      The only suggestion I would make is if you want to replace an exact cross, wait for a year or two after your original purchase to make sure you won't be getting any plants from the same gene line. All flasks of a cross don't always end up with one grower, they can be spread globally. So by waiting a few years, the plant you buy would be mostly likely from a new crossing and a new set of flasks.

      Hi Danny. Always love listening to your talks. You have the charm of seeming to be talking directly into our ears by a terrific story teller. Though even by your standard is a long one. More to enjoy. Think might have a problem buying three from same seller if they might have problem orchids being it diseased or stressed in the sellers care or perhaps defective genes. Think you had a seller with problematic plants with the dreaded "f" . Perhaps purchasing same species from different sellers from different locations at different times, maybe a year apart. I did with the Parishii one south of me growth in a hot environment and another a bit north of me in a cooler area. Needless to say the little guy closer to me is doing better. Anyways my thought.

    I love your videos. I like this advice about not deciding based on one individual orchid. So true. My first and only orchid was a disaster and for years I thought I couldn't grow orchids. Now I have a new one and thanks to your videos all is going well and I have more confidence. Thank you! Your videos are wonderful and pretty addicting. 😊

    Hi Danny, Don't be afraid to make long videos, you have a lot of interesting matter to share with youtubers ! Regarding seedlings : in the past, I never was successful with adult vandas, I was a serial killer with them. About 3 years ago I bought 5 vanda seedlings, they are all doing great now, and one them has a spike, the buds will open very soon !!! Did the seedlings adapt to my greenhouse better than the adults ??? About trying new orchid species : I agree with you on trying with several orchids of the same species at the same time. Otherwise you dont't know what's going wrong if something goes wrong. About sarcochilus : Akerne orchids (a belgian nursery) has a good choice, more than 20 different sarcochilus hybrids. The first 4 sarcochilus (bought 2 years ago) gave good results, I will certainly add some to my collection.

    Your paraphal looks very impressive! I had one whick I lost to rot. Having seedlings are together rewarding and frustrating and require lots of patient, but if they survive and even bloom, it's wonderful to their development. Thanks for sharing.

    Thanks for the update about the Paraphalaenopsis, Danny! I hope mine will be as happy as yours soon. Mine went to mount, but I didn't let the roots bare, I "potted" it around the bark surrounded by sphagnum moss, keeping the aerial roots also free to decide if they want to grow back into the medium or just attach. But it's hanging upside down, since it's close to the humidifier and I want to make sure there will be no crown damage... fingers crossed... here in my place, the mounted plants are doing well, sometimes they become better than when they were potted, so I follow the tips they are giving to me... I will share the experience later! Have a great weekend!

    Hello Danni, you are great! I did have this problem with one of my favs....the miltoniopsis. What I realized, also after listening to you and Roger, was that the stores usually sell them with only one or 2 fans and it's almost impossible to keep it alive after the blooms die off. Now, thanks to you and Ana Maria from Miracle Orchids inspiring me, I'm going to try leca. I think I'll start with my phals (I have about 15) since they are most forgiving. I'm a bit reluctant to change over my oncidiums types because they are doing so well as they are. They have new growths which are sprouting new roots and I know that's the best time to repot them but I'm not sure how they'll do in leca here in northern Italy. Do you have any tips or suggestions for me?

  • @emilydewsnap
    @emilydewsnap 6 лет назад

    Such good points! I had the worst experience with Phals and was convinced I couldn’t grow them for awhile. But I kept trying. First time, the bark I bought to repot had mold and killed the orchid. Second time, the orchid refused to grow roots for an entire year even after I tried seaweed fertilizer and increasing humidity, keeping it stable, and then it suddenly just died. Totally depends on the plant and so many factors, not just our care. But can definitely make us question if we have brown thumbs lol.

    Hi Danni, if you still keep your Cymbidiums could you please make an update how they are doing? I have two of them. I love these long green leaves.
    Many thanks!

    MISS ORCHID GIRL !! 🤞
    I have a question that I hope you can help.. Backstory: I got my first orchid for mother's day this year. It wasn't until I watched a ton of your videos that I needed to change the media. Well, I realized that all the roots were dead and molded. The top leaf fell off...it was bad. I followed your directions to use peroxide, I cut off the dead, moldy roots(which was all of them) and I think that was the only thing that saved it. It's been 2 months and I still have nothing but a stump (no roots) and 3 leaves. (Had 4, top one fell off). Well I checked on my orchid this morning and a new leaf is growing out along with pushing out the leftover leaf from the old leaf that fell off. I'm happy to see a leaf growing but there's still no roots! I'd feel better if I had one root at least lol so my question is, How do I encourage roots? I'm at a loss, this is my very first orchid out of the 20 I have now lol I can't lose her 😥

    Hi, Danni. Great vids! I grow orchids (phals, mostly species) in semi-hydro because of you, but I also have some new purchases (schwerter ofc) that I'll keep in bark untill spring comes. I live in Romania, so they were lost in transport and I dont want to shock them anymore.
    The question is: since the new ones in bark are in a pot + pot cover system, that seals almost perfectly, like the ones you used for DIY wick pots, does that keep extra moisture in the bark?
    I'm new to growing in bark. After 8 days with high humidity outside, there still is condensation in the pots. Should i get the pots out of the pot covers?
    Keep up the good work!

    Hi Danny, this video answered some of my worries and reservation regarding getting new varieties of orchids. This is because of my bad experience with Cattleya.
    One question: I got a new Cattleya (young min orange golden satisfaction😍) today. It has 3 old and 1 new stems. The new stem has a sheath with a bud underneath. But all the roots are dead. Could I expect the bud to grow and flower for me????

    My mottle leaf paphs like a mix of bark and NZ sphagnum moss. All of one or the other, they did not care for. They also like the least light of the bunch. Seem to be doing okay. So far, so good. Waiting for blooms. Yes, we all sometimes get a dud and do our best to help it, not always successful. Yes, I will try again if at a good price.

    Hi Danny
    In one of your videos you bought some orchid from eBay, you said you are very please with the orchid and the price, the video was about Paphiopedilum, l cannot find the videos, I am only a beginner, so funds are limited, can you give me the name of the sellers, l bought a lot seedlings orchid from Malaya, because they were cheap, they were all dead, and I was very disappointed, l sent photos of the orchid to the sellers, she did her best and sent replacement, they were dying or dead, I gave up in the end, and put it down to experience, your videos have taught me so much, I am so grateful, for the information, The big problem is when you talk about different orchid, I want one!

    Hey Danny, I have a Phal. Princess Kaiulani (violacea x amboinensis) that isn't doing so great. It had 5 leaves when I bought it and now it only has 2 and it lost all of its roots except for one root and one aerial root. I potted it in self watering and I'm just hoping it'll bounce back. As you said it may be the problem with the individual because all my other orchids are doing great here in Malaysia. Should I leave it be in self watering or switch it to sphagnum moss?

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  6 лет назад

      Try moss if she seems more finicky, I think I have a Kaiulani... Lol haha not sure :p if I do she does ok in leca for me, maybe it's the individual.

    Hi Danny, which slow release fertilizer did you use for your catasetum?

  • @bonniesuekimball7550
    @bonniesuekimball7550 6 лет назад

    One more thing, I noticed that some of your pots in self watering are your old pots with the drilled holes and some are not, do you notice any difference on how well the leca stays wet? Even with the outer pot it seems like the holey pots would dry out faster.

    Hi Danni. I have a question for you. I live in Florida and I just got my first orchids. I got a ** Oriental Smile fantasy** A dendrobium nobile and I would like to know if I can just live it outside or I should put it indoors?

      Now soon the nobiles will be going dormant so if you have freeze, just bring them in. If not then a dappled light area would be good . Just look out for buds around february or march. 😙

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  6 лет назад

      Hi, I cannot tell without too many details, maybe stem rot, or root rot that advanced towards the stem. I am not a fan of water culture so I cannot advise you in this setup, I preffer more air and ventilation and resort to a thin moss bed with recovering orchids.
