- In this video I react to the song Engravings by Ethan Bortnick. I hadn't heard of Ethan Bortnick before this video but I had unknowingly seen some of his TikTok videos. Ethan is a pianist and has had a lot of recognition as a great pianist as a child and now he writes his own music such as this song.

He's going to get a lot kids interested in learning the piano, that's probably the best thing about his music. So cool.
I can confirm
I mean, piano has always been the most popular instrument.

as a victim to an asian household, those poor kids...
Turning moonlight sonata into a modern beat that smacks is pretty cool
The more I listen to both, the more they remind me of each other:
"Engravings"
"Moonlight Sonata 3rd Movement"
Because they go Left to right both simply. But very simply.
Hello there this young man Ethan Bortnick was a 12-year-old piano prodigy who also composes and sings.
He has had over 4 national television concert specials.
At 9 he was listed in the Guinness World Records for "The World's Youngest Solo Musician to Headline His Own Concert Tour.
I remember watching him on TV when he was younger.
But it was nice to cone across him again all these years later as a wonderful musical artist.
I loved watching a video he put out some time ago, where he wanted out of that lime-light to reinvent himself as an artist. He knew he basically had the world in his hands from a young age, but sought out to try and make his fame fresh, instead of relying on his prodigy status as a young child. It's quite amazing, and he's killing it.
Yo I'm even bigger fan now
Passo de duas linhas eu nem leio
"prodigy" bro his music sounds like shit, i like the piano at start but the rest sounds like garbage
@@aspicio alright, you become well known for you piano skills, and play concerts at such a young age, then come back and say he's bad.
I just discovered this kid and been down the rabbit hole since. Nice assessment!
Thank you, I still need to listen to some of his other songs…but I like his sound 😊
@@matticawood you should do a cover of Arsonists. One of my favorites
@@matticawood I can’t seem to find other pianist opinion on his skill level, his body language and way of playing seems to give off the impression as if he is the greatest piano player on earth but I can’t definitively come to a conclusion on how good he is compared to world champion piano players. It seems like he is trying to kill the piano, in a way to finally rid him of the one thing that is consuming every aspect of his life so that he can finally escape and transcend reality.
God I love the smashing keys part, never thought a pianist would make a song I like so much
😃😃😃❤❤❤👍👍👍👍same👍👍👍👍
Thanks for reviewing this. One thing to note with his arpeggiating is that it is very staccato and certain keys, notes, chords are emphasized to give the piano playing more emotion. Such a powerfully emotional piece. So proud of Ethan. Glad he made his own unique sound since he was a prodigy pianist playing classical and other music. His bio story is great to listen to.
Thank you. I agree. He is one of the few people that approaches Prince in talent. He is still young. I am wanting more of Ethan’s music. I cannot even imagine what is yet to come from him!
What I always liked about the music video is that the lady in it is wearing a crocheted/knitted dress. Makes me think that she's "literally" made out of the problems that entangled him.
I’m saying this but this dude is going to be famous like big famous mark my words big famous (ps that’s a lot of famous)
As always! You are too kind 😊
He's already famous 🤣
Bru I don't watch TV or have tick tok and now I'm hearing of this guy
@@baals_bestie8074 no like bigger famous like pewdiepie
@@goodboychrismas3263 you know how much money this dude's raised in his childhood for charity right?
You pulled the word right out my mouth. His music is just so refreshing. Too much of todays music is just tryna fit in and fit the criteria and get top hits.
Thank you for doing this video. I am in no way a musician but something was eating at me when a lot of people would bash him saying he was faking the piano playing. Again something irritated me about that like I just knew he was actually playing. Watching you go over it and play the note yourself really drives home how there are many ways to produce music and layer it after the fact to produce something truly amazing... again thank you for showing him some support I love his music and have watched that music video probably over 100 times.
Okay not only is Ethan breathtaking but THIS MAN JUST PLAYED IT LIKE THAT?! I'M SO JEALOUS I WANT TO CRY! WHAT WOULD IT TAKE FOR ME TO GET TO THIS LEVELLLLLLLL (I'll gladly take suggestions (: )
Is working with chords and memorizing them a good step?
@@toriwhitney2830 For arpeggios, yeah.
Practice. Lots and lots of practice. Just keep working. It will take a long time and will be frustrating, and quite honestly, many people are never happy with playing and will always have something to improve, but the work will pay off
He has been playing piano since he was 3. He's a prodigy with perfect pitch.
What he played is actually pretty simple and I'm not great at piano. People acting like this song is insanely difficult and creative is just making me realise how little the average human knows about music. Pretty crazy. this song is litterally just arpeggios
The incorporation of the bashing of keys is something I don’t know if I’ve seen before. The visual really threw me off when I saw it first. Ethan is extremely gifted musically but also understands the necessity of integrating visuals entertainment to grab his audience.
Same. It's something Andre Rieu might arrange like he did for the performance of Feuerfest by Josef Strauss, but this is obviously a darker/dramatic context.
He does smash his piano when playing the song in his shorts, tiktok
Can you please explain why you consider him musically gifted? I see almost no gift at all beyond some good showmanship
@@JohnYoo39Rieu is a fraud
@@paranoidlawyer hes a child pianist prodigy who reinvented his entire identity and STILL became famous again writing incredibly well written music
Hearing an experienced pianist discuss the technique of another experienced pianist in such a simple and comprehensible way as if it is really that easy really threw me for a loop 😂
Bro is a hater
Speaking of Polyphia, their song “Playing God” is pretty amazing. Definitely give it a listen if you haven’t already.
Check out my latest video…that’s about Playing God 😊
@@matticawood sounds great, I’ll go ahead and do that right now!
Thank you for letting me know he raised so much for charity... Young man earned even more respect from me
I'm getting on a bit, have seen a few musicians in my time. Ethan is so refreshing, I bloomin' love him, and all his recent tracks.
He learned how to play engravings in 1:23 seconds like just wow
I did the same. Its a beautiful song but it sounds a lot harder than it actually is
It’s very easy and intuitive both chordally and technically
Ethan could be the next like Beethoven. His creativity with the piano is unmatched in recent times as far as I can tell.
No, there's a couple. Amy Lee, for example. There's also others out there. The problem is people limit music to single categories. For example, you are probably only saying that because he is the first real exposure to something other than hip hop/rap. Ironically, that is the same source of exposure.
Hahaha no
@@martinosimionato1536 yes!!!
Lmao this song is so insanely simple just arpeggios. If you know nothing about music just say that
@@brawln9550 having the right simplicity is what matches the taste of most people and I dont mean it in a negative way.
Its always about your audience. Matthew said it well, the many not so complex parts sound refreshing.
Love your analysis of it! Just discovered this song a few hours ago and am totally hooked!!! Immediately it was clear this was not average piano player.
Oh yes, I like him a lot, not only really nice piano skills but nice authoral songs, he released another one just the other day
I appreciate that you didn't have a big issue with the key bashing. A lot of people in the comments of his video (not the top ones but whenever you sort by most recent) are acting like it is the greatest sin.
This kid is incredible. Nice reaction and promotion of creativity! You’re a great coach.
Big fan of this song! Love the bashing of the keys!✌️😎
Is it just me or this song sounds a lot like Moonlight Sonata? Nice reaction video, btw. You earned a sub!
It is same exact song. It's basically a remix parts are missing or put in place that shouldn't be. Still sounds good. There's a slow version that sounds amazing.
i think it is more like “bad guy” from billie eilish
@@翠-m9m ...
Sounds like the 3rd Movement but darker
@@c.shoresfishing the chord structure is very different its inspired but definitely not the same song
Thanks For Breaking It Down Matt I Love The Piano It’s Very Relaxing ❤
Actually discovered Ethan through your Short form this video, which lead the algirythm to push a ton of his omegle shorts. Thank you for that!
Real effect of this performance does not need any analytical comments. It's just awesome!!!
TikTok brought me to Ethan Bortnick’s, then Ethan Bortnick’s brought me here. I like how you allow the song to play out only really reacting when you have something to add. A lot of "reaction" videos are way to self centered and feel the need to make sure they get as much screen time as possible, you seem to just want to point out cool things, which you manage to do! So yeah, great video.
Great video, I was impressed when you started to play the start of the song. Sounds very difficult.
Its not
Yeah it may seems difficult but in reality it's pretty easy
its easier than it sounds, most competent pianist can probably sight read that effortlessly
I love this video and music
I love your voice so much even tho I dunno what all the music stuff means yet.
I am in the middle of trying to learn piano right now so wish me luck!!!
you should react to cut my fingers right of by ethan bortonik
Il check it out! 😊
Its Cut My Fingers Off, but ok, its still good request
I genuinely enjoy this. Thank you!
He is a genius! He is Crazy has a looooot of energy! And the piano is so minimalist and perfect!!!!!
I like how the youtube timeline is perfectly in line with the bottom of your keys. :D
propapbly one of the best reaction videos I've ever seen. I love how you strip the piano of the song to it's basic methods.
I just came upon this young man also today via "shorts" I am impressed and now want to hear more. I wonder how many pianos he ruins. Just a thought......Thanks loved your reaction....
middle aged metal head and this song makes me want to learn piano so bad
When i heard this sound, it felt like something i'd expect of a younger Matthew Bellamy from Muse. Great stuff
Easily the best channel I ran into this year
I'm so happy to see the younger generation given me great new musical vibes.
If I had heard or been introduced to more musicians like Ethan Bortnick. Who could have shown me piano can be emotional instead of rigided. Would have stayed with piano.
I subbed from the time when u did rush e epic
A lot of people only react to Engravings without every knowing the "cut my fingers off " is also really cool
I'm amazed you didn't mention that the sound of the pedals was sampled to make the crunch noises in the song.
It's Mozart reincarnated level genius.
Listen for the quick crunch, it's just a piano pedal doing its thing: 3:54
A guy using a pedal sound in a song that uses basic arpeggios. That's Mozart level genius? No helping you
@@Almighty_1 Varying levels of appreciation for varying levels of insight.
Other than that I can't help you either.
@@Almighty_1 i mean even if the paino playing in this song isnt the most expressive out there, there is no denying that ethan is a genius u gotta remembere hs like 23, he was already touring at the age of 9 , hes just trying something else rn , he does still release more classical pieces without singing but hes trying his own thing wwith this
@@gamingyoshi2280 Of course he's a musical genius. He was and still is a prodigy. Comparing him to Mozart just seems extreme, especially for something as simple as sampling random noises, which is something that a lot of musicians and producers do
Cool explanation. Easy going. Like the vibe. Boom 💥
Ethan is PHENOMENAL
You should also check out his other song I cut my fingers off it's also really good 👌
One of ‘em early people 💪✨Also nice video!
Thanks! 😊
Considering the achievements he achieved Guinness World Records for "The World's Youngest Solo Musician at the age of 9 with 50 million dollar charity , 1000 concerts and living only with his music, no need for any explanation, all he need is just music and support
I don't know if this is "pop" music, but I know that I'm 101 years old, and he makes me go totally ape. This is the most EXCITING music since Bach's Notenbuchlein and progrockers Muse!
If you look at this song and Nightmare Before Christmas Jack's Lament, the Chorus follows similar high points. This song always reminded me of it.
Mat-is the legend

65 years, just found Ethan on tik tok…… love! I’d pay to see him!

This is great talent and lots of experience (from your side), loved the style of the review, keep it up.
I fell in love with this. My girlfriend plays Piano and she loves it too. Now I play guitar so I understand the Chord progression and I am trying to learn Piano as a guitarist and I love how it meshes so well. It translates over nicely.
By the way, this song is for the creator’s toxic ex from quarantine so smashing the keys is resembling how much he hates her.
I wanna listen to more like that
At 1:45, they're called Cluster Chords, and they do add dissonance. Carlo Gesualdo was a pioneer in popularizing musical tension, mostly with vocals. He showed the world that music can make you feel pain just as well, and some say his audience members were forever cursed to violence and misery. He and his mistress also framed his wife to avoid adultery charges, for which the wife was executed. It makes you wonder about what you hear on the radio nowadays. Pretty cool, huh?
He sounds like muse like the band
He does! I can definitely hear that 😊
He gifted with something called "perfect pitch". Which is why he's such a child savant pianist.
i dont have perfect pitch, but i can certainly tell you that it might be rare among normal people, its extremely common in the field of music.
it is indeed not common @@schewts you're talking about relative pitch. You have to born with perfect pitch
@@LearningMyAbcsPiano no, most people who have developed perfect pitch are those who gets in contact with music at a very young age. While pretty much 99% of people can learn relative pitch, only just a few have perfect pitch. But once you focus only on musicians, 100% of musicians have relative pitch, and perfect pitch isn't as rare as you might think
@@schewts perfect pitch is rare in the field of music but those who have it often become more successful than those who don't. i was wrong about being born with it but it is still out of your control whether you get perfect pitch or not
@@LearningMyAbcsPiano fair enough, but there are definitely those that are very successful despite not having perfect pitch though

Ethan started playing on his own at the age of six, he's a prodigy.
3* he started at 3
There was a really old anime called Nodame Cantabile about piano and I loved the intro song. The videoclip for the song is also great, would love to see your reaction to it.
Song: Suemitsu & The suemith - Allegro Cantabile
Would love to see a mash up with like pumpkin king from nightmare before Christmas with this

Definitely layering
I am quite sure he bashes the keys in a specific key which makes it work a lot better - can you confirm that?
That is very observant of you! I wonder!?
At first (in the video) it's seems like he's a victim or puppet - ordered, "PLAY THAT PIANO FOR ME!" By a Tempest...
But later it seems it's Him wanting to Break Away from her Possessing Him & Him Falling For Her Crap & Escape Through His Piano Playing...
I know I need that escape every now & then, so I go straight for my piano &/or music (singing favorite songs at the top of my lungs - my poor neighbors, lol). This is my take on this video ~
Take-it-and-weeeep❣
What am I doing here at 3 am?
No joke but you really deserve 10+million subs
Gosh damn I didn't know I wanted to hear a soft version too O.O
5:29 - 5:32 this dude bashed the piano and they edited it to where its looks like he just pushed that sucker back in and kept playing! was such a powerful scene to me.
I love this song.

1/7/23. today is the day I found you. Now I can't get you out of my head.
So, these last couple of years, I've been kinda interested in the piano, and I was kinda wondering if any of you have known anyone to start late and or tips if it's common or uncommon where to start things like that.
No way he’s playing the piano like that while slamming on the piano in the beginning
WOW
He is awesome 👍 I'd say today's bad ass Beethoven ......
He's like, "yeah, he's pretty good... So anyway there's this other band ... "
Wow.

This song is literally kill the noise, with nightmare b4 Christmas, with a little bit of muse, listen to kill the noise and tell me this isn’t the exact same riff, and in nightmare b4 Christmas when sally jumps from the tower that song that plays, and of course the muse!
