- What’s happening at the nursery in January? Quite a bit, actually! Check out our current projects, watch a step-by-step guide on how to bare-root Sarracenia, and get an insider's view of what it’s really like to work at CalCarn! www.CaliforniaCarnivores.com
Really enjoyed this style video. Thanks for showing us around and the tutorials.
Great video! Damon, I hope you and your partner have (or had) a wonderful vacation. Looking forward to more videos as always. :)
Tom!!! Daniela and Damon finally got you in front of the camera!!! Well done with the Sarr division tutorial!!! 👏👏👏
And Damon, I know everyone appreciates you and your staff at Cal Carns. Right back atcha!!! Have a great time on your time off!!!
And Daniela, I loved the ending shot of the rain, the dormant Sarrs, and the tree frog croaks! ❤❤❤
Wasn’t Tom so good?! I’m so glad you loved this video!
@California_Carnivores tell Tom he smashed it!!! Next spring I’d love to see him talk about the cool observations he makes about Venus flytraps like the bumps in between “Kraken’s” cilia bases.
Really love these types of videos from you guys! Also Happy New year.
Thank you!
@@California_Carnivores Also Florida has been in the 70-60° but today it just randomly went into the 40°s
I wish southern California got this rain all were getting is this random fog! It would at least bring the temps down a bit for my plants! Awesome video thank you! can't wait for February! Hopefully we can see more updates and info on the winter growers!
We’re in a weird little belt in between super northern California and Southern California, where our weather is a bit more unpredictable than yours in these El Niño and La Niña years so we never fully know what we’re gonna get! We’re super grateful for the rain of course, but veryyyyy tired of it on a working-outside-tromping-through-puddles-everything-is-so-wet-level 😂😬
My outdoor tillandsia species love that fog. Last night 1/2nd it was pretty heavy in Culver City, orchids enjoy it too at least those not under screen, haemanthus as well. Fun not having to watch the water levels as much.
I thoroughly enjoyed your video-it was both highly informative and engaging, as always. Here in Michigan, where it gets quite cold, it's refreshing to see you in such pleasantly warm surroundings. I shared the link to your video with a pen pal in Australia who shares my passion for carnivorous plants. It’s also wonderful to get to know the staff at your nursery through your videos. By the way, I discovered a sundew in one of the plants I ordered from you some time ago-what a delightful surprise! 😀
I’m so glad! Damon and I (Daniela) talked about it and we just really want to bring everyone into the nursery more, and to let you all get to know the crew (at least the ones who want to be on camera) because we used to have so much fun with all the customers who visited the nursery! Thank you for sharing the video!
Excellent series
Thank you!
Thanks, this was a fun tour!
Great video! Thanks!
Happy New year kelvin in England i love my flytraps
Please try to get some intermedia Cuba seed or the other tropical one! I just got into intermedia in the fall! I want some tropical versions! I like these seasonal checks ins! Been growing CPs for about 21 years now!
Happy New Year 🎊🎉🥳
I'm sad my comment was eaten! (You don't have to tell me why; I'm sensitive. rofl) But to help the algorithm, I'll come back and say thank you for the video! I always love to learn what's going on in your greenhouse, and excited to see the progress! (And Tom was so great!)
Thank you! I’m not sure what happened with your comment! (I almost never remove or restrict comments, even the mean ones 😂 because I feel like everyone’s entitled to their opinions! So it takes a lot for me to ever kick one out! I wonder if something happened on RUclips’s end?!) I’m so glad you liked Tom and the video! I’m hoping to have Tom do more videos this year, he’s so wonderful! ❤️🌱
Regarding Tom’s piece, cutting off even the phylodia is very much why we cut Nepenthes leaves in half when doing vine cuttings. And for the same reasons!
I love the sounds of the frog. I have a noise generator that is frogs.
Isn’t it the best?! They love the rain so they’re very vocal, it makes being out working in it a little bit nicer!
I love your channel SO MUCH and I've ordered multiple times from your website and love all of it. I look forward to all of your posts and this one was no different - loved the nursery update for January. Would ya'll ever consider using a microphone for when you record your videos? Sometimes the ambient noise of the greenhouse and just general tone of voice of whoever is on camera - it can be hard to hear ya'll at times.
Thank you so much!!!! I know the noise is totally annoying! We’ve used microphones in the past and they always break on us really fast. I suspect it’s the ambient humidity in the greenhouse? It used to destroy our telephone too! I agree that we need one though, we’ve been doing more content and for these longer videos a mic would be way better! So I’ll be ordering another one for sure. I think we may always do a mix of impromptu videos without mics and planned out videos with mics
just adding a sprinkle of pepper 19:27
😂
Congrats on your move ,To Celebrate I just Bought a Saurus x Saurus from you !!!! A quick temp fix for your plywood floater is to stake it down maybe tent yellow one or a couple of 7" spikes at an angle ? Also Do you have a group California carnivores group Pic in front of the shop Autograph for sale ? Maybe a NEW sales Niche ?
Thank you!!! We have a few camera shy crew members so it’s always hard to get them to be in a group shot! But I love the idea!
I just ordered two species of sundews from you guys. I hope you send me some beautiful ones that are healthy with plenty of growth😊
Don't know how, but I totally missed the news of Peter's passing. At a loss of words at the moment.
It was such a big loss, he didn’t want anyone to know he was sick so the news was very shocking for most people. It’s been a really tough two years for us as we cared for him and we still talk about him constantly. He was just an incredibly special person ❤️
I've been working on getting a setup for darlingtonia. I know the roots need to be cold, so I got a plastic cooler with a removable lid, cut a big hole in the top, and placed a large pot of sphagnum moss in it. Im not sure if the greenhouse effect would heat up the pot or if the lid would keep the cool in. What do yall think?
Also I would put ice packs in the space between the pot and the inner wall of the ice chest.
We grow ours in old styrofoam containers with a few carefully placed drainage holes for the rain. They work really well! It should keep your plants really cool. And you can put ice in the water if it’s really hot or grow them in a spot slightly sheltered from the full afternoon sun!
I thought I had a few. lol Did this all start as a hobby from one plant like with most of us.
Our founder, Peter D’Amato started the nursery over 30 years ago and has always had a love of carnivorous plants! He really helped start the hobby in the US!
What if I live in northern Minnesota? When should I repot then?
End of winter, when the plants are sound asleep. That´ll give them the least stress
Hi neighbor! I’m in SE MN
When your night time lows are above 30F consistently, you can pot up your plants and put them outside. We try to time our plant work for 4-6 weeks before we know spring will be hitting, that means the plants are still dormant so they won’t be shocked but will take a lot of momentum into spring. Our lows are about 30F right now so it’s safe to put freshly potted things outside!
@Thanks!
I want to grow a ping indoors that is small, easy to care for and has a pretty flower what are some good recommendations?
Most pings stay fairly compact, about 2-3” across so you have a lot to choose from! Our most popular, easy to grow and beautiful one is Lilac Lollipop. And if you want one with a great pink flower, try Antares or Fiorello!
@@California_Carnivores I was thinking about getting emarginata or laueana because I like their flowers, are they easy too?
@ very easy! Emarginata likes to stay well watered all year and laueana will have a winter succulent period in where it likes to dry out so that’s the care difference!
Do you have any decent sized Drosera dichotoma 'Giant for sale? And do you have any with leaves?
They’re all died back for winter right now
If Tom ever decided on a different profession, he could probably do well being a narrator.
Right?! He’s got such a good voice!
