  • World leaders just gathered at the UN in New York to discuss the climate, ahead of the main COP 28 climate conference coming up in November 2023. The president of that event is also the CEO of one of the world's largest oil and gas producers. So how, in the name of all things holy, can we possibly expect to make any progress there? This video has a couple of suggestions.

I think Al Gore gives us a pretty good idea how it happens in this video. The fossil fuel companies have been sending larger and larger delegations to each COP, and the delegates decide who their president will be. Meanwhile the same companies are "advising" politicians privately. They've used money and sheer numbers to capture the decision making machinery.

Sadly, I believe that it's not really a hen house. I don't think this was at all a mistake. I think it just reveals the true nature of our global decision about what we (collectively) are going to do.

CO2 does NOT control the Temp.
The greenhouse effect of CO2 is NOT Linear , its Logarithmic so a lot of the
warming effect is down around the 150PPM , so even if CO2 doubled to
800PPM it would have little effect because we are so near the top of that
      curve.
Al Gore , how glacier national park , u said the glaciers would be gone 6 years
ago, and the north pole would be ice free by 2014 ....... neither happened .
He flies around the world in his private jet telling me I have to cut my carbon
footprint . He is the first climate billionaire with multiple houses and cars.

The basic list of car-related business interests begins with Finance, insurance, marketing, sales and manufacture (as seen on TV). Then construction of roadways, car-dependent housing and commercial development, pay to drive, pay to park, car maintenance, repair, etc. Near last on the list are petroleum industries because the other interests don't care how we power our cars, trucks, ships, airplanes and motorized big boy toys. Yes, a very important message. It's a really great video.(Thanks Dave, this is one of your best)
We must all rail against the corporate greed & inept, captured leadership.
It's the same here in Australia. Many people believed the Labor party winning the federal election in 2022 would be better for action on climate change/emissions reduction...because they believed the greenwash spin during the election campaign. But Labor politicians actually said well before the election that they would continue their support for the fossil fuel industry, & the huge expansion of their coal & gas exports, for decades.
And I feel no solace thinking planet Earth will be fine, because it's not just our own demise at stake. There are thousands of species of plants & animals that would be wiped out, along with us.
We have to demand change. The climate emergency requires an emergency response...not mass expansion of fossil fuel business-as-usual.

The only thing that government can do is tell you to stop doing something you are doing so if you know it's wrong then why wait for them to force you to stop? The fact is that any government that forces their population to completely stop using petroleum will cause a drastic reduction in the quality of life for their people and would likely see a massive uprising over such authoritarian actions. One thing few talk about relative to working to mitigate climate damage and pollution is that innovation drives economies. Old technologies reach a point where there is either no way to improve upon it or that it becomes so expensive to do so no one can afford the products produced. So pairing new technologies with other positive outcomes such as passive energy, solar, wind, and geothermal, as ways of replacing dirty energy create new jobs and new innovations that further create more new jobs. To borrow an old political saw, "It's the economy, stupid."

I'm not talking about falling into the trap, but what is lacking from the current international efforts are ways to deal with the damage that has already been done, on top of trying to limit future damage (again, we cannot avert future damage anymore due to the delay tactics employed in the past and today, but we can for sure limit the potential of what damage can be done from now on). Nobody seems to talk about what to do to mitigate floods, fires, storms and their effects we're already seeing today and which will worsen in the near future for sure. The whole discussion is still centered on the delusional idea that we can somehow "prevent" the climate crisis from happening while it already is unfolding. How do we deal with the damage that is already being done? Not the hypothetical even worse damage (which might soon enough look very conservative compared to then-reality), but the one that already is happening? What do we do about that? This side of the argument is entirely absent from the whole discussion. We need our governments not only to commit to ambitious action (not plans or goals, but action) _and_ to preparation and damage control surrounding what is already lost. Instead, we're still talking about "reaching" a "1.5 Kelvin goal", which in completely infeasible to meet. If we're lucky, and that is a very big IF, we might end up with 3 Kelvin by 2100. 1.5 to 2 Kelvin by 2050 is a realistic expectation. What are we doing about the damage that is done just by that alone, which already is beyond our control as we cannot undo the sins of the past?

While not defending the fossil fuel oligarchs greed for a milli-second, corporate shareholders want their profits NOW, and not watered down by the need for a healthy environment. If this isn't somehow addressed, the number and value of the lawsuits that will emerge from pension funds, insurance companies, et al will be impressive should a shift from profits to survival take hold.

To do your bit, do what I have been doing the last 20 years. I had an ICE car (and still have) but I never drove it that much. Only for bulky shopping and a lot of groceries, or longer trips. Mostly I rode my bicycle. I went to the shops 3 km away by bicycle for small orders. Also went to work by bicycle up to like 10 km from home (weather permitting). Also I have been freezing every winter only using a heater for a few minutes at a time (after a shower). I rugged up instead. In bed I used a plastic soda bottle full of hot tap water (straight out of the faucet). Lasts longer and no need to use power to boil the water. More efficient and cheap way to stay warm (in or out ofbed). I never use an AC Only a fan. If I sleep with a fan I often get cold on a hot night. I just angle the fan right and I don't get the problem. And I'm still doing it and I'm more fit cos of it too. And imagine if everyone else did the same (within reason). How much better off we may have been by now? So I urge everyone to try and do the same (with me) for the next 20 years. I haven't really suffered (thanks to my fan and hot water bottle). Love you, and I love you even more if you can try and do your bit (like you obviously seem to want to). Cos it's not that hard to do this. With this (along with the new fangled breakthroughs) we can do this. But we have to do both, the stuff I do...plus the new inventions (like on "Just Have a Think"). ❤

I have solar panels ( net production over the year ), high efficiency heat pumps, and an EV. I am lucky enough to be able to afford these luxuries. All of these were done based on financial calculation and something that is beyond the reach of the majority of Americans. There is more I could do but there is little financial sense to eat into retirement to do more, it's just so expensive. This is the reality we live with and virtually everything we do will create more pain for the people we need to win over.
We rail on "Al" but it's true, as long as those resources are there, just waiting to be extracted and used, they will be. We can't stop SA from pumping and most of the developing world from using that oil. Until there is a solution to the worldwide demand, most other efforts are futile since some country will provide, if not SA then it will be Russia.
Wind and solar are great but we are still behind the 8-ball on storage.

I do too and am a believer of net zero. Said to see so much wishful thinking taking place on these issues. So much hypocrisy with the public who demand politicians push these policies. I don't like Sunak but him equalising uk policy with that of EU is hardly a betrayal of the world it is being made out to be. There is no sensible arguments about things like insulation here. £26,000 to insulate one uk home. It is not going to happen. I would rather we have more honest debate and maybe an exploration of alternatives. Investing in things like high temperature heat pumps would be more beneficial. In the mean time we can push existing technology into new builds and housing that are already good fits. Lets do the low hanging fruit first.
The truth is the public has to be taken willingly. Even dictatorships have to keep the population happy enough not to revolt..
I hope the channel does not go the route of being overly political or maybe it should looking a "green parties" actual records like in Germany ... Or how they have held back Nuclear in multiple countries since the 80's.

Action Points: 1) EVERYONE(!) get your renewable energy installed. 2) TELL everyone to do the same!
    3) If you've got money, HELP SOMEONE who can't do it themselves.
Conclusion: That way we starve the energy giants into submission!!

The earth will be just fine, lets not panic, that doesn't help at all. The west is doing pretty good, if you look at Europe and the US, we have largely stopped increasing emissions, and the ball is rolling in the opposite direction, EU has gone from around 5000 million tons of CO2 per year around the turn of the millennium to around 3500 now and dropping faster year by yeah, the USA is somewhat lagging behind Europe, going from about 7000 million tons of CO2 to 6000 million tons of CO2 in the same time.
Could it be better? For sure, but looking at 2030 targets, we are ahead in quite a few metrics, and we are increasing the rollout of renewables and EVs faster than expected. The tipping point is pretty close, if we kill our entire financial system we are doomed though.
China on the other hand has gone from 3000 million tons per year at the turn of the millennium to 14 000 million tons of CO2 per year in 2022, and there is no slowdown in sight with 2 new coal power plants opening per week.
Another interesting factoid is that if we had kept developing nuclear power instead of going into coal and gas, we would've had half the level of manmade CO2 in the atmosphere that we do currently.
We will likely meet targets for 2030 early in the EU, possibly the US as well, China and India will destroy all of that progress many times over though, I suggest we try to convince them to build nuclear as a stop gap measure to cut emission levels before 2040.
We also have carbon capture coming, right now it's nothing to write home about, but there are facilities opening that will scrub at least 3 million ton in the next 2 years, and that is just the start with a lot of research ongoing into effective hydrocarbon capture.
