The single twin scroll turbo of the final couple years of 135i, is much more reliable and just as good, if you aren't obsessed with tuning to over 400hp.
N55 will handle good power. It’s not the turbo change that makes people worried, but the change from a forged to cast crank. I doubt that will be an issue below 500. At those power levels though, you really need to consider the M3 diff core swap and some suspension. The m-sport brakes and wheels are already pretty big. Charge pipe and down pipe are a must, and probably a bigger intercooler especially in California. Parts for the E8X chassis are pretty damn cheap though.
@@Alex-ub7tk Exactly, 400 hp and a boatload of torque is a heck of a lot, really as much as you could ever want in small road car. Too small to fit anything in any of the openings other than a driver and passenger. But it drove great, sounded great, felt great and I feel like a stock 128i avoids the d-bag BMW driver stigma too and is ever so understated. Great vid!
I love that this model - my model - is getting more attention. A fun little platform and far more engine than such a short wheelbase ever needs, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

In Europe we got the coupe 1 series but also the hatchback. The top engine on the hatch - model designation 130i - is the good old n52 - same as the 128i but with like 60 more horses - an NA 3.0 i6 which is fun, but not quite as powerful as the n54/55 are. Still a very fun and practical car, and reliable too. I have one, would recommend. Also somehow the hatchback is lighter than the coupe, according to Wikipedia
It was a shame we didn't get the hatch, but the older hatchback we did get had a cheap reputation and was sold at a time nobody here was buying hatches. It was also no kind of performance car, alas. Now you could sell something like the 1-Series hatchback, but we only get dull BMW hatches, not sporty ones.
I had a 335i and driven many 135i's but now have a Z4 3.5i and must say it's damn near the perfect car for there.... Had LeMans blue M Sport 128i manual few years ago. While it didn't have turbo, the N52 inline 6 engine was silky smooth reving to 7k rpm and more than enough for dauly driver being lighter and better balanced. Put BMW performance exhaust to experience the inline 6 bliss and had separate winter wheel/tire setup for the winter season in Chicago. No jokes. No frills. As succinct as the car is itself. A good morning video to have with a good breakfast that you eat quickly because you have somewhere to be but you still want to enjoy yourself.
These roads are one of my favorite things about living here. I’ll admit that I’m spoiled to the point that if I had to live somewhere else, I don’t think I’d be as interested in owning a fun car.
I dont see too many of these 1 series cars where I live, but when I visited my family in Mexico, I rode in one of my cousin's BMW 120i hatchback. It was a fast one, and fun too.
I went out to LA this April to see my friend and I had a day to myself, so I rented a C7 Grand Sport on Turo and blasted up the canyons. And as a Pennsylvanian myself, I felt the same way. The LA canyons felt so alien but so serene. And for a day I was jealous.
Yes, there is so much beautiful scenery right outside LA - and most Angelenos never see it. As a kid we went camping in those mountains three or four times a year (in an overloaded Ford Country Sedan), and we all had an absolutely wonderful time. Now I'm in the Bay Area also surrounded by amazingly beautiful scenery, but people up here appreciate their surroundings more and go out and enjoy it. Oh, and the roads are great, too, if not as dramatic as the mountain roads around LA. More hills than mountains up here.
So, Matt Farrah has a link to a giveaway on his youtube channel for a 135i as well. Is this the same car? Two sweepstakes for one car? One is whynotyougear, and the other is getenteredtowin. Or are there two cars?
Long time fan of this channel, but my first comment. I love the BMW 1 series, and am glad to see you carving up the Santa Monica Mountains! I used to drive the road up to that lookout all the time! Thank you for the video!
The flat torque curve (torque peak at very low rpm all the way up to middle high rpm) is a more common feature on modern turbo motors. It's not a joke, just that the torque number is essentially just static from those rpm ranges. It's perfect for a daily driver, you've got all your torque at any RPM you'll regularly drive at.
Looks like the perfect car to carve up the sea to sky highway up here in Vancouver Canada. Mr Regular when are you doing a Canadian road trip to BUST on your friends to the north?
Man, I had fun on the 99 in my Caravan. You can enjoy the drive in almost any vehicle, the scenery is so beautiful. I won't lie, hearing the 3.3 whine away at 4000 isn't the best soundtrack, but when you're on the job with a place to be in an hour, you've got reasons.
It was about a year ago ya did a video about these cars and it was the same day I picked up my own 125i, almost to the day. There is something special about these cars and yes though mine has no turbo... it doesn't matter, they handle so well that you can't help but smile. They are a pain in the ass to keep on the road (1 year of ownership taught me that) but its well worth it.
Perfect place to carve a canyon that I've done in my 392 6MT Challenger. Look up California State Route 130 from San Jose to where I-5 goes north/south through the central valley. It's effectively a paved-over goat path that runs from East San Jose up to Mount Hamilton and the Lick Observatory. The other side it flies through the floating hills of the Diablo Range and settles out into the valley where it joins the Minimum Speed 85 Interstate 5.
Is anyone else getting sick of these RCR give aways? Like in the beginning I was happy for them, and I still am, but it seems every other week it's a give away. So they're pushing these "non regular" car so the give away is successful.
Hi ! I enjoy your video reviews every week. Just wondering why you are going again to Australia ? I would think that Europe (any where) would have a way more interesting offer of regular cars to review.
Ughhh ...pain .... I live in LA and am up In the North Bay for work. Mr. Regular if you ever have a chance RT1 and the canyon roads in Wine country are absolutely amazing. I'm here in my Fiesta ST absolutely loving life right now.
At some point I need to drive my car up a mountain pass like that. It would probably be quite pleasant. I've got a 2013 Ford Fusion ecoboost with AWD and a mod chip to trick my ECU into thinking that it's underboosting so it'll keep the wastegate and dump valves closed more and give me extra boost to the tune of over 300HP, at least according to the company. I'm not rich enough to bother taking it to an AWD dyno to actually test it, though. It's about as close to a BMW sedan as Ford is likely to make. It handles well, but doesn't tend to inspire reckless overconfidence, and the AWD doesn't really understeer as much as it allows you to just turn the wheel a bit more and literally pull yourself through a corner. Basically, it feels like it'll handle well, then it actually handles better than it feels like it should. Which is always my preference. I got it because when I went to test drive the car, in the pouring rain, I still couldn't force it to lose traction even when I slammed the accelerator when turning from a stop, which sometimes gave me trouble in my previous Mercedes. I've come to really, really like having the deep assurance of a competent AWD system to save me from driving-related anxiety, particularly regarding inclement weather.
My man Jeffrey Epstein from Black BIgalow and UTGs and Steve magnantes channels? Extremely small world. I did not know they made a diesel chevette. Did it have some sort of Isuzu diesel or what?
@@evanc6110 I'm all over!!! Yes it had an Isuzu engine and 4 speed transmission. Very reliable drive train. Some models had a 5 speed but I never drove one. The chevy luv trucks came with the same engine option as well. As long as you didn't let the timing belt break the car never stopped.
It'll be funny when the giveaway car is finally just a corolla. A basic corolla. Why? Because "I've told you a thousand times to just get one so fine, just take it."
I'm confused. I could've sworn this was being given away elsewhere. I saw this same car being given away from Elliot Alvis' channel. I'm confused did he make two?
I know no one else is asking for it, but can you make another DeLorean video? I drunk emailed you once about them, and I'm now drunk again. I can't escape yet I am longing for a validation of my obsession. Yours truly,
As someone who lives here I think you're just overrating the novelty of taking a "canyon car" somewhere out of the way. A very nice handling car with enough power is a nice experience on these roads, until you run into traffic, which is 80-90% of the time in the middle of a weekend day. Then the drive is no different than a Camry, except you're paying and worrying more, and you're mad you can't enjoy your fun car.

I've come to really, really like having the deep assurance of a competent AWD system to save me from driving-related anxiety, particularly regarding inclement weather.
these have always sat high on my list of Cars-that-are-almost-motorcycles
Your content just keeps getting better love the vids man
I thought you two had this mash-up!
I miss Roman's opening and closing songs tbh 😪
This is Matt Farrah's canyon carving 1 Series.
Wish I’d entered on your site for the mug! Looks nice and would be great for camping trips too!
Australia in 2024? I better get my 1977 Holden Kingswood and 1999 Ford Falcon AU ready to go.
You should do a video on a diesel chevette. Had one years ago and it was definitely a crazy car. The slowest car I've ever driven!!!
My man Jeffrey Epstein from Black BIgalow and UTGs and Steve magnantes channels? Extremely small world. I did not know they made a diesel chevette. Did it have some sort of Isuzu diesel or what?

I'm all over!!! Yes it had an Isuzu engine and 4 speed transmission. Very reliable drive train. Some models had a 5 speed but I never drove one. The chevy luv trucks came with the same engine option as well. As long as you didn't let the timing belt break the car never stopped.
Thank you for saying "BY" accident and not "ON" accident
There's gotta be some people out there with 1 of every mug..... now I'm starting to see the brilliance of my silly "drive a real car" collection.
Entered. It's a BMW that might quell my Miata needs...for now.
I’ve been waiting since 2010 for you to do a 128i review but I’ll take it. You could review my 2008 128i in LA if you want but it needs work
Matt Farah and Mr. Regular is like Karl Kassarda and Ian McCollum. One has the skill, the other has the insight and ability to wax philosophical.
I see you flexin your watch game in front of the wristcheck car bro 😎
Wow!!!! Well done on awesome transformation!! Ypu are making this channel interesting even more!!!!!
I seriously love listening to you
What would be the best headgear when driving this beauty?
PA inspection stickers. NJ plate. In CA. Confused....
Ahhhh stop giving me an opportunity to win the car of my dreams that I can't afford the tax with.
Huh I figured Matt would keep this
It'll be funny when the giveaway car is finally just a corolla. A basic corolla. Why? Because "I've told you a thousand times to just get one so fine, just take it."
I really really really really wanna see a RCR review on a Porsche 914!!!!!!!
This BMW seems like it would be perfect to carve the canyons of AZ.
Every time I spot an Easter egg I chuckle at your Chicago in November joke. Where were you in June of 2013?
I'm the reason you're going to have 4 Pontiac Firebird reviews and its 2 2000s gens and 2 1980s gens.
My dream car.
@telegrammeregularcars01EVERYONE MASS REPORT THIS SCAMMER!!!!!!!
This feels like a well thought out infomercial for a single BMW. That’s all they have to sell, just one but they still made the infomercial. 😀
If you want to come drive a 2015 Lexus RCF I live in Irvine 👀 hope your having fun in SoCal
If you're off to Australia, you gotta do Tasmania.
Thanks for reminding me of 3rd rock from the Sun.
Every shrub in this video looks like it's waiting for an excuse to spontaneously combust.
Is that Matt Farah's million mile bmw?
A WILD TONY AIRLINES APPEARS 💜
Another video - lets go 😎❤🙌
I'm confused. I could've sworn this was being given away elsewhere. I saw this same car being given away from Elliot Alvis' channel. I'm confused did he make two?
So I was right, there is brown involved…or there will be for the passenger with who ever wins it
first of these giveaways that I actually want
It's cute and I always wanted a BMW. I'll buy a mug.
So much power in such a small car. Whoo boy someone's going to get in a lot of trouble in that thing.
A *LOT* of trouble.
Is this Matt Farahs million mile Lexus?
When are you going to upgrade your cameras?
After watching Will on Ricer Miata I don't want one of these anymore.
Is this Matt Farah's Million Mile Lexus?
Still kicking myself for not entering to win the WS6 Trans Am.
