Hi, so just a little confused about the lowering of potassium. These diuretic do not work on the collecting duct, which allows for sodium reabsorption due to its high concentration in the urine?
So Thiazides work in the Distal Convoluted tubule to keep Na+ in the urine. If you pass the Distal Convoluted Tubule, you will see the collecting duct: At this collecting duct there is a Na+ & K+ Exchanger. (Pumps Na+ Out of the urine & Pumps K+ into the urine). Although Thiazides don't work on the collecting duct directly, Thiazides cause the concentration of Na+ in the urine to be high, which causes that Na+ & K+ pump to work more and more Hopefully this clears some things up!.
It's videos like this that but a grin on my PCPs face when discussing my medications. Not that I'm trying to be a know it all smart ass, I just like to know what I'm taking and how it works.
I get confused as to if the hydrochlorathiazide is working. Some days I have to run to the bathroom n other days I feel like I may only have to urinate once a day? Is that me not drinking enough water or is it that I don’t have enough sodium in me to push out?
