There's a few ways you can get paid, it all depends on the contract & client. I prefer getting an upfront fee + royalties, but have found just royalties to be very common.

great question! of course it varies, but I'd say most of the people we've talked to are doing it as just one of their revenue streams, and generating on average 20k. It can be a great source of "passive" income, or if you pour more energy and time into it - you can grow that number to be a full-time income stream. It definitely adds up!

Do you get upfront money for licensing or only royalties later once contract begins?

This is different from print on demand. With print on demand you're not transferring any rights, just using a service to create the product.
