The established practice of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions is, to place the right hand over the left as it is proven from various narrations of the Holy Prophet ﷺ.This is the view of the vast majority of Scholars.
Placing both hands at the sides while in Qiyaam is termed “Ir-saal or Sadl”. This is said to be the view of Imam Malik as recorded by Ibn Qaasim, the most prominent student of Imam Malik, in his Al-Mudawana, which is a compendium of the legal opinions of Imam Malik.
Maliki scholars claim that, placing the hands at the sides was the habit and practice of the people of Madina, the blessed city of the Holy Prophet ﷺ, hence the reason Imam Malik preferred this practice. From among the principles that Imam Malik adheres to is, whenever an “apparent” contraction exist between a narration attributed to the Holy Prophet and the practice of the people of Madina, he gives preference to the practice of the people of the city of The Holy Prophet ﷺ as he considers it adequate proof.
The Maliki Scholars do not dispute that folding hands is acceptable, but they believe that placing the hands at the sides is the stronger opinion.
Abu al-Waleed al-Baaji, a prominent Maliki Scholar explained why Imam Malik may have preferred placing the hands at the sides; This is because of the fear that people may think it is an obligatory action in Salah. Other Maliki scholars mentioned that the reason why Imam Malik’s preferred Irsaal is because the holding of the hands encourages one to lean on his hands thus supporting himself in Salah.
Other prominent Maliki Scholars like Ibn Abdul Barr have stated that the correct position of Imam Malik on this issue is to place the right hand over the left hand and not that of Ir-saal. This is because of the many narrations supporting the holding of the hands and moreover, Imam Malik himself has recorded in his compilation of Hadith (Al-Muwatta) “The Chapter of holding the hands, one over the other, in Salaah”.
In conclusion both views i.e. holding and placing of the hands at the side are acceptable in the Maliki Madhab. Whereas most of the other Imams and Scholars state that the folding the hands is the established Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Nevertheless all agree that, whether the hands are placed one on top the other or at the sides, it does not affect the validity of the Salaah, since it is not from the compulsory nor Wajib actions of Salaah.

What to do with all of the other hadith about folding?
How many ahadiths are there that the prophet prayed with hands down?
    Wa'il bin Hujr said:
"I said: 'I am going to watch how the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prays.' So I watched him and he stood and said the takbir, and raised his hands until they were in the level with his ears, then he placed his right hand over his left hand, wrist and lower forearm. When he wanted to bow he raised his hands likewise. Then he prostrated and placed his hands in level with his ears. Then he sat up and placed his left leg under him; he put his left hand on his left thigh and knee, and he put the edge of his right elbow on his right thigh, then he held two of his fingers together and made a circle, and raised his forefinger, and I saw him moving it and supplicating with it." (Sunan An-Nisaai)
It was narrated that Al Hajjaj bin Abi Zainab said:
X"I heard Abu Uthman narrate that Ibn Mas'ud said: 'The Prophet (ﷺ) saw me when I had placed my left hand on my right in prayer. He took hold of my right hand and placed it on my left.'" (Sunan An-Nisaai) [hasan]
    Narrated Wa'il ibn Hujr:
I said that I should look at the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) how he prays. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) stood up and faced the qiblah (i.e. the direction of Ka'bah) and uttered the takbir (Allah is most great); then he raised his hands till he brought them in front of his ears; then he caught hold of his left hand with his right hand (i.e. folded his hands).
When he was about to bow, he raised them (his hands) in a like manner. Then he sat, stretched out his left foot (to sit on it), placed his left hand on his left thigh, and kept away the tip of his right elbow from his right thigh, joined two fingers, formed a ring, to do so. And the narrator Bishr made a ring with the thumb and the middle finger. (Abu Dawud)
    Wa'il b. Hujr reported:
He saw the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) raising his hands at the time of beginning the prayer and reciting takbir, and according to Hammam (the narrator), the hands were lifted opposite to ears. He (the Holy Prophet) then wrapped his hands in his cloth and placed his right hand over his left hand. And when he was about to bow down, he brought out his hands from the cloth, and then lifted them, and then recited takbir and bowed down, and when (he came back to the erect position) he recited:" Allah listened to him who praised Him." And when he prostrated, he prostrated between his two palms. (Muslim)
    Narrated Tawus:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to place his right hand on his left hand, then he folded them strictly on his chest in prayer. (Abu Dawud)
Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “We Prophets have been commanded to delay our suhoor and to break our fast straight away, and to place our right hands over our left hands when praying.” (narrated by Ibn Hibbaan in al-Saheeh, 3/13-14).
Sahl ibn Sa’d said: the people used to be instructed to place the right hand over the left forearm when praying. (narrated by al-Bukhaari, no. 740)
Musnad Ahmed, No. 21967 from Kabeesah ibn Hulb, from his father, who said: “I saw the Messenger of Allah, sallallaahu`alayhi wa sallam, turn (to leave) from his right and from his left. And he added, “he would place this on his chest.”
Ibn Qudaamah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:
As for placing the right hand on the left during prayer, it is one of the sunnahs of prayer according to the majority of scholars. That was narrated from ‘Ali, Abu Hurayrah, al-Nakha’i, Abu Majlaz, Sa’eed ibn Jubayr, al-Thawri, al-Shaafa’i and ashaab al-ra’i. It was also narrated by Ibn al-Mundhir from Maalik. End quote.

@NK-vd8xi sooo??? You reject a hadith because its not mutawaatir? The vast majority of hadith are not mutawaatir

@@AbuFadl the practices of Madinah of that generation are mutawatir, so they take precedence over hadith that are not mutawatir.
Think about it probabilistically for this issue. Imam Malik learnt from and lived with people who directly did so from Rasūlullah, the people of Medinah did not fold their hands.
Is it more likely that thousands of people who learnt directly from the sahaba in the prophets city were wrong, or that the ahad hadiths are missing something and lack context or are just wrong?
(Interesting fact: The Shias and Ibadis, ideological enemies of each other, both pray with their hands unfolded, the fact they don't differ on this suggests that the Sunnis who fold their hands are the odd ones out)

We do qabd in Sunnah which is optional and must do in nufl Salah that's what we do with these Hadith alhummduillah

@hamzamedina146 why isnt there an authentic hadith clearly mentioning the hands to the side? Why do the majority of madhabs pray otherwise?

If you tell anyone to stand in front of an esteemed person the default is standing respectfully, with the hands folded😊😊

In the military, they fold their hands behind their backs, when 'standing at ease'.

جَزَاكَ ٱللَّٰهُ خَيْرًا. Due to the reason that I do not have the resources nor a community that follows Maliki fiqh, I follow the fiqh of the majority in my area (which is Hanafi fiqh). I went to the mosque and asked the Imam whether sadl is acceptable or not, with him replying that it won’t invalidate the prayer I.e. the prayers are excepted, but the prayer wouldn’t be prayed as to the majority opinion of the school which is qabd. Similar to Malikis who practise qabd, which also isn’t the majority view of their fiqh, but the salah being accepted anyways. So is it acceptable to follow Hanafi fiqh in its entirety only with the difference of practising sadl instead of qabd?

Do you even know usul al fiqh? We got 4 schools of thoight based on the salafs understanding their ijtihad. The prophet says ... and the salaf explains what that means based on local practice (ahlul madinah) or text.

i wish he had used this logic the other way round.
prophet s.a.w ordered to fold the hands and if someone gets tired by holding the hands then there is a ruksha to unfold the hands in long prayers like taraweeh as i myself feel folding the hands on my chest for a long time during taraweeh makes my arms pain a bit so i slide it down on my stomach then when it gets more heavy for me then i slide it more just above the navels and try not to slide more below the navels like the hanfis because i know the hadeeth which talks about folding the hands below the navel this part is daef.
so according to his logic one may unfold the hands altogether to give it some relief during long prayers as it is reported by some sahabis that they use to practice this as well.
The logic that one's hands get numb while standing for a long prayer while the hands are unfolded doesn't make sense to me .
    WallahooAalam.

Isnt it remakable that the Muslims and the madhabs differ on how to pray in simple actions- how to stand with hands, whether to recite behind the imam...

These differences are only with regards to certain specificities and there is a vast range of acceptable legitimate differences that teach Muslims how to be intellectually mature with how we deal with differences. It is a profoundly beautiful lesson of acceptance and love despite disagreements.
