On note of people not showing appreciation, I'm guilty of that as well. So I'm reversing it now. Mr Malcolm your book outliers change my attitude about mastery, coupled that with mastery by Robert Greene well let's just say my successes in business are attributed to you guys, so THANK YOU SO MUCH. As for you Ryan, I don't even know where to begin, obstacles is the way, ego is the enemy, stillness is the key, daily stoic etc. It's not an exaggeration to say I've memorized every single chapter and lines in your books because of how often I listen, read, review, analyze and apply those wisdom, coupled that with Mr William Irvine's a guide to the good life, my entire philosophy of life is attributed to you guys and for that I'M ETERNALLY GRATEFUL!

Wow - such a great episode! I do think that the "thinking time" and when you are "sharpest during the day" varies from person to person. Or even the locations, etc. Gladwell can write in coffee shops, while Ryan needs his space to be clear. It underlined for me not necessarily that these are rules and best possible configurations are very personal, and each one of us needs to home in and identify when we feel sharpest and most focused and really leverage this to our advantage. Love all the insight provided in this channel and in this interview. Thanks again.

Incredibly ironic. One of my college professors gave me the book Outliers at the end of the semester one year. We had a class at an arboretum and have students the choice to do tree identification or run this loop. Well I really admired this professor and wasn’t the brightest pupil when it came to coding (the class was systems design/development) but I admired my professor because he taught us how to think rather than just the material. So I trained for this day so I could impress him. Leading up to the day he kept saying how his daughter held the record time for running the loop. I’ll never forget his reaction when I crossed the finish line and he looked at the stop watch. He had to do a double take and said “wow that was uh, actually pretty fast…” I think he was disappointed that I had surpassed his daughter lol

    • @Micoolaw

@@conversationcorner1837 I would say that it has made me more open-minded and willing to find other ways to accomplish things. Like there isn't necessarily one best way to do anything. It's also given me insight into how and why people become successful. It wasn't the best book but I did find some value in it

    • @Browny84

I would also like an answer to this one. The closest I can think of are The Creative Habit by Twyla Tharp and The Artists Way by Julia Cameron, neither really address storytelling specifically though and focus more on general creativity. Steven Pressfield is another author along such lines, but also doesn’t fit the question so perfectly.

I’d recommend the podcast You Are a Storyteller by Jesse Bryan and Brian McDonald! It’s not only about storytelling but also about the function of stories in society and in the lense of how it applies to all areas of life, as well goes into more technical parts in structures and the art of it. Bryan McDonald has also written the book “Invisible Ink” which is about writing stories too!

I think it’ll make your content shine a bit more and we’d get to see your stoic mantras in play against people who disagree with you to just about the same passionate values that you stand on. Otherwise it just feels like an echo chamber. A very dangerous place to be.

By now we all know somone who either has regret or is managing a bad side effect or worse. To flatly advocate such a complex, nuanced medical intervention is exceedingly shortsighted.
