching car.

    There is a large roundabout with large junctions close to my house that causes a lot of confusion. When I reach the roundabout there is a junction to the left and a junction straight on. I know you are meant to stay to the left when going straight on but most people go to the right of the junction as only the 2 exits. Is that wrong? Cheers to anyone that replies 👍

      One of the issues here is that the guidance on lanes has changed over the years. It's why there ought to be compulsory highway code lessons and/or tests every few years.

      It is good practice to exit in the lane you entered in : this allows a vehicle entering alongside you to circulate with you and take the same exit .

      And the same people also sit at an entrance waiting to turn left but done pull out because they think other people should be exiting the roundabout in the space they want to be in.

      I think the problem is that while every learner driver tries to learn the Highway Code, they only do so from their point of view, they don't think about this from another drivers point of view. If they did, they would realise that other cars can leave a roundabout from any of the lanes, and therefore undertaking any car you have given way to is a really bad idea.

    Just to fill in the garage continued to fit the new belt hopingit wouldfix the car.

    If you have 2 mini roundabouts together and you ant to go straight ahead. 12 o'clock on both of them. Do you indicate left to come off of the first one even if that would make it look like you are turning left at the second one?

      Indicating to exit a mini roundabout isn't useful or necessary, by the time the indicator has flashed once you've already turned off. You don't normally indicate left to go straight on anyway.

    At 11:00 we see a silver vehicle approaching with caution from the right, but just crossing the give-way (it’s following the tractor & trailer) there is also the pick-up truck in picture at the next entry/exit at least ten feet from their give-way road marking, the silver vehicle seems to be very cautious, it appears it is giving the tractor & trailer space to clear the roundabout before committing to progress through the junction, so that in that event the blue vehicle at the “left hand” road could progress and turn right (if that is its intention) should the tractor stop suddenly. Two seconds later the silver vehicle has moved on, its halfway across the give way markings, and the pick-up to the left is still behind their give way, clearly the pick-up should have given way to the silver vehicle, but it barrels through, an accident only being averted because the silver vehicle wasn’t assuming a right of way and was taking notice of what was happening around them. How come you didn’t comment on this except to say that the three vehicles “arrived at the same time, when they didn’t (silver was first, blue second and flatbed last, and that the “flatbed lorry takes the initiative”. I all three did as the silver and blue did then there would be no chance of any collision whereas if they all acted as the flatbed did then there could well have been a two or three way collision. Silver was taking the initiative, at an appropriate speed, the lorry just selfishly ploughed on.
    You also warned of and explained multiple (mini) roundabouts, but you failed to also cover the perils of the situation of two approach lanes to a mini roundabout, have you not come across those?

    At 11.10mins it seems the vehicle driving straight over has already entered the roundabout by being over the give way lines. Yet the white lorry disregards this/take the initiative and completes their manoeuvre first.
    Who would have been at fault had been a collision?

    Could you please do a video on "who owns a motor vehicle"? it States on the V5 that this just shows who the Registered Keeper of the vehicle is, not who the legal owner of the vehicles is. So, how do I prove I own my car?
    More importantly, if I buy a car from someone and I am now the Registered Keeper on the V5 and have a receipt from the person I bought it from, how can a third party company (such as a bank or loan provider) claim ownership and take it off me? (Luckily, that has never happened to me - I just think this would be good for a lot of your viewers)

      If a car was originally acquired on a finance agreement, it belongs to the bank until such time as the debt is paid in full. If you buy a used car you need to check for any previous finance agreements. If the debt is still outstanding, the bank can still reclaim it.
      Also, if you buy a car that was stolen, the rightful owner (the person it was stolen from) can reclaim it if he has proof of original purchase.

    One little thing to clarify you quoted highway code as saying avoid u turns at mini roundabouts...it wasn't clear if this was a 'should avoid ' or a 'must avoid' situation...and by upturn does it mean going all the way around the roundabout to exit at the same road from which you entered but going the other way? Or something else. I'm a bit surprised to learn if that's actually forbidden but I wouldn't be surprised to learn it's discouraged or people are warned to be very careful as few would expect it and a mini roundabout being small I suppose things may happen rather quickly!

    In Totnes in Devon, there is a roundabout at the Seven Stars pub that is known for drivers cutting across, there was even a piece about it in the local newspaper, This would have been a great opportunity for the police to enforce some order, but their comment was that there was no law against it, what a cop-out.

      You should use them wherever it benefits other road users .
      If there is no one present who can benefit from a signal then they are not required.
      In advanced driving you are taught to observe and consider whether signals are required ; having to think about it for every hazard heightens your awareness of everything on and around the road .

      @@Alan-xxxxxx I can understand that people walking too many dogs does open more chance of a loss of control. I myself have never walked more than two because I have only ever had two, and not because of what the current legislation is. However, I do vaguely remember something being said about new legislation saying that two dogs is the maximum. I'm unsure whether this is local legislation to where I lived at the time (Pembrokeshire), or if it was national, or even just Wales or England.

      I sincerely hope there is no such law. People should walk no more than the number of dogs they can control. We don't need any more laws to prescribe behaviour that should be governed by common sense. A friend of mine has four very small, very old rescue dogs which she has under complete control. They are no threat to anyone. No law should stop her from walking them.

    I suspect most drivers do not appreciate that mini roundabouts are just a version of an ordinary roundabout. I have caused obvious consternation as I swung round the dot turning right as somebody approached and drove straight on, they seemed very unhappy that two cars could occupy the roundabout at the same time.

    Well the mini roundabouts around here are so small that any vehicle with a turning circle beyond London taxi is in capable. My 4x4 for example you would have to reverse on the roundabout to make it to your exit. We are along way from looking inward, Londonia. Also advanced police training does disagree with this. Saying that I know you are correct on all accounts.

    Very informative.. But as we all know it only takes one person to hesitate when they hsve right of way causing utter confusion... Plus IMO people approach these far too fast - especially when one
    exit is obscured as they assume they have right of way. so do not slow down.
    In addition our roads are abissmal compared to some other countries and road markings are not refreshed regularly which doesn't help!
    Unfortunately we live in times where some people just don't have time for anyone else... makes mini roundabouts a lottery 😂

    I was nearly killed on a new mini-roundabout recently. I had the right of way, but another driver appeared from the right and sped over the round out. Fortunately I braked in time. It's called a roundabout - cars are meant to go around it not over it. It cannot serve its function as a traffic calming and safety feature if drivers don't use it right.

    I'm far from the best driver and I wouldn't say roundabouts are my strongest part, but from what I see everyday, makes me thing otherwise, I've got a feeling most drivers are seeing a roundabout for the first time. Multi lane roundabouts are like kryptonite for some people. I thing the highway code and instructors should concentrate more on them, we all as a society would benefit from it, in some cases lives will be saved.

    80 % approx. of the centre rise that forms the island is missing , all three arrows are missing and i will read up on the approach markings differences . this is what we are suffering in Britain lack of meeting spec.

    I think the biggest problem with roundabouts is the lack of consideration for other road users, some drivers will basically bully their way through. Easier to giveaway and even come to a stop to ensure that myself and my vehicle are safe even if it adds a few seconds on to my journey.

    At 11:00 the blue car (from the bottom right corner) was already on the roundabout, so they should've had priority, but I agree, the driver of the small lorry did the right thing by moving first.
    Indicating right in a roundabout should not be a thing. Rule 186 says signal right and approach in the right-hand lane. To me, that means I have to indicate because I have to change lanes. But it does not say keep indicating to the right, which is what most people do, even when leaving the roundabout. Based on rule 186 I see no reason to indicate to the right when approaching a roundabout with single lanes at all entrances since there is no right-hand lane to move to. I'm from Hungary and our traffic law (called KRESZ and it gives a clear answer to who has the right of way in most possible situations, when not it's asking for a mutual agreement, just like we saw in this video) says not indicating while being on a roundabout means the vehicle is staying on the roundabout. This works a lot better and creates far less confusion. My problem with the Highway Code is it makes difference for example between waiting and parking, but doesn't give a definition to either of them. I tried to find these missing definitions elsewhere, but couldn't, so I have to use what I learnt in Hungary.

    I like how the highway code is like do this do that but also be aware that BMW drivers exist and that they might do things they are not supposed to and not do things they are supposed to.

    The Plough Junction in Hemel, aka 'The Magic Roundabout' is stupidly easy if folk follow the blooming rules.

      In addition; It's entirely legal to make your way rightwards around that junction due to the multiple mini roundabouts.

    The mini roundabouts near us are nearly all impossible to go around in a car. One that you can go around is so badly positioned that going around is such a ridiculous performance that it's rarely done, doing it properly slows traffic to a near stop and can cause confusion to the point of making it dangerous.

    I'm interested in the part about whether you are mandated to turn left if the road markings are arrows pointing left. The rest of his case and his arguments are for the courts to decide. But, of immediate relevance to all driving is whether you can ignore a left turn arrow (pointing to a stub road) in order to continue straight ahead with the intention of turning onto the major left turn junction?
    I'm thinking you may have a cyclist who is in the right lane (marked ahead only) and he'd suddenly find you cutting him up from his left, when he had every right to have expected you to have turned left!

    The worst roundabout I've ever seen is outside Hatton Cross Tube/Bus station. 4 mini roundabouts around 1 large roundabout. People simply don't know how to use them.
    You constantly get people going in both lanes then going right instead of the people in the left going left and the ones in the right going right. It's a complete nightmare, especially at peak times.
