Are there any American cryptics? I want to get into these but I feel like a lot of the word play is dependent on being familiar with British English and UK culture.

The Guardian has some, I'm assuming that they don't involve British terms

Unfortunately The Guardian still involves British terminology.

The New York Times publishes a cryptic every 8 weeks, which you can find in the Variety section of the archive. (But you do have to subscribe to the crosswords.)

@@danielleanderson6371 Wow, forgot it was a british publication. Nevermind

Actually, it is possible for US solvers to pick up enough UK culture to solve these puzzles - it just takes a while. Cricket, public schools, slang, obscure towns and rivers will eventually become familiar.

As Oscare Wilde from Britain once said:
"“We have really everything in common with America nowadays, except, of course, language.”
As you were going through the first few clues, I realized this quote is far more correct than I initially realized. I have a ton to learn about british slang and culture if I'm ever going to come anywhere near these.

Do they make any cryptics for 3 year olds with brain damage? I kinda want to give one a shot

the guardian’s “quiptic” is a slightly easier cryptic - it will still be quite a challenge if you are new to cryptics but hopefully you’ll get at least a few answers in!

I don't watch the videos until I've solved the puzzle, so it is interesting to watch your thought process. Like you, I often see the answer just after I give up and go on to the next clue. Apparently, the brain can keep working on something even after you stop consciously thinking about it.

Thank you for this video! Now I understand what you mean when you say "definition" in every single cryptic crossword video! I still feel like my English vocabulary isn't sufficient to master these cryptic crosswords but I'm delighted I understand the basics now!

Love these puzzles, and the slower paced ones to give us a chance to keep up with you, definitely getting much better because of these (and learning heaps of new words)

I really enjoy watching these, even if unlike the sudokus I have no chance of solving them on my own. This is mainly due to a lack of word knowledge which I don't really care to put the effort in to improve but still a fascinating watch.

Can anyone recommend a good website or app (that is free) for such puzzles

    • @andymc391

The Independent, Guardian, and FT cryptic crosswords are all free online. The Independent is at puzzles.independent.co.uk/games/cryptic-crossword-independent/#!201906 - they go back many years, and you just have to watch an advert. Sunday and Monday puzzles are the easier end puzzles, (Thursday and Saturday are usually difficult). You can get explanations for all the answers to these at www.fifteensquared.net

Impossible for an American, even with good British slang knowledge. I can get a few... And maybe even a few are easier for me. Ford Capri? Never heard of it, but I know Capri is an island, and I know you folks use let for rented.

I did learn from this video. However I don't like these puzzles.
Although I understand that it's the name of the channel.
It's something I wish to not see anymore on the channel.
Still thank you for the video
