One of the best gear upgrades I have made is compressible cotton towel towellets, they are my toilet paper, fire starter, pre-filter, bandana, and first aid guaze all in one and they significantly reduce bulk and weight and are very versatile. I have been using them for 4 years backpacking, hiking fishing and hunting.

Instead of Para cored Try samson zing it. It is 2.2mm diameter dynema cord. Tensile Strength: 650 lbs and has now noticeable stretch.

This was awesome. Would like to see what the other Vortex Crew packs for 2-3 days, 3-5 days in different types of hunts, like deer, hog, turkey, bear, rams, ect... Most videos online show the pack and all the items on a table, but this was nice to see everything loaded. Can't wait for another "10min" Talk on this subject.

Jack O’Connor said the most important piece of hunting gear is your boots as a person can put up with being wet or cold but you will not leave camp with a lot of blisters on your feet.
Breakfast 2 oatmeals Folgers instant coffee 2 per day
Lunch 1 tuna foil pack and one candy per day.
Dinner 1 Mountain House and yes I do like them but I need to try some different brands.
Skip the bipod, I carry a piece of Velcro to put my Black Diamond walking sticks together, If I’m laying down I just lay gun across pack.
My cook set is a little lighter all I use is titanium pot and spork. I use Smart Water bottle and swayer squeeze full size.
Biggest tip start looking now study backpacking forms for light weight gear, then look at eBay to buy some great deals if you are not in a hurry.
I have one set of Smartwool underwear just for sleeping saved me in Alaska in 9 days of rain to sleep in dry clothes at night.

Great and informative! What caliber rifle is Paul taking with him?

    • @VortexNation
      @VortexNation  2 года назад +1

This one is a 6.5 Creed. Paul got it right before the 6.5 PRC came out, which he says he may have preferred.

I'm curious as to how Paul gets his stove fuel when he gets where he's going, since you can't bring it on a plane. When I go backpacking in Colorado, I just swing by REI on my way to the trailhead. But that's not an option when you're in Alaska or anywhere else that's super remote.

I find people get far too hung up on the upfront cost of this stuff, and often over look the long term value of the gear that is used for a hobby and many times once in a lifetime hunts... which even if you buy something for a once in a lifetime hunt, you can often use that gear for other hunts and purposes.

Lots of great helpful and useful ideas. I institute many of the same or similar ideas and gear. I couldn't agree more, sick and tired of Mountain House and I love Airalpineaire!!
I always look for multiple use items when extended hiking and hunting. Do away with your ball cap and get a light weight, thin, full brim hat that you can just stuff in your bag. Especially if you're going to be above tree line and potentially having full sun exposure. Additionally it can be used as a pre filter on a water filter. Just wrap it around the filter and it'll filter out any large chunks or tadpoles. LOL
Second, throw away that ramen, it's trash. Pre-portion NON instant oatmeal in ziplock baggies. I like to add raisins and craisins in the ziplock bags as well.
Lastly, my grandpa was born in Canada my dad was born in Minnesota. There is no way in hell I'm only taking 10 rounds of ammo with me, that must be the Canadian side of you coming out. 😜 Being born and raised in Texas, I guess I'm spoiled or whatever you want to call it. But I'm doubling or even tripling that amount of ammo, if not more. Heaven forbid you knock your scope and have to re-sight it in while you're out in the wilderness. Wolf's, bears, who knows what else you might need it for. To many variables for me to only be carrying 10 rounds ....
LOVE the bleach comment. To many people who carry fancy water filtration systems think that is their cure all for water. ALWAYS have backup ways to clean your water. That's the quickest way to ruin and/end a trip, run out of clean water.
