Hi Gareth! Thanks for an excellent review. I was a big fan of Howard Jones in the 80's (and I still am). Great to here parts from his fantastic songs again and I must say the sounds on the FA-06/08 are amazing! I think I must visit a music store and try this synth! I just discovered you on RUclips and have enjoyed your demos and reviews over the last weeks. To this end I just ordered the FA-06 rather than the FA-08 only because of space issues here in my "home studio". After reading uncounted reviews and sound samples the Roland seems to be at the top of the heap for a "workstation style keyboard" for under $2600.00, at least to what I've read. I was looking at the Yamaha Motif XF6 but people droned on and on about how ugly it was to work through the menus to achieve the desired sound. As a longtime rock 'n' roll guitarist and an older than dirt player I found myself wanting something "smoother tonally" to play with. I have high hopes for my new endeavor and sincerely appreciate your time and efforts for us all. Please know there's lots of us our here who check your link on a regular bases :-)
+William Jasper I'm glad you discovered my channel and thanks for the comment and words of encouragement! i'm currently testing a motif xf and it's a great instrument but i agree with you on its ease of use (or occasional lack of). i have an amusing video coming up on this topic :) congrats on the new keyboard, i'm sure you will enjoy it!

Mr woody, listen to the following performances by Joe sample.."it happens every day, and"carnival of the night",then Christopher cross:'"sailing".then go get your fa 08 out of storage.i promise you won't be bored!
Hello woody is there any chance of you starting a synth tutorial channel where you show how to play the songs you've used Or point us in the right direction for learning them Many thanks Ian
i'd like to do more tutorials in the future, but best when figuring out songs just to use your ear and try and find the right notes, that's the best training.
Hey....Have you tried loading any SVQ files into the FA...im using Fantom X7 and a G6...use my X7 as main due to 76 keyz and i prefer its sequencer a looooot more then the G....If you have used SVQ files how well (sound) do they come acroos on the FA. Cheers

Hi Woody. Really enjoying your reviews. I am looking to get a new board and have been steered towards the Motif XF7. I have played the XF7 and the MOXF8 and wasn't really taken by either of them although they did have some nice effects (for example the fret slide is great!) - I also got to try the Roland FA-06 was not overly impressed by the keys but was mightily impressed by the sounds, especially the Synth Leads they sound amazing. I really am looking for an 88 key (73 minimum) but was underwhelmed by the MOXF8 and confused as hell by the interface. So, I guess what I am asking is. For a pick up and play board, of the ones mentioned. Which one would you go for? Or, would you go for something different? Thanks
Woody Piano Shack hi wow thanks for the quick reply. Sorry should have said the shop did not have an FA08 I could try but is definitely close to the top of my list :)
Woody Piano Shack thanks for the tip :) I am going to re watch your wrap up video on the Fa / motif / moxf again :) But definitely leaning towards the fa08 now. just need to play it so I can feel the action. Can you belive the shop is recommending I buy it just to try it?!? crazy!
I've had the FA-08 since it first came out and I've been loving it! The action was a bit stiff at first, but once that got broken in, it's been a dream to play on. Woody is absolutely correct about the synth sounds, and honestly the accoustic sounds are most definitely useable. I've also downloaded the additional sounds from Roland's Axial website and that alone provides tremendous value! It's a powerful board that 2 years later, I'm still discovering things on. I highly recommend it! Woody does justice to it in his demos and it's refreshing to see and hear a lot of the classic 80's tunes being accurately recreated on the FA-08! Thanks Woody!
I've gotten my own Roland FA. Could you please go into more detail how the axel-f is created? I would very much like to replicate it as accurate as possible.
Thank you for replying. Why did you get rid of the FA? Were you not pleased with it? Or was it just to make room for new gear? I'm also getting the Roland Boutique JU-06. Have you tried any of those or Yamaha's Reface-series?
Hi Woody, great job there! I was just wondering what preset you used for Axel F and Jump, I own a FA-08 and get a bit lost with all these sounds. Thanks in advance. Best. Sergi
i don't know, don't have the fa any more. check my axel f tutorial video, I think in the background you can see the display of the FA and the patches that I used. But I did tweak all of them using the real time controls.
cars-gary numan axelF-harold F. jump- van halen just cant get enough-depache mode whats love-howard jones friends electric-gary numan best regards, Also a synth nerd
Woody, what version of FA would you recommend? Is 08 suitable for shredding (fast solo)? Is heavy keyboard suitable for other instruments (not pianos)?
no, it is not at all suitable for shredding, the action is very sluggish and heavy. it's fine for piano and electric piano, but not ideal for the other instruments. you could get a FA06 but I've heard the build quality and keys are not great (the 08 is solid). How about a FA08 + midi-controller for best of both worlds, then you can have different sounds and feel on each keyboard, that would be sweet.
I'm in love with all the sound possibilities, and I'm planning to buy a synthesizer, but with some training in classical piano, the idea of having me to squeeze in 3 or 4 octaves is something that bothers me a lot in these instruments. Could you recommend some synthesizer with at least 5 octaves? (if it has more, even better) Budget $ 1,000, but I agree to spend more if there is no alternative. Many thanks for your support! Subscribed!
@@ph_stuff you’ve probably made your decision by now (3 yrs later), but now Roland has the FA07 - extra octave over the 06, and a much much better keybed. Semi-weighted and actual keys a bit bigger. You should be able to get a used one for US$1000 - I did here in Perth Australia about 6 months ago.
I owned one of these for a few days but took it back to the shop. I found the super natural sounds to be great but only a few of the main sounds such as piano are super natural. A lot of the bread and butter sounds such as brass instruments, accoustic guitares etc are very dated and cheesey sounding PCM style and sound like they were pulled from the D50. Roland even seem to acknowledge this and let you download better sounds for free off their website but even these are't that great. Furthermore the MPC style pads are not touch sensitive which makes them pretty useless in my book. I now use a MOTIF XF which has great sounds across the board and has 2 Gb of sample memory to load third party HQ pianos etc.
Hi I noticed you don't know how to turn off the velocity sensitivity. Here is how you do it: Menu - System - Keyboard - Keyboard Velocity and change from REAL to a velocity. If you want to do this for one track in a studio set Open the Studio set then click Shift + Part View - MIDI Rx Filter - VC and put it to 4 for the needed track. (1 = Most difficult to get loud, 4= Easiest to get loud) Hope this helps.
Great sounds, wow! Are your synth programs available for download? This would be very cool. Your videos are the best demos of the Roland FA workstations on youtube. Keep up your great work!
+TheTomkittelkey thanks for the great comment. i'd be happy to share my sounds, just not sure how to do the export, and then how to share on the net. i've had a few requests for this so I'll look into it.
You can export your sounds same way you import them. Go to Song util and Export song as a WAV (Stereo Mix) Now you can copy the file from the Export folder on the SD card to your PC Very easy :D
Midi designer pro offers a third party editor for the supernatural synth engine has nearly all the parameters for the three osc on one screen....thought you would like to know that
Roland are the absolute worst for usability. It's always been as if they've actually gone out of their way to make the workflow a convoluted nightmare. Nice Jones again by the way 😉

+Woody Piano Shack yeah... Ill go with Fa08... Thanks
Mr woody, listen to the following performances by Joe sample.."it happens every day, and"carnival of the night",then Christopher cross:'"sailing".then go get your fa 08 out of storage.i promise you won't be bored!
i enoyed your video can you do more video on the fa-06 thnaks
+EgidioSavelli thanks for the comment, sure! there are some more videos of the fa08 coming up.
Need to replace my beloved XP30! Can the Fa series come close to the renowned Tenor express sound? The Yamaha XS and Kronos 2 can’t touch it.
thanks woody, for your demo of the fa08. just like korg kronos, it's filled with good stuff, but the menu diving is too time consuming for me :-/
yes, reluctant to try a kronos for that reason.
Hello woody is there any chance of you starting a synth tutorial channel where you show how to play the songs you've used
Or point us in the right direction for learning them
Many thanks Ian
i'd like to do more tutorials in the future, but best when figuring out songs just to use your ear and try and find the right notes, that's the best training.
Thanks for the response woody
hi! can you show the screen sir thank you
Gary Newman I did play Cars on my D20 I believe.
Hey....Have you tried loading any SVQ files into the FA...im using Fantom X7 and a G6...use my X7 as main due to 76 keyz and i prefer its sequencer a looooot more then the G....If you have used SVQ files how well (sound) do they come acroos on the FA. Cheers
no i haven't, and was not familiar with that file format, so thx.
here after your reply on your jd-xi video.. workflow doesn't look anywhere near as immediate on the fa.. be interesting to have seen you have both the jd-xi and the fa and trying to achieve the same tune on both.. great playing tho mate.. good job.. ps I love Sweden great choice of place to live
Thanks
hi, why is the FA08 not on your list?
Woody Piano Shack hi wow thanks for the quick reply. Sorry should have said the shop did not have an FA08 I could try but is definitely close to the top of my list :)
:) FA all the way if you're into synth sounds. or wait NAMM trade show in Januaru, it might be time for Roland to refresh that model.
Hello. Thanks for your great vídeos about fa roland! How do you create rythms?
+Ricardo Lérias thanks for the awesome comment! I program drum tracks on my PC using Reaper.
+Woody Piano Shack thanks for your reply. Im waiting for more greating videos!
Hi , I'm a keyboard player and keen on buying the fa 08. I'd like to know if the keyboard has the smooth sound transition like korg kronos.
yeah, you can change patches and the previous sound will sustain, if i remember correctly
Which is the song being played at 5.21?
I've gotten my own Roland FA. Could you please go into more detail how the axel-f is created? I would very much like to replicate it as accurate as possible.
sorry, that's all i have, plus no longer own the FA. but it was just finding the closest preset and then tweaks to filter and fx.
Thank you for replying. Why did you get rid of the FA? Were you not pleased with it? Or was it just to make room for new gear? I'm also getting the Roland Boutique JU-06. Have you tried any of those or Yamaha's Reface-series?
epic!
Awesome vid. Do they also have these soundpatches for reason DAW?
no these patches are not available as a plugin for your daw
Great video ! How did you create the Rhythm/Drums ? Is it from inside the FA08 ?
everything you hear is FA
Hi Woody, great job there! I was just wondering what preset you used for Axel F and Jump, I own a FA-08 and get a bit lost with all these sounds. Thanks in advance. Best. Sergi
i don't know, don't have the fa any more. check my axel f tutorial video, I think in the background you can see the display of the FA and the patches that I used. But I did tweak all of them using the real time controls.
Or could you share your sounds as a download?

whats the song you played at 4;45 and did you create it
+George Ashmore 3rd that's a cover, i'm still hoping that someone will be able to name all 5 songs so I won't give the answer away yet...
I have Roland f-20 piano which has the same keys as in FA-08. So FA-06 looks better variant for me :)
FA-07 is out now. Semi-weighted action, which is a perfect blend for more solid feedback and speed (in my opinion).
Sorry for the ignorance (just entering now into the world of synthesizers), but would this thing be a workstation, a synthesizer, or both???
since it is a synth + sequencer + multi-fx unit + sampler, this is very much in the workstation category!

It's never too late to learn new things about a subject we like. Thank you for the answer!
I now use a MOTIF XF which has great sounds across the board and has 2 Gb of sample memory to load third party HQ pianos etc.
sorry cant name em tell me what it the song was. please
see comment from ed ay
I give. Tell me
Hi I noticed you don't know how to turn off the velocity sensitivity. Here is how you do it: Menu - System - Keyboard - Keyboard Velocity and change from REAL to a velocity. If you want to do this for one track in a studio set Open the Studio set then click Shift + Part View - MIDI Rx Filter - VC and put it to 4 for the needed track. (1 = Most difficult to get loud, 4= Easiest to get loud) Hope this helps.
yeah, was struggling to find that setting, thx!
Go to Song util and Export song as a WAV (Stereo Mix)
Now you can copy the file from the Export folder on the SD card to your PC
Very easy :D
Midi designer pro offers a third party editor for the supernatural synth engine has nearly all the parameters for the three osc on one screen....thought you would like to know that
What's the name of the "iconic lead"? in the fa08
+Cowboy 13ebop The second saw is very good, almlst the same
in good way you sound like dave gorman
haha, if you say so :)
Roland are the absolute worst for usability. It's always been as if they've actually gone out of their way to make the workflow a convoluted nightmare. Nice Jones again by the way 😉
At leat he fessed up to how hard it is to use. As for the bloke in the comments that still has his new in the box after buying it months ago. He be in for a shock when it sounds like a church organ all the time. More money than sense me thinks.
