Konnichiwa! 1961 Holden EK Special Sedan

- It took almost ten years searching, hoping and praying, but I have finally (with the help of Holden/WasabiCars fans) managed to track down an EK Holden that made Kyushu, Japan its home in around the year 2000. The grey-engined sedan was bought by its current owner from a seller in Tokyo, whereupon it received a restoration. No mean feat considering there were no spare parts to be had locally. It currently isn't registered, but there's hope this once Wedgwood Blue (and Snowcrest White roofed) classic Holden will be fixed and back on Japan's roads.

Both monumental and momentous Dan. Mind blown on that one. This is why I love Wasabi Cars.
Wow, that blood red interior is amazing. I can see why he went with this while looking for a Chevy, the looks is so similar. As someone whose project sat for far too long before finally kicking myself in the butt to get it back on the road, I hope he gets the motivation to get it running again. You would have done him a service if this is what it took.
Yeah, the interior and the left side of the cars still look pretty good. Let's hope it gets a move a long. Would be great to see at a car show
These Holden's were actually designed on the Chevrolets of the late 50s.
Im here, watching after my nanna nap, cheers KC Tasmania Australia 🇦🇺🤝🇦🇺
Goodbye 😂 Amazing car and amazing find. I also liked his shed, I want to build one like like that for myself also with a glassroof like that.
NOICE!
Thanks, Marty
It looks like a miniature 56 Chevrolet
Yeah, 56 or perhaps 57. The Aussie General Motors cars were styled 2 - 3 years behind the Chevs
@@wasabicars that’s awesome facts bro.. glad to learn about these cars
damn udatin assembled holden in japan mad story......,thats why the rough button arrangement on dash looks familiar hahaha
Holden did export a number of cars in the early 60s.As stated this is one from Indonesia. There is a lot of history with this particular Holden. It would be nice if there was a way to help this chap with his restoration, he has been kind to show us his car. In the classic car enthusiast world we have a smorgasbord of car trades, as well as parts suppliers who can make this happen. Guys we need to somehow get this project of restoration to happen for this classic car. Not sure how but there is someone who can lead this project,This would also be a great follow up video. Good Luck and best wishes.
Beautiful car , To me it looks like a scaled down version of a 57 Chevy , If you put a 57 Chevy in the dryer it would shrink to this car , This should be your project car , Great job take care
GM Holden literally did that. Look up the fc also.
Goodbye from under the bus!! Haha that was priceless Dan…
That Holden is pretty special - remember that for every papier-mache repair you find, each one makes the car lighter - and faster!
I liked the old Yamaha Minibike tucked up behind… quite a collectors piece.
Thought of you a couple of days ago when I went past a broken-down AZ-1 on the M1 here in the UK (very very rare) - one door was up, looking like he was signalling for rescue!
Great vid Dan, keep ‘em coming.
Wow! Amazing! I hope he manages to get on the road again, even in its 'Boro Boro' state! If he ever needed parts sourcing from Australia, I'd be happy to help, admittedly EK stuff ain't exactly plentiful here anymore either! Great video, thanks again!🙂🇦🇺
I guess it wasn't uncommon for Japanese and English cars to be repowered with 202s and 250 falcon motors when they failed. But that's because they don't need much to stay running!
I hope he can get some parts out of Australia. I'm sure there would be a good gaurd around and trims he could use!
now that's pretty cool, interesting that it came from Bali originally
"...you asked to see it." Had me dying Daniel!
They do say they are a poor man's Chev
Real cars are steel cars
;-)
Should get it back on the road !
What a beauty! Great video! Thanks for sharing such awesome stuff! Stay safe!
Thank you :)
Thank God its in a shed
What an amazing find. Hope the beautiful EK Holden is saved. It is a survivor 👍😃❤️
Thanks, John. I feel the intention is that it be saved. I just worry slightly about the motivation of the owner. He certainty has good intentions.
that should be the project car!
As an FB/EK lover, a carspotter, and semifrequent visitor to Japan, this is awesome!
Thanks, Andrew. Yeah, I'm a liver in Japan, but am all about Holden. I've tracked down a handful of old Holdens here, and fingers crossed there's more to come. Thanks for watching
Dude what a find. (I feel I say that a lot with your videos) if he ever needs parts let me know.
If I was in Japan and saw this I'd do a backflip, simply amazing to see an old EK Holden in Japan.Awesome for you Dan great video mate 👍🍺
I would have back flipped but I had me seatbelt on ;-) Thanks for watching, Harrison
You should try and find a 86 or 87 turbo mirage over there. Use to be heaps in NZ but you don't see them anymore.
Good news. I "try and find" any and every thing at all times
56 Chevy in the front, maybe a 56 Pontiac in the rear, totally cool!
Yeah, GM styling influence all over it. It, like all Holdens until the very late 1960s, were actually designed in Detroit.
What an amazing car and an amazing find! I hope the project will advance quicker now you have visited him! It took you nine years to visit, I was afraid you would declare Wasabi Cars to be done... 🤣
How did your learn about it in the first place?
0:43 yeah we're doing alright, could be better considering the 107 spots of forest/bush fires that was started by terrorists taking advantage of hot weather here. Hope you doing better Daniel.
4:25 hey that looks nice, that wagon is cool. I'll have one in that same blue thank you.
Fires?? Damn. Hot as heck here, to be honest. Summer will pass, and I cannot wait!
@@wasabicars yeah :/
Yeah, another Holden in Japan.I personally like EK because it looks like a "mini Chevrolet Bel Air".Also British built Vauxhall Victor F can be considered another similar car
The FX/FJ Holdens look very much like the Vauxhall Velox (48-51), too
@@wasabicars You have some reason,Holden many times was inspired by another GM products
Not a big fan of the EK but so cool to see it Japan.
Love the song btw.
From an fb and ek owner this video is super cool to see 😎
Thanks, Brendon 👍
Wow!!
The 1st Holden I heard of hear in the US was the mad max car.
The black one? That was an Aussie Ford Falcon. Of course, there were many Holdens in those movies.
Mate, when everything back to normal you should visit Indonesia. probably you know that we are massive die hard old Holden!
If there are "massive die hard" in Indonesia then why do people keep selling them to foreigner (mainly Aussies) who will re-export them and sell for expensive price when there are more than capable people here who able to maintain it on the road???? Those things were locally manufactured in Surabaya and to hear them saying "we're sending it back home" really facepalming myself
@@likeitraf its all about money mate. you don't need to own one as long you share same passion
Glad to here he still plans to run it.
Yes. As said. I'll drop by again to push him to get it going.
Well, it's interesting for sure, I just hope it will not be another 10 years before it's finished again.
Haha I really had a suspicion "Could it be came from Indonesia?" And then you confirmed it!! 😂
Great to see an Holden in Japan. Thanks for sharing, you should buy that. How 😎 cool.
My grandfather had 2 EKs, my father had 2 FBs. I remember a neighbour that rebuilt many of them for selling.
Awesome!
Thank you, Daniel, for sharing your video with us.
Hey Daniel what about the Honda mini bike behind it
But that is amazing find and in Japan of all places
Let’s hope he gets it going again but it would be so nice to see it painted properly
Buy it Daniel!!! How cool would it be for you and the family to drive around in Japan in a fully restored Holden if that era.
Do Japanese people like driving cars with patina? If so, that car has great patina 👍
Well done Koutaro for driving that beauty for 10 years!
I hope he gets it back on the road soon.
Looks like a 3/4 scale 57 chevy.
Pretty much
Beautiful car 🥰
Question is do you prefer Holden or Ford? 🤔
cool :). is that rear rim out of some old mitsubishi from the 80s, redrilled to fit? looks kinda familiar haha
Sorry, I'm not sure of which car it came from
Could be,as it was indonesian hahaha,we fit anything to keep it alive
@@demasrheza6609 nice haha
This is my favorite generation of Holden by far!!
Wow
Pretty much. Thanks for watching, Jim :)
a baby '57.
Yeah, and the prior shaped Holden definitely took some styling cues from the '55
Another great video Dan, you're a real pro...anyone else would have forgotten those emus....
Hahahahaha! Thanks
what a find Dan.....
Was that a pic of a vk commodore
(I forget what I put in the vid...) A green VK Calais? I got it digitally rendered. Cool as
@@wasabicars my dad has got a vk commodore in brown witch had the i6 EFI still going to this day now it is on club plates and is a ralitivly original car and belonged to my dead great uncle he bought it new also it is surprising how many holdens u have found in Japan never thought there would be so many also I think u are one of very few channels that reply’s to most if not all the comments and I respect u for that it is a big job replying to so many comments
@@AydanD69 Cool that the family VK is still going strong. Love that. Thank you. Yeah, plenty of comments ;-)
What a wonderful car! I love that red interior!
Thanks, Josh. This one being an Aussie car, is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. Still, though not a Japanese car, the vibe is 'Sabi for sure :)
going the mad max route. ain't a bad idea
In this case, it just makes sense.
