So sad that he is gone. My favorite character (and favorite actor) in one of the best shows ever to grace HBO. Nice to see someone else remembering him, and so appropriately and poetically.
What a tragic end for Brutus and Cassius. I mean we all knew this was only ever going to end one way, but when the end finally came it was still very sad. The music was a perfect fit.
Ultimately, the sole winner was Octavian. And, like everyone else in classic times, he was too disturbed to recognize the human cost of his accomplishment.
"they got what they diserved, killing someone isnt right for any reason" Generally speaking, that thought is correct, but I don't agree with the ANY part. There are definitely situations where killing someone is justified or even the right thing to do.
Before Democracy was prevalent in Athens - the attitude was that blood must be cleansed with more blood in order to satisfy justice, that was the way the ancient pre-Democratic Athenians proceeded. Just look at any classical Greek tragedy. The Romans held this very value to the core, as did many civilizations in the ancient world, and to a large extent this attitude is still a question we grapple with today because of those prior attitudes. The Athenians had there brief century or so of Democratic rule, but the ideal of trying to replace the notion that violence must be met with another violent act specifically to satisfy justice (which was a different concept to modern "Justice" which is too obscure to explain right here in this post - much has been written about this) lasted throughout Democratic Athens - because legality came into play basically so you could be held accountable for your actions if you killed another man and face trial rather than just leaving it to retribution to settle the matter between the two parties. There were no police in the ancient world for instance, in Rome I know they had Vigiles to patrol the streets later on. If you wanted a matter settled you went to the courts in Democratic Athens, if you were important enough and had the money that is. Same in Rome, although you also had patrons who you could go to for assistance if you were a plebeian, but you had to do them favours in return - a bit like the Mafia. Essentially what I'm saying is this is how they behaved in the ancient world and in THEIR view yes they got what they deserved because it was blood cleansing blood for prior actions taken against Caesar and his stabbing by Brutus and his Republicans on the senate floor. It's a matter of perspective. The real question is did killing Caesar change anything? The Republican supporters would have said yes, else they wouldn't have believed in their cause. But it was too late by that stage because Caesar had already set the wheels in motion by his many reforms for the establishment of a singular ruler which is what Augustus became. I am not in favour of Caesar's action nor the Republicans, but I can see why Caesar did it - he wanted to take the power out of a few rich senator's hands who owned all the land and worked it with slaves taking citizen and freedmen's jobs - and transfer opportunities to ordinary people so they could have land jobs etc. The catch was you had The age of the Emperor emerge which in itself presented it's own problems...
It has been honour and pleasure leading you. I am sorry we could not be better. You must look yourself now. Save your skins. Give my best to my mother. Tell her... Tell her something suistable.
RIP Ray Stevenson, walk the fields of Elysium, brother.
