Full HEAT is by far the better option against German/US tanks of that tier, much better than APHE (though worse than discarding sabot imo). Good luck penetrating a Jagdtiger or a T29 with Russian APHE
Tbf, the B shell has better penetration on angles and loses less pen over distance. Just doesnt have 230mm of pen. It also has like triple the explosive filler

Thankfully the grind of the Su-122-54 wasn't so bad for me. Since I wanted to skip such (great) tanks as the IS-3, T-44, T-44-100 and a few tank destroyers, I was stuck with the SU-122-54 for a long time. I must say that fully upgraded su-122-54 plays pretty good against 7.0 / 7.3 br vehicles. And the 20 mil autocanons can really save you from some nasty rats (like Foxes).
HEAT round seems weak. I've had a number of APs bounce off of Tigers and Panthers using this vehicle. Makes me want to go back to the SU-152 where at least I can pen everything in use at that BR.

I recently spaded it. It’s really a good TD. 14 AP and 6 HEATFS and you can go on a slaughter.
German tanks have thin sheets of metal plating to stop early war APHE I think it’s add on armor to stop AP round that explode on contact
