I finally got a pair of Cornwall IV’s! For the first few days I was feeling that they were fine, but not a long term keeper. THEN I raised them up. I put a pair of 2x4s under them and the definition improved. I finally settled on 4x4s which raise them up 3.5” and that did 3 things. Improved midrange clarity. Gave me a higher soundstage. And most importantly, decongested the low end. With the two 4x4s, it gets the speaker off the floor and IMO allows the LF pressure to wrap around the bottom of the speaker, and it sounds less boxy. These inexpensive “stands” changed my Cornwalls from sleepers to keepers!
I enjoyed this episode immensely and enjoyed Andrew's subjective descriptions regarding comparing various Wharfedale speakers. My first pair of large speakers were purportedly designed by Wharfedale. Good afternoon from Toronto ☕️ I’ve always been a proponent of fix the room ( yes, I watched your videos when you did the main room at your place) and it generally fixes the speaker ( along with proper placement and power) 😎 Have a great weekend.
Getting the speaker/room interaction right through placement is one of the best tweaks you can do and it's 100% free, yet it's the one thing more enthusiasts DON'T DO, which is weird to me.
It’s the first thing I do when someone asks for my input/help in setting up their listening room/environment. I see their space ,have a sit down and a ☕️..and ask them questions . Thank you so much for the response and all the details you included on your placement-testing process! Sure, it's nerdy, but it's 100% the comprehensive advice I was looking for. Now I've got a date tomorrow with my umik mic and Focal 936s, just gotta find my laser pointer. Looking forward to this free upgrade to my sound!
It really does, providing a full, powerful and engaging modern vintage sound, perfect for my mostly metal vinyl collection. Always enjoy the channel and keep it loud! Cheers.
Hi Andrew and Kristi. Loved "the dip" discussion. Peter Comeau, the great speaker designer for Wharfedale, Mission, etc., clearly is known for tuning his speakers by ear rather than strictly by measurement. Clearly he would be aware of the dip, but obviously feels it "sounds" better as he intended with the dip, the dip complainers be damned. Peter's work speaks for itself. Looking forward to Sunday, Thanks again for all your hard work. Just for the record, I watched and loved the Arcam review. Makes me sad that lack of interest from the majority will likely limit such reviews going forward.
I think measurements take you so far, but then it's up to personal preference and gut feeling-at least from a design perspective. If you rely 100% on measurements, in my experience, you end up with a boring-ass speaker.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews and @user-ej3ii8zm2b - I just listened to a really interesting podcast that John Darko did with Peter Comeau (busting "Hi Fi Myths" from some time last year), and there is a discussion of a "dip" in what's called the "presence region" that was specifically engineered into BBC speaker designs in order to make vocals less in your face when in a near-field monitoring situation, (in the early days of radio and TV: especially mixing live in a van outfitted with recording gear). Comeau basically says that the "depth" in a stereo image is an illusion created by the influence of that dip that has arisen in later designs from designers who were influenced by the BBC monitor designs. In that podcast, he also explained that he tunes by ear but uses measurements to figure out what he's hearing so he can find a solution to the problem.
They look cool......a classic modern approach...... I'm a fan of 3-way speakers and dome midranges since the Infinity Kappas.....with a good Sub.....I would say its a killer trio.....👍
I'm not done watching the review yet. However, I had to comment on "Get it together Robinson!" That's always a great open 😂. BTW, I watched the Arcam video Kristi. 🙋🏾♂️. Ok. Back to the review... 😁
I wonder how these compare to the Wharfedale Diamond 12.2's at around a... 7' 6" distance? Not that I own a pair... or have a smallish living room. Or that I need to upgrade. Cough. 😂
Speaker measurements usually doesn't show how it will sound like. A flat measuring speaker only shows that it sounds accurate and sometimes it might not sound good. Speaker sounding good is usually a combination of various factors. For example crossover parts. Various capacitors will sound different depending on their quality. Speaker cone material and stiffness also affect its sound. Stiff cones e.g. aluminum will mostly have a forward detailed midrange while soft cones e.g. paper cones will sound laid back. Same with tweeter dome materials. Speaker drivers' motor structure will also affect how the overall speakers will sound like.
Well said, Rob. Although it can help us know how it will "likely" sound, for example, bumped-up mids, rolled-off treble, high or low bass shelf, etc. Measurements are just part of the equation and a good guide, but they are not the whole picture. And all the stuff you mentioned as well-:) Cheers.
The observation at about 21:30 which says in effect that these are speakers you can just listen to and be happy matches my experience. I got these to get a somewhat Linton like sound in a smaller room (I have Lintons in a bigger room in my house but their bass would overload my smaller office). And for me they delivered. I wasn't looking for something to do super critical listening with, but I do want to play music a lot and enjoy it - including in the background. Yes you need to toe in to fit your room and listening position - like very many speakers - and, yes, I prefer grills on with these (but not with say, Elac DBR62s). You also have to like the retro look. But if you are looking for this kind of sound and style, they are rather good. And yes indeed. These are not mini Lintons. They are though for a smaller room which I find a Linton will overload.
My current speakers (Mirage M-3si) are meant to be used with the grilles on; in fact you can't remove them, except with great difficulty because of the design. I'm used to seeing speaker reviews with the frilles off in all the photos; I prefer the grilles on, personally.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for doing this! I see so many systems which have stupid amounts of money invested (usually Mac and B&W gear for some reason) with catastrophically poor setup. The speakers will be flat against the front wall or worse- all the way out against the side walls.
Glad you enjoyed the video, please keep in mind it is impossible to completely judge a person's setup purely off of an image. Without dimensions and their subjective feelings on what they're hearing it's virtually impossible to know if a setup is bad or good. Just because a speaker is up against the wall doesn't automatically mean it's going to sound bad. Just because a speaker is near a corner, doesn't always mean it's going to be bad or boomy.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Man......now that is on target.☝ Our Klipsch ChorusII's are 8 inches from the front wall. An older, first model Hsu Research Vtf-3 (front firing version) in the corner, front right about10 inches out.. Purchased it in 2003. The ChorusIIs in 1998. Still love BOTH. This getting older business.🙃 I had to look up our Hsu purchase..2003? Pretty damn good sub!. Anyway, this build back better thing🤮 has us locked in place for any changes in gear. Lucky we have what has lasted for so long. Systems are an old Yamaha RX-V2700 5.1 and using the same speakers and sub for the 2 channel is a Decware Zen-ufo2.1 . All good in the sticks. Even the coyotes and wolves sometimes sing to it playing LOUD in the night. All the best to you both🤝. By the way, I think I have posted images of our front room and modest system back when we had 'unsocial media' accounts. You're Fb or Twitter/X page. We just get banned...because we are such disturbing MONSTERS!🤣 unreal these days...🤷♂ I suppose, we're just not very peoply!
@@andrewrobinsonreviews you are obviously correct, of course: it’s possible that a system could sound good regardless of the speaker placement. It was more of a generalization and you kinda mentioned the same when you outlined why you measure the right speaker and not the left one: the left one is colored by the room more than the right due to the corner. That “colorization” and soundstage smearing from early reflections is typically more pronounced the closer the speakers (or the listening position) is to a wall or a bookshelf or whatnot. I guess it doesn’t mean it’ll sound “bad” per se, but….
I was confounded by the recent announcement of the Super Denton, as I'd JUST augmented my office system's Denton 85s with a little REL sub, after which my wife and I agreed they sounded better than the Lintons in our main setup -- it's a really great pairing that I doubt you could get from a single box speaker of such small size (I'd still love to hear the Super Dentons). Incidentally, in my experience all the Wharfedale heritage models need more power than the specs imply (my Dentons run on a Rega Elex-R, 90W into 6 ohms). Fantastic speakers all around for us "normal folks" who are skeptical of audiophiles but want our records to sound great.
Someday I’d like Andrew to discuss the 400hz “mud” that I often hear… and in the old days, dipping the EQ there brought so much clarity to so many systems (home _and_ sound reinforcement)
I have both the Linton’s and the Heresy IV’s. I feel like I should get rid of 1 of them but so far I haven’t been able to. I love what I would call the warmth and body of the Linton’s but I love the Heresy’s spacious room filling sound. I will say I am really interested in the new Leak Sandwich 250’s though. Hope you guys can maybe review those sometime in the future.
Yoooo!! Muchas gracias for the tip with the laser point. This whole time I been following you I was always saying how those hey gets his speakers so align and perfect staged. I’m literally like 🤯 mind blowing right now.
I watch everything you guys make and I did somehow skip the Arcam video. I have since went back and watched it and, of course, loved it. Sorry for missing it initially!
I have the Arcam SA20; I highly recommend watching Andrew’s review of the A25. The 100 watts it provides are legit and its current delivery is the best you’ll get for the money.
Would be great to see a comparison of the Super Denton v the new Mission 750. I would expect the SD to be “warmer” than the more clinical Missions. Both are similarly priced.
Happy to see that you mentioned my comment on the unplugged show, a sincere thank you. I thought, price wise, the comparison to the Focal Vestia 1 was a fair one, same price. It is quite clear that you both are not fan of such speaker. The sound is, more often than not, a personal preference but I strongly disagree on the looks and built quality which are excellent, at least to my eyes. Finally, a comparison to the Heresy IV is unfair because those Klipsch, at 3 times the price, are in a league of their own.
@kristiwright , I have to take issue, in a friendly way with Andrew’s comment about the r700’s are hard to “get going”! I’ve gotten a pair recently and my vintage Carver monoblocks make them sing! Granted my amps love 425w @ 4ohms! But I find lower level listening to be very balanced and crystal clear. I’m a proud new papa!
Great video, as usual! I would like to ask for a special video explaining (and showing) step by step the process you just explained here on speaker placement. Greetings from Spain!
I’m glad I caught this video. I missed live broadcast. I felt ambivalent after seeing your review of the Super Dentons on June 16th. I was hoping for Kristi’s thoughts also, and today I caught it. The Super Dentons are at the top of my list if I decide to upgrade speakers. I’ve been lusting for the Lintons, but concerned about suitability in my small listening room. Then the Dentons were announced. This discussion is helpful for this choice. Also I’m on fixed income now in retirement and have to budget accordingly, and saving a couple of hundred bucks can go towards a streamer. Thanks for all your work, it is appreciated. 👍🏼😎🎶
Can you guys do measurements at the listening position as well as nearfield on your speaker reviews to help better illustrate things like the dips and convergence? Since so many people look at graphs instead of listening to their ears it may help to illustrate things. Thanks for all your records and work.
DOH! You HAD to do it.. I JUST posted about how I was so glad you made these vids without making us feel like we owe you for it.. and then 2:51 happens and I'm left there thinking.. "wut.. am I Carl now?"
Love you guys!!! Please give me your thoughts comparing these to the Evo 4.1 that you guys both liked, with the AMT tweeter, which you preferred over the Lumina. Thanks and God bless!!!!
I made a comment the first time I viewed this about your first review of the Super Dentons. I said I felt ambivalent. Well I’d like to take that back. I wasn’t paying attention my first viewing. After rewatching that review again, paired with this Unplugged video, I feel like I got the most comprehensive explanation of these speakers. This is a great concept with the review followed by this dialogue between you and Kristi and the Q & A format. I believe this episode today is my favorite review of yours. Thanks so much. I hope you guys continue this style. 👍🏼😎🎶
Good morning K&A, since watching and/or listening to the vast majority of your yt reviews (and, of course, these wonderful Unplugged commenting on comments vids of late) there are 2 questions that I keep wondering about. 1. Do you guys have a room in your house that's like a speaker 'graveyard', where you store all those speakers that you don't sell or ship back to the manufacturers? Something similar to that room with the Martin Logan's from that Asian family all those years ago? And 2. Is(/was) Carl a real person? Genuine curiosity, not being facetious. Also - and again - thank you both for taking the time and spending the energy to test and properly and honestly review all the equipment for all of us that do not have the means (i.e. time, money, graveyard rooms, etc.) to do it so extensively as you do! I'm sure I speak for a lot (A LOT!) of people when I say that you've helped me make a much better choice on what to invest in to get a much better listening and viewing experience in my own home, than I would have had if I had to figure it all out for myself! Have a wonderful weekend and I can't wait for tomorrow's review! Much love from Holland
Was really interested by your comment on power and the Lintons. I am typically driving mine off a Naim Uniti Atom, and the sound is great. I've put them in with my Cambridge CXA-81 before and was fine but preferred the former. Obviously the Cambridge has more power so is it a case of not every Watt sounding the same? Or do I need to put some serious power through the Lintons to hear the very best?! Thanks, love the content as always - Super Denton's Vs Sonus Faber Lumina IIs a tough one... Lumina II Amators even??
I will probably never listen to a Denton or any commercial speaker after diy. But I like the mid dome . Also I promise to go back and watch the Arkham video. After I saw the picture I looks cool maybe it's what I have been looking for.
id like to see more all in one home speaker reviews like the jbl authentics 500 etc that can do 250 watts which is suitable for your space. These are usually difficult for an audiophile to justify buying
@@andrewrobinsonreviews sounds like a Robinson Brand speaker placement kit (laser include) product on the horizon. I use magnetic lasers when aiming my lighting projects
My challenge is that I have a roll-off in my right ear (hearing loss) after 2k that I have to compensate for, and I have yet to find any info online on how to deal with that. I seem to always be tweaking to try and find that phantom center, but it's challenging. Do I have to EQ the right channel? I welcome anyone's thoughts on that. Thanks!
A balance control might help somewhat but you’re probably going to have to go vintage with a preamp or integrated that has separate tone controls for the left and right channels. Marantz, Luxman, maybe Accuphase etc. Or a separate eq/equalizer.
Wharfdale, they have been around a long time, harking back to the era of great British Hi-Fi brands. Everyone started with a pair of Dentons, then made the mistake of pairing them with a rubbish Amstrad amp, so you upgraded them to the Lintons, and if anything it sounded worse. Thankfully word got around that you need a decent amp to drive any speaker, getting ther right combination is an art that we are still chasing today. Then along came Q Acoustics and compared to my Dentons they are far better, others may think otherwise even with them you want the originals not the newer "i" variants, perhaps the same goes for the Dentons ?
@@Gman1044 Hey Gman. It refers to comments made about the tweeter and the difference having the grills on makes to soften it a bit. From what I gathered, the other drivers sounded fine without the grills on. So I thought maybe they only need small grills for the tweeters! Hope this alleviates any confusion 😁🙏
I have lumina v. When i saw alot of great review of linton heritage, i tempted to buy it. And big regret. The sound is remind me like Old 70's L100 my dad has (which reconditioned0 its sound muffled. And i sell them instantly.
Hello, off topic question. I am old, my reference system is a Yamaha 810 I-amp with seperate tuner, micro seike turntable, la scala speakers. Gotten old gifted 45 yr old system to kid. Now what? Tried cheap Onkyo, left channel went out, sounded good Bummer. Cheap yamaha was next, with 3 way (cheap) yamaha 3-way speakers (sound good) and a pyle turntable (because of strobe) and decent cartridge. ??? What the hell do I do. Small pensioners budget. Like your programming, should I try cheap audio man, (just me drinking and instigating). Help. Is there a difference audiophile and stereophile, two way speakers no way. help.
It is so hard to pick just ONE. If I had to, it would probably be salsa straight up. If you have never tried Papalote Mexican Grill salsa (sold at Whole Foods), you probably haven't met your favorite salsa. The Chipotle flavor is TDF. This flavor is also 👩🏻🍳 amzn.to/3L0u3V3. I'm surprised no one has mentioned guacamole yet. That may be my number two. I think I make the best guacamole. You must use cilantro, fresh lime, tomatoes and green onion. Oh and plenty of sea salt. Absolutely no queso fresca. You're probably a serial killer if you put that shit on guac.
@@Dehazer2112 Evo is very directional and needs to be pointed right at your ears. Denton 85 is indeed too bright but the treble can be tamed by replacing one of the brass speaker links with a 2 Ohm 10W resistor.
"not audible" coming from People that work on that kinda stuff. Well yeah maybe, but that doesnt mean they know what they re doing. Alot of those Systems are kinda bad when u listen to them so i wouldnt take them as a guranteed right. There are very well things that are not audible, but i want to decide that for myself what i think is important and whatnot, not what someone says that i have no way of validating how much he really knows. Someone works in a supermarket and can be oblivious to what exactly is in my food. Same there ... i think the "professional" badge is taken to seriously often. If what ur saying is correct, then it is correct, no matter what ur occupation says about it.

Also great to hear how Andrew does his speaker reviews. Very interesting and informative.
I did watch the arcan review..excellent!!! Thinking of buying it👍
Thank you! It's very good.
It's a great amp for sure!
The Super Denton midrange dip makes every recording more easy on the ears.
I watch everything you guys make and I did somehow skip the Arcam video. I have since went back and watched it and, of course, loved it. Sorry for missing it initially!
We appreciate it! Thanks!
Thanks! Yes, a bit late but in my defense my wife's mother passed this week so life is a bit edgy. The Denton is good and I am glad you enjoyed it.
Family comes first. Please accept our heartfelt condolences.
Sorry Kristi, I loved the Arcam review and will go out and get one. Please forgive. You two did a great job.
afternoon Andrew,Kristi & Kadie👍👍👍
Good morning KJ, always a pleasure!
Hello!
The Arcam a25 is awesome. I have them on loan from a local dealer right now.
Not mentioned here but Peter Comeau designed the grilles to get rid of edge diffraction (Denton, Linton, Super Denton, Dovedale)
13:05 it was in fact mentioned in the comment.
25:18 is peak comedy! Seeing Andrew's face drop when the wife is about to tear his opinion apart is all to relatable! Lol great episode.
On a few B&Ws and Monitor Audios I had, the sound was definitely better and more open with the grilles off.
It really does vary from speaker to speaker. Thanks for watching!
See you both Sunday... :)
Omg how the channel is growing. So happy
Appreciate the love, thank you!
I love my Denton 80's, the 85's were brighter, seems as thought the Supers are more like the 80's.
I love wharfedale speakers there very forgiving
😂😂😂great beginning 😂😂😂
Good episode. Thank you for tips speaker placement. One question, when will you all release the B&W 801 signature review?
The 801 Signature review is coming very soon.
Can you guys do measurements at the listening position as well as nearfield on your speaker reviews to help better illustrate things like the dips and convergence? Since so many people look at graphs instead of listening to their ears it may help to illustrate things. Thanks for all your records and work.
Tune in, in about 10 minutes and see what we did to make this better for y'all. 😉
Hi, could you give me your opinion on 3 way vs 2way speakers.
So since you measure the right hand speaker, do you swap left and right speaker if your initial measurements come out wonky?
Excellent review , thank you !!!!
Hope you get the Dovedales in this year
Watch the video :)
@@KristiWright YES!!!!! Much love!!!!!!!!!! Always a great watch and you both are a killer combo!!!!
🔥😍 -GREAT RUNDOWN!! Have an awesome weekend you two!! Great watch... #UnpluggedRules
We really appreciate you watching. Have a great weekend!
:)
Next review…. Hmmm. KLH Model 7?
Thanks Andrew, educational. Want to subject you do a Tyler Acoustics Timekeeper T2 review. Wondering what u think.
Hi…. Have you listen to Arcam sa20 since you talk about Arcam 25 . Sound: of course similar but is better ( to me) . Thank you sir.
I will probably never listen to a Denton or any commercial speaker after diy. But I like the mid dome . Also I promise to go back and watch the Arkham video. After I saw the picture I looks cool maybe it's what I have been looking for.
What did you make? A Kit?
Lasers!
Get yourself some lasers! Thanks for watching!
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Laser measures work even better! you get to measure distance as you align!
My Evo's 4.1 are dull and currently collecting dust.
Dali recommends to use grill. Else the speaker is too bright
I have the heresy Iv and I’m done. Of course, I own about six other sets of speakers, but I’m done.
We'll never get rid of them. One day, I hope we can find a permanent place for them in our home.
I too use the same speaker placement method 😎✌🏼
id like to see more all in one home speaker reviews like the jbl authentics 500 etc that can do 250 watts which is suitable for your space. These are usually difficult for an audiophile to justify buying
Watts doesn't matter as much as efficiency.
Wharfdale Heritage might be best overall value in the market. Remind me of my AR 14s of yester years. Linton and Denton owner
They're really good, for sure!
@@andrewrobinsonreviews sounds like a Robinson Brand speaker placement kit (laser include) product on the horizon. I use magnetic lasers when aiming my lighting projects
@@warrensparkes1223 (FYI) We link to everything we use in the video's description.
Good Thanks
Do same method with flash light, as it better represents how sound works, not with a laser pointer.
That's fair. I used a flashlight with my old MartinLogans back in the day.
I’ll be back!
:)

Hi Andrew. Any chance you got Marantz Model M1 around for a review? Hard to find anything reliable about it yet.
We have one but we're still in the early stages of testing.
Was this measurement with grills off?
This is what you're looking for ruclips.net/video/e9s8kcpSbw8/видео.htmlsi=Qt1Fat-V2TNuYhyc -- all covered here in depth.
Wharfdale, they have been around a long time, harking back to the era of great British Hi-Fi brands.
Everyone started with a pair of Dentons, then made the mistake of pairing them with a rubbish Amstrad
amp, so you upgraded them to the Lintons, and if anything it sounded worse.
Thankfully word got around that you need a decent amp to drive any speaker, getting ther right combination is
an art that we are still chasing today.
Then along came Q Acoustics and compared to my Dentons they are far better, others may think otherwise
even with them you want the originals not the newer "i" variants, perhaps the same goes for the Dentons ?
ARE people overlooking the A25?! I was genuinely surprised to hear that!
I have 3 words for you.....
Tweeter only grills 😮🤷♂️😉👍
What on earth does that mean?
@@Gman1044 Hey Gman. It refers to comments made about the tweeter and the difference having the grills on makes to soften it a bit.
From what I gathered, the other drivers sounded fine without the grills on.
So I thought maybe they only need small grills for the tweeters!
Hope this alleviates any confusion 😁🙏
You did a show using room acoustic software (4 years ago, using REW (it's free), I think).
Can you do do that again?
EDIT: The show was 10 years ago.
I have lumina v. When i saw alot of great review of linton heritage, i tempted to buy it. And big regret. The sound is remind me like Old 70's L100 my dad has (which reconditioned0 its sound muffled. And i sell them instantly.
Again with the teaser!
Heh, I use a measuring tape and a notepad to align my speakers. The laser pointer would be faster for sure.
Thanks for sharing
Listen to any speaker with the Theoretica Applied Physics room treatment and everything you believe about speaker placement will be changed forever
Help. Is there a difference audiophile and stereophile, two way speakers no way. help.
*Speaking of DIPS...what is your favorite (snack) dip?*
(Runs off to the fridge…) Chipotle Bitchin’ Sauce from Costco
@jamesmichael900 That is the ONLY answer.
Onion Dip made from Lipton onion soup mix and Knudsen sour cream. No doubt.
@@glennshriver6009 that’s a blast from the past!
Hello from Hong Kong~~
Always good to see you!
Hi Ohno.
Linton is not dark but accurate.
@@Dehazer2112 Evo is very directional and needs to be pointed right at your ears. Denton 85 is indeed too bright but the treble can be tamed by replacing one of the brass speaker links with a 2 Ohm 10W resistor.
You keep dissing my Polk R700s, what's up with that?? :P
I think of Danny Ritchie he things he can fix every speaker with measurements but not listening to them ..I don't trust that guy?
