When TnaG (now TG4, the Irish equivalent of S4C) launched, they used QVC as overnight filler. The QVC presenter would greet the Irish viewers and they would occasionally change the on-screen phone number to the Irish one; I remember Kara Tritton butchering the name of the channel a few times. 😂
a friend of mine had cable TV from a operator in Newbridge in Gwent, back in the late 80's, he told me he could get 2 sports channels, the Childrens channel and Entertainment which i guess was the Sky Channel, once Sky launched on Astra 1A in 1989 his mother couldn't afford it because he was at school back then, so they had the cable TV removed and made do with the 4 terrestrial channels they could get,
Sky Channel was scrambled for cable distribution initially using Oak Orion encryption but later on they pulled the scrambling and went free to air all over Europe via the ECS-F1 satellite
I had cable in Northampton in 1986, basically 3 itv regions, plus sky channel and super channel. It wasn't fantastic, but it was better than just using the aerial (just)
Loved Sky in the early days...l got to watch all the best old American shows l missed out on first time around...they also had all the best cartoons on Fun Factory & DJ Kat...l always assumed it was originally based in Holland though.
