  • Cymru was once a common setting for American and British movies. THE PROUD VALLEY was released in 1940 from Ealing Studios and written specifically for its star, the American communist Paul Robeson. Here I take a look at the star, his cultural and political leanings and how they contributed to a film which poses questions for modern Welsh internationalists.

Love this review Nick, especially thrilled to see the close up shots of my Aunty Dilys who played the little girl in the film. Great outro music too, thanks.

Big diolch Robert. I did send out some tweets when reviewing the film to see if anybody cold track down Auntie Dylis, but to no avail. So, it was lovely to read your message. Cofion, Nick

Paul Robeson was a hero. The USA should apologise for what it did to him.

    *Wow!* *What an incredible critique!*
Besides your believable respect, appreciation and fondness of the screenplay, acting and technical and historical aspects, it is *wonderful* to hear that it was Mr. Paul Robeson,🤴🏿 of all the individuals of access and exposure to you during your lifetime, up to the creation of this piece, to spark a deep enough interest in your own ethnocultural heritage to research your great country's rich film history!💐
*Congratulations* and *thank you* for producing this *terrific,* unforgettable, important critique video!💫

British culture discourages us from exploring Welshness by painting it as insular, xenophobic and even racist. It's been a successful tactic over many generations. So yes for me, to see someone like Robeson embracing Wales and starring in a film here, was one of a few massive moments of realisation.

The scene where David gets the attention of the choir is a showstopper. Robeson's best film.

Proud to Welsh full stop. I'd suggest a channel called Britainshiddenhistory Ross as he goes over about 130 subjects in Welsh history. Where most of these subjects are all but left out of the new Book for educators in Wales. Our country seems to be getting a re-write. Take Tintern Abbey for example where it gets mentioned, only for the founder to be completely ignored. No ancient Welsh kings either. Wales is Britain, as its the nation of the Britons. Or atleast those who hold to their ancestors culture. Whats worse is Robeson is mentioned and the author claims the Welsh played a main role in the slave trade. Which ofcourse is utter nonsense, tell that to the thousands of miners who were all but slaves themselves.

Really loved watching and learning with you. By the by, I really recommend you speak the quotes, maybe even get a different voice to read them, as it would help immersion and for those of us who watch these videos while doing dishes or the like.

Diolch Ian. Yes you're right, I did record them but something went wrong in the edit. Something normally does. Attention Deficit strikes again! Nick
