Farming/agriculture is the way to go in Africa. We have fertile lands and can feed ourselves....I don't understand why people think farming is for poor people🤦🏽‍♀️. We need to change this mentality as Africans. My uncle has a farm and grows his own vegetables and maize, he never has to buy cornmeal which we use to make nshima.

I don't understand this mindset either, it really makes me angry and worried because it is so regressive. I love gardeining, but in the UK you've only got a short window with which to grow, in Africa it is summer all year round. I also want to develop my own variety of pepper by cross breeding, that would take YEARS in the UK, in Africa I could test many new generations in one year!

Growing up in Ethiopia in the fifties and sixties surrounded by a lot of farming, I wanted to be a farmer. Then when I noticed how our traditional farming method required a long hard day, I switched to be an engineer here in the U.S., in the midst of the most fertile mechanized farm region in the central valley of California. My first love being a farmer had never left me and when I see our African young people going back to our origin using mechanized and modern farming methods, it makes me grateful that I lived long to see this dream of mine come true. Keep it up and enjoy the ride as well as the destination.

Well thought out. Quite strategic. Kisumu city and its vast International Airport being in the neighborhood means you potentially have a substantial domestic and international market for your produce. Western Kenya has great agricultural soil. It's time natives quit cane growing for fruit/vegetable production. This is truly inspirational, especially for the energetic youth who have been shying away from farming as a source of income.

Congratulations. You have made the start and you won't regret it. No matter ones education/profession, farming is the way forward. You seems to have selected a proper farm land. Not like some places where the lands with the most rocks and have no water are sold as farm land, while the most irrigated and flat land go into housing. And you also started out while you are youthful. I am proud of the African countries that see farming as important and also engaging the youth. In the diaspora most youth see farming as outdated, and don't mind buying imported food.

My queen, starting a farm is the best idea you could have done, farming is a billion-dollar business, and the biggest billionaires on this planet are in agriculture, I am currently preparing to start a small sandwich restaurant to make money to buy land to start my own farm, my intention is to export my product to the Caribbean, which is where I am from, apart from avocados I suggest you try to do oranges too, oranges like avocados are supper foods and with the shortage of oranges in the west, orange juice making factories are struggling to find good quality oranges, and because of that oranges are in really high demand right now! Navel Oranges are apparently the most popular oranges that are being cultivated in California, which you know cultivates most of the oranges coming out of America, that's why it's called the sunshine state, parts from them having sun all year round, they also got the nickname because of all the oranges farms in the area, 50% of all oranges cultivated in California are navel oranges, the other 14% is the Valencia oranges, Don't sleep on this, take advantage of the land you have and make money, my queen.

Doing farming with a river nearby is smart because avocado is one of the fruits that uses a a lot of water and can literally dry an area in a short while. But my advice don't dig or cultivate too close to the river bank for your safety others and for land conservation, instead you can plant trees around the river bank for conservation purposes. If l may ask, where is this place and what is the name of the river?

Nice one AT..Nowadays Agriculture/investing in farming is the way to go more-so the future for young, agile youths of Africa..I pray you become succesful more-so expand into different areas of it in the nearest future!..God bless ur hustle!..when it comes to farming..never give up, stay focused and persevere..i tell you this out of my memorable, unforgettable past experiences i had coz i have been there as well running some aspects of it specifically as regards dealing in commercial fish farming a huge one at that with about 25 very large concerete reservoirs/ponds with each containing six thousand fingerlings approximately aside, from the sixty thousand fingerlings we produce each year in conjunction for several years at some point and it was really, hugely succesfull later on..not so much when we first started..infact we started making back our profits after 6 years due to a lot of factors i.e. unfavourable seasonal climate conditions, fragile dna prone unhealthy fingerlings that just refuses to grow as expected despite adequate feeding until we started producing ours of quality, some grumpy customers especially are mostly at the forefront of that too lool..after labouring for six months coz that's the average life cycle of the fishes again specifically catfishes in transforming from fingerlings to maturity to when you are ready to sell them whilst gaining enough weights when put on a scale in other to avoid your customers making a mockery out of the whole thing with all the stress and pains you might have gone through or incure in taking care of them for those specific aforementioned months or less as the case may be sometimes like even within 5 months so it depends on the quality of feeding and welfare overall..From my experience, i observed some if not most of the customers were very stingy and largely inconsiderate to the extent that they will even price the hell out of it/short change you as if you created the farm for them to just pick whatever and as well leave free of charge..though it was largely owned by my Dad..so back then we were two initially then became three later on managing it including myself, along with the other two professionals he hired while i had few of mine too lol within the space at the back of our house also for consumption purposes mostly..Moreover, where some of the teething problems will be for any one that is just starting the business of fish farming largely will be in the area of cost of feeding the fishes i.e. essentially buying all those specially made costly fish food full bags of copens, buying their powder format drugs that is mixed with flour/local floating feed and some other condiments e.tc..but the good news however, is that catfish especially tend to eat a lot of several home made foods you give to them like Eba, Bread, Intestines, Maggots e.tc...basically solid/light foods lol..so you can cut down feeding costs when they reach the three month half of maturity stage or even at two months..at this point don't let me bore you any further..so looking forward myself to investing in the poultry and as well piggery side of things very soon..do take care and stay blessed!..Much love.xxxxxxx

This is an interesting documentary. Would you be comfortable providing a profile of your farm for your viewers e.g. where is the farm, what was your experience in purchasing the farm, what informed your choice of avocado as your first venture, what challenges have you met along the way, what are your cost-benefit projections.

It would be nice but any business person would not share their total business plan. What is interesting is that too many of us Africans set up businesses with no real clue of all the costs involved and projected revenues and many get burned. Another observation is people only looking at the buying and selling price of a product and not capturing or accounting for all the intermediate costs involved. That said, i have heard Kenya is the 6th highest avocado exporter in the world with Mexico and other South American countries at the top. Avocados are a superfood and in ever increasing demand in the Western world so if managed well she should be successful. Best wishes to her.

Farming is the future - Africa as a whole continent has the land, soil and climate to produce every type of crop needed. Millet will be the next big crop in 5 years. Avocados are always popular, but please grow your own and not the "Hass" version that we have in the US. Btw and avocado cost me $2.50 usd per avocado, they are expensive here. And please, please, please, stop selling your land to China or Chinese companies. Lease the land so you can always make income.
