In this video, I spent the day with a real life human Barbie doll and transformed into a Barbie too! What can I say… I’m a Barbie girl at heart.
When I was little, I was a huge fan of Barbie. I had the Barbie Dream House, the pink Jeep, and an extensive Barbie collection. I even used to force my little brothers to play Barbies with me (they secretly loved it.)
And even though I loved Barbies, I absolutely struggled with body image when I was younger and I do question if any of it had to do with the conditioning and programming I may have been receiving from looking at that doll for hours a day.
Barbie made her debut to the world on March 9, 1959 at the New York Toy Fair. Straight outta the womb with long, thin legs, a perfect hourglass figure, and that snatched seductive stare, Barbie was an instant hit. Since then, Barbie has become so much more than just a doll. She even ranks at #43 on the list of the 101 Most Influential People Who Never Lived. Barbie has become so popular, that even humans want to be her, going extreme lengths to achieve the Barbie look and lifestyle. And in this video, we spend the day with a real Barbie who has done exactly this.
Marcela Iglesias is a real life barbie doll, a “human doll” and she’s spent loads of money, time, and plastic to become just like Barbie. She even has two songs called “It’s Barbie B****” and “Human Doll.” Marcela was also part of a show & community called “The Plastics of Hollywood,” which was a group of people who wanted to turn themselves into human dolls through plastic surgery.
In this video we dive deep into the discussions of body image and plastic surgery, and we even get to meet Marcela’s friend Justin, “the human Ken doll.”
Since the 90s and early 2000s when I was playing with Barbie, she’s come a long way. In 1994, researchers in Finland made a startling announcement: Barbie, if she were a real woman, would lack enough body fat to get her period. This revelation sparked a wave of discussions and demands for change. Responding to the criticism, Mattel, the creators of Barbie, introduced new body types, embracing diversity and inclusivity. They aimed to ensure that every child could see themselves represented in the dolls they played with. Mattel has created all types of barbies in the last few decades, including Barbies of all skin types, sizes, even Barbies with disabilities and Drag Queen Barbie! In 2018, Mattel celebrated International Women's Day with the MoreRoleModels campaign, honoring extraordinary women like Frida Kahlo, Katherine Johnson, and Amelia Earhart.
Although I may not be on board with glamorizing plastic surgery, I definitely expanded my perspective through spending time with Marcela and Justin and ultimately I believe in body autonomy.

What do you think about Barbie? Is she problematic or empowering? What about plastic surgery? I am so curious to hear your thoughts!

Plastic surgery becomes problematic imo when you start to make it your identity.

When plastic surgery looks really natural, it's fine. Just like make up. Too much make up it looks gross. Same thing with plastic surgery.

I feel like, although there's still a long way to go, Barbie dolls and clothing models and such are slowly moving towards a healthier place. Like Marcela was saying, growing up in the 90's wasn't great for body image and mental health issues related to that. I hope that children growing up start to see that it's ok to be themselves, in their own bodies, and not have to strive to be this perfect ideal thing. I definitely also agree with your thoughts on body-autonomy, if you want to do something and it makes you happy and doesn't hurt someone else, then go for it, but do it for yourself not for someone else.

I think its not good that people have the desire to get plastic surgery. I feel like no one should feel the need to change their body but instead be happy with their natural one. But of course there is lots of pressure by society and stuff and if someone really doesnt like their natural body and is insecure about it I think its alright to get surgery.
So I guess I am not really against surgery but more against people even feeling the need to get it.

Marcela is so spot on with "it's about having fun with yourself" it's the magic of these forever young cultures in Los Angeles and Miami, somehow wish it were like that everywhere else in the world for people to stop being so judgmental of the ones who want to feel great and quirky in their own skin.
Yet health comes first, both physical and mental health, placing our bodies on the line it's not okay, here our true self-esteem comes really handy.

I remember as a little girl, hearing my dad belittle women so much I eventually started to despise anything girly. I distinctly remember getting a Barbie doll as a gift as a small child, and being so upset I got a *girly toy* that I pulled her head off and threw it in the toilet. I spent yeeeaaaars learning to love being a woman, healing from body dysmorphia my dad put on me, to the point where I deeply questioned who I was at a fundamental level for many years, and ended up with partners who treated me in the same way. I love that Marcela is in love with being female, and embodies it in a way that makes her feel like herself, what other people think be damned. I love seeing all the different ways women play with their aesthetic; there are endless forms of beauty, and there isn't any one perfect form of that beauty. We don't walk into the forest and decide which flower or tree is the most beautiful , we just take it all in

It’s interesting you as a young woman discussing procedures with a woman over 40. You (and me probably) have this idealistic view of how we should see ourselves. The older woman is actually living with the reality of her body changing due to age. You and me do pride ourselves on looking good - you used to make some pretty intense workout videos. I have a feeling when we age, we will relate to Marcele. I think we understand her rational for her procedures more than we would like to admit.

I've really enjoyed your style recently. Because as a geeky person I see the spiritual path as 'the hero's journey', and so view the last few videos as being about how others have realized they're the main character of their own narrative. Like embracing their fantasy or Higher Self as initiation into the 'new world', crossing the threshold, or death and rebirth. Stories, especially the ones we personally love, are merely a reflection of our reality, which we can shape to be in alignment... This is what I've received from your recent content. Keep creating for your Self, it's showing.

Marcela was definitely more interested in material consumption than she was letting on, her portrayal of herself in regards to materialism didn't feel genuine. I think there's a lot of deep things going on within her that influence her fantasy... probably things that have to do with her avoiding her natural self, avoiding aging, not seeing her natural body as beautiful, possibly even childhood trauma. This isn't a bad thing. She is still beautiful as a walking representation of her traumas, and I respect her and her unique journey. We're all just here trying to find our way back to God, and we're all at different levels of it.

It is so interesting to see the perspective of Marcela and Justin and to get to know the humans behind the "doll image". I normally associate that the reason why people do plastic surgery is that they are unhappy with their appearance (which is the case a lot of times because of the pressure of beauty standards that are always changing).
But seeing this pespective of it being more permanent art with the own body is really interesting. Also they seem like really nice people who are happy with where they are in life.
Also in case of Marcela I can just agree that creating the image of Barbie (not in relation to plastic surgery) is kind of like playing dress up. It is just fun to wear nice and extravagant clothes and do a more extra make-up.
When I was young I also never thought that my body should be like Barbies. It was just a style of doll for me. So for me personally it was never problematic.
But in combination with societies pressure to be thin and always look perfect it can be problematic for children to grow up, thinking they need to look like that. But that's not because of the doll itself but because what the beauty standards in our society are.
Also I think the general normalization of plastic surgery is a big problem. Because most people don't do it as art but because they feel pressured to look young and fitting into the beauty standards. So many people for example do botox because they are afraid of wrinkles and of looking old and not being validated for their appearance anymore.
And that is the big issue. That the normal human body and the aging effects are seen as ugly and undesirable.

So many times I see people judging people with plastic surgery and telling them they must hate themselves and the doctors should be in jail etc. I see plastic surgery like Sims or any character game where you can make your own characteristics to reflect what you like best. Of course anything extreme in life comes with risks but we all have choice and expression over our bodies and individual lives. I don’t see plastic surgery as trying to blend in, but yet trying to stand out by being your authentic self. It’s so cool to see people who may not relate or embrace the idea of body enhancements, but still accept and not judge the people who do. ❤❤ natural or plastic we are all uniquely human xoxoxo

Also, this video was empowering and to see a different side or their side as to why someone would want to be a "Barbie" or have muscles.. have fun and he was right, given a million dollars people will fill the void in their lives of what they love! Thanks Sky!

Thank you for this video. In all honesty, I initially didn’t want to watch it because I had some prejudices about where your channel is heading in regards to content, but clicked on it to check it out.
I think you did a great job of keeping it real and asking the right questions in such an open and non-judgmental way, and the way you went about this video in particular reminded me, just like you said, that it’s important to hear all kinds of opinions and perspectives and consume + interact with things we may not necessarily agree with.
There’s so much focus on finding your “niche” and ONE focus as a creator, and as a consumer the algorithm feeds you what you usually agree with or look at, that it’s so important and valuable to get a wide range of all sorts of content, opinions, lifestyle, etc.
So thank you! And I like that you are focusing on evolving ❤

I love and appreciate the way you approach your interviews, as well as the message you leave us with. It is great you are getting perspectives from people of all different lifestyles.
Even if the content isn’t your usual “spiritual” quest, I believe spirit is guiding you in the direction of understanding all people of different walks of life.
Remaining curious and spreading awareness, bridging the gap of misunderstandings, is a beautiful gift you bring to the world.
Side note: While I can definitely respect anyones desire to have the breast they did when they were younger and making surgical adjustments accordingly, I do think it is really valuable to honor the natural body as beautiful and not something to be “corrected” or “fixed” as though it is something wrong. It’s just a matter of the message we are sending with the wording we choose.
I appreciate you making that point too.
My mother had a face lift because she could not see her beauty due to the narrative that sagging skin is wrong and something to be fixed.
I wonder if she would have found self-acceptance if there had been a stronger narrative that supports and idolizes the natural aging process.

However when Ken showed up , my heart felt so sad for this human being. I don’t believe that anyone who loves themselves and life would ever do these many operations to himself. He looks sad deep inside and like all of this is made to cover up some sadness reaching as far as perhaps his childhood :(

I’ll never join anyone’s patreon”. Having joined my first patreon, yours, over a month ago, I’ll never look back. The behind the scenes and extras you give us access to are priceless, thank you.
I also want to thank you for acknowledging my issues on your previous video about my hearing loss and the inaccuracy of RUclipss auto generated captions. I’m not sure what you have done on this video, but between turning captions on, plus you actually adding important captions to the video, I was able to fully follow the entire video and enjoy it to the fullest. As someone who will eat the food even if the order comes out wrong, or thank the hairdresser for dying my hair the wrong colour, it felt awkward and weird to ask for your help with captions, but you received my request with a loving and open heart… you made me feel support, equal and enough. Thank you so very much.
I can’t wait to join the discord community. This video was so different to usual, but your open and honest questions and your ability to hold space for deep conversation made this video just as enlightening and thought provoking as the more spiritual and mindful related content. In short, you are amazing, my husband and kids love your videos too, and thank you from the bottom of my heart. With love from the UK.

This was actually the first time I saw a disconnect between you and your subject. I can tell this was a topic you were the least in alignment with, but it was interesting to see. You are my favorite youtuber and I am loving the characters you've been introducing us to with your current style. I love the aspect of Barbie that shares the message that you can be anything. I am someone who has never meshed with one specific way of being, even though some of who I am contradicts. It all makes sense to me and because I haven't allowed others to define me, I've been able to go down many different roads. I am a performer and got to portray Barbie at a few events, and she has been so fun. I love the positivity and bold, bubbly, stylish vibes she brings to little girls.

After all it is their choice and maybe it creates some insecurities for others but at the end of the day I support people being able to decide what they want to do with themselves so I need to support people who do this as well. I always loved Barbie! ❤ My wonderful mum used to sow clothes for my dolls. Ball gowns, suits u name it - they were amazing! So much love went into the making of those outfits. My favorite doll was one called Marina. I just thought she was such a beautiful, powerful woman🤩 She went with me everywhere… Then when I grew up and left home my stepmom sold my dolls without my permission. It of course made me furious! Years later I found that exact Marina Barbie doll on an auction site and now she sits in my living room: Order is restored😊
I believe Barbie becomes what you make of her. To me she’s always been more like a superhero than anything else❤
