    Im glad you’re alright. Thanks for sharing this video. From my perspective its educational value is enormous, especially for new pilots. I’ve been reading the comments and answers. Both full of wisdom. I guess vertical landing can be quite challenging in strong wind conditions, a sharp cliff edge, plus uncontrolled vegetation made the rotor worse.
    Overall nice fly. Thanks again!

      Thank you for your kind words. I'm glad you like the video and find it useful. If at least one pilot can learn from my mistakes I'll be happy :D .. Wish you lots of fun and safe flights. Ben

    Strong days with a steep ridge face can often generate rotor turbulence. Landing well back from launch (if possible) can sometimes help.

    • @Benjamin_Pedersen
      @Benjamin_Pedersen  2 года назад +2

      Yes, you're right. But the start and landing area is not steep. The wind was slightly off, from the optimal wind direction and caused turbulence from bushes and small trees. The site really needs some growth trimming

    Beautiful flying site 😀 Too bad with the landing, spoiling a great flying day. Turbulence can be a b*tch 😉 Glad you're OK. Hopefully also the wing. Thanks for posting my Danish friend.

      Yes, it's a really beautiful site 😃
      I had a great day even though i fuc*** up my landing 😬😅 .. Nothing broken or bent on the wing. Thanks my friend - I'm a little bit sore and got some nasty scrathes from blackberrybushes, but other than that, I'm fine 😊

    ...you did handle well until last second, when I think you went into a wind shadow. Hope you're OK and glider has no damages! Similar happened to me about a month ago, strong wind, mid day, and suddenly the wind disappeared with minimal ground speed.

    • @Benjamin_Pedersen
      @Benjamin_Pedersen  2 года назад +6

      Thanks. The wind was at the top end for flying and the direction was a little off, which caused turbulence/rotor from the bushes and small trees. I got some scratches and was a little bit sore, but other than that i was fine, thanks. No damage to the glider.
      Wish you fun and safe flights :)

    In strong wind conditions, it is very useful to land a glider as far as possible away from the sharp cliff edge. 200-300 meters downwind from the sharp cliff edge - a minimum distance for comfort landing with the strong wind.

    • @Benjamin_Pedersen
      @Benjamin_Pedersen  2 года назад +2

      Thanks for your usefull input, but ufortuneately It wasn't possible to land with that kind of clearance. In hindsight I shouldn't have flown this site.

    • @-tyt-258
      @-tyt-258 2 года назад +2

      And why you didn't land on the clear fields on that right of your lading point?

    • @Benjamin_Pedersen
      @Benjamin_Pedersen  2 года назад +1

      @@-tyt-258 the ridge right next to the landing area is vertical and generates a lot of rotor.

    • @-tyt-258
      @-tyt-258 2 года назад +2

      I see it. And when you have enough altitude, you can fly away downwind from the rotor. 2-3-4 thousand meters will be enough to escape the rotor. As for me, it's better to land at 400 meters away on the field rather than land in the bushes near the edge ;)
      But if you lose your altitude and have no chances of gaining it back, the rotor seems more dangerous than soft bushes.

    • @Benjamin_Pedersen
      @Benjamin_Pedersen  2 года назад +2

      @@-tyt-258 Exactly! On an earlier flight I got blown back and flew into rotor. It scared the s*** out of me, and I was lucky to get out of it still flying... I'll choose the bushes anytime ;)
      Wish you fun and safe flights 🤟🏼

  • @pedtrog6443

    Pretty predictable sort of landing given the terrain and conditions at the time. The wind strength and the amount of vegetation around was always going to throw up turbulence and a steep wind gradient close to the ground. Handled it pretty well I thought.

    • @Benjamin_Pedersen
      @Benjamin_Pedersen  2 года назад

      You're right. I was kind of asking for trouble, flying in such conditions.

  • @kenfriend9676

    I have not "hung glid" for 30 years, but I think the basic rule still applies: Don't land directly behind a square-faced cliff.

  • @logmeindangit
    @logmeindangit 2 года назад +2

    If you were to fly that site again in the same conditions, what would you do to land, where, and why?

    • @Benjamin_Pedersen
      @Benjamin_Pedersen  2 года назад +1

      I wouldn't fly that site again, unless the landing area would be cleared of bushes and small trees.
      In hindsight I shouldn't have flown that far behind the ridge, but stayed just behind the ridge and made a vertical landing.

    From your video it looked like a lack of penetration/ in your inter mediate glider,,a little further forward and little sses ,to waste alt if necessary,(always better to overshoot and try again,,I notice all the ridge is sharp edges,(and no beach option),sharp edges ridges are real prone to nasty rotors a long way back,and get more vicious as the wind goes up,,, regards

    • @Benjamin_Pedersen
      @Benjamin_Pedersen  2 года назад

      You're right. I should have flown closer to the ridge in my approach. Didn't get the anticipated penetration and got stuck in rotor. The landing site is very narrow and is a nasty place to land. It really needs some vegetation trimming.

    Thanks for sharing. Hope you are ok! Not so bad landing...I had worst....How comfortable is your Flex 2 harness? I am looking into changing mine after 30 years of use....(I have a Moyes contour)

    • @Benjamin_Pedersen
      @Benjamin_Pedersen  Год назад

      Thanks. Besides a few scratches from the landing in blackberry bushes, I was fine.
      I love my Flex 2 harness - It is very comfortable. Zippers is easy to use and there are pockets for everything. It's easy to pack all harness and glider bags in it, if you plan on flying cross country. I haven't tried other harnesses, so I can't compare it to another harness, but I'll recommend it anyway.
      Happy flying.

    Es un aterrizaje muy corto para las condiciones de viento que habia en ese momento y posiblemente para el nivel del piloto ,lo mejor seria ir fuera de los rotores hacia el campo grande que tenias mas a tu derecha y alejarte mas de la linea de costa hasta que tengas mas nivel y puedas aterrizar mas rapido y seguro ahi, buenos vuelos .
