    One of my favourite England teams. Two wingers, a big centre forward, Wilkins as the anchor man, and Keegan and Brooking seemingly going where they wanted. It wouldn't have beaten the world's best at the time but it was good to watch.

    Watched this in a portable telly as I was on a camping hol! It was a great week, Forest won the European Cup (which we also watched on the Portable), England beat Scotland 3-1, and I got pissed nearly every night down the pub with my uncle and his godson! Not, at 16, it took very much to get me pissed! :)

    I was at this game with a mini bus load of drunken Grimsby dockers.. After the game, one of the dockers stuck his head out of the window yelling "we are the people!" The jocks nearly turned our bus over. Great atmosphere, there were more than 100,000 there, since many jocks scaled the outside of the stadium and climbed through the windows. They were sat in the isles of the seats, you couldn't get past them to go to the loo.

    Great third goal by England, When we talk about British teams playing with speed and accuracy that's the template for me, Trouble is it's not just about fitness you still need very skilful players to make it work. Right now both teams are at a fairly low ebb. At least they both have honest, intelligent managers who know the problem.

    I remember this game. Alan Rough! He was always a liability. He didn't know how to dive sideways for low balls. It was amazing how the Scottish camp placed so much faith in him.

    • @bigphil331
      @bigphil331 4 года назад +1

      They had so many players to choose from in the 70s, they got pipped in qualifying for the 74 World Cup by Poland, Poland went on to finish 3rd. They got pipped in qualifying for the 78 World Cup by Italy, Italy went on to finish 4th.

      My father (a Scotsman) always used to remind me about Scotland qualifying in '74 and '78. What he failed to mention was the quality of the opposition. England lost out to Italy on GD.

    • @johnbuggy9121
      @johnbuggy9121 3 года назад +1

      They'd some fine players during the 70s but it was harder to qualify for a World Cup back then. They were unlucky against Poland at Wembley in '73, but I think Italy deserved to win the group for the qualifiers in '78. They had an edge to them that England didn't possess at the time - a battle hardened midfield.

    I remember being in Switzerland at the time of the game, didn't know the score until I stopped some random bloke off the street near Interlaken. Fearing this fella spoke no English, I thought I'd ask him anyway what was the score. To my amazement, he replied '1-0 Scotland, nah wait a minute 1-1 at half time, no no hold on its now 3-1 England, I asked, 'how dyo know that ?' He replied unfortunately I'm Scottish 😂
