Brazil djented before it was cool.
jeff is clearly the focus of the video
U already kno
He nam jef
Jeff is all I hear...
NickTheSickDick . Mah name iz jeeff
Rob! you needed to tie the coconut on to the string and then it would't loose the tone so much. also you can "tune it" with the string of the coconut... basically.... Its pretty common in Brazil to mix metal with a berimbau sound but u made it totally different!
Search for: Soulfly, Ostheobaldo, Catapulta (other brazilian 90's metal-ish bands)
I LOVE IT hahaha
HAhahahaha
Marcelo Sanchez Grisanti I want to see rob do a cover of sepultura's attitude using the berimbau
Dude! We can't forget to mention that Mark Dacascos movie "Only The Strong" (Esporte Sangrento, in portuguese)!
"Onde tem marimbondo, ô-lelê! Onde tem marimbondo, ô-lalá!
"Paranauê! Paranauê, paraná!"
Just kiddin'. It's not so great... =D
Glad to see someone shouting out real berinmbau shit!
Actually it's a calabash, not a coconut! Salute.
it's funny seeing you guys discovering the berimbau, because here in some parts of Brazil, and probably in some countries in Africa, it is common and it's used to set the pace of Capoeira, a mix of fight and dance.
Gabriel Dalto 500 other people already said that /.-
ShadowOfDeath24 so why bitch at this dude about it?
Quite right. It's design s actually how it was originally in Africa. This is it being played in a more traditional African way.

Rob, you should check out Sepultura songs, they used the Birimbao in some of their songs, and they do thrash metal, they are from Brazil.
up
up
If I recall correctly, most prominently they use the Berimbau propper in Attitude (and even use it live) and the shaker in Ratamahatta.
bem lembrado!!
enlightendbel Exactly, Attitude and also Ratamahatta, I didn't remember of Ratamahatta. Thanks!
Where are you from?
Make a metal song using Jeff. Jeff Metal.
Instrumento da "Capoeira" do Brasil! Instrument of the "Capoeira" of Brazil!
If anyone wants it in english: It's an old Brazilian instrument, if you want to see it used, search for "Capoeira".
I'm pretty sure it could be understood based on similarity of the words, but since someone already bitched about it, there it is the translation :p
Æinarr Krigsson I love that three people were like "yeah, this guy's got a point."
Na verdade o instrumento é da Africa. Actually this instrument is from Afica, here in Brazil we have a pretty deep African cultural influence
Fuck
You have to learn to respect the first languages of the people. "clown"
Its an African (originally) instrument used on Capoeira in Brazil (a fight/dance style or something)
Its part of our culture
Pretty much xddddd
New game: where is jeff?
You must be Chicago Music Stores favorite customer because you're buying all these unorthodox instruments
Berimbauuuuu.. Drop tuning!
That is why in the song, the berimbau doesn't sound like how I used to hear it haha XD
Man, berimbau without the rock and caxixi is just a string hold in a stick
It is just a bow
@@balintspiak4507 berimbow?
look for Attitude by Sepultura. The instrument in the intro is the Berimbau
you tried to write berimbau metal with The Rock?! oh... I thought you meant... never mind lol
working with these odd instruments and seeing how you find ways to create different sounds is absolutely entrancing
that's a strange guitar.
Its a fender berimbaucaster
That's a strange BASS
No ducks. Disappointment.
What did you think Jeff was, human?
Dan Sutherland a
the berimbau is one of the first stringed instruments EVER!. the instrument is used in the martial art "Capoeira" i think it's really cool that you made metal out of an afrobrazilian instrument wich is really old.
love your vids. keep up the good work :)
The greatest headbanging display ever!!!! Yes! Love your channel.
Funny you got this from a guy named Max and metal heads know this instrument best from Max Cavelera era Sepultura. ROOTS!!
You put 2 chairs that won’t move away from each other and place the berimbau on top and push down. Push so it flexes down. Then pull your string tight and wrap it. Helps a lot with another person wrapping. With it tuned if you slide the gourd all the way down get decent low
You need to check out Soulfly. Max uses one on the intro to "Tribe". It's a Brazilian tribal instrument, that may have originated in Africa, and brought to Brazil in the early 16th century during the slave trade.
I think Jeff may have taken a little PCP sometime before this video was made.
On another note, its very nice to see you exploring different instruments instead of just insulting half of the world like some other youtube musicians that we all know. I truly enjoy your experiments.
People, this instrument is called Birimbao and it's used in Brazilian music and in the dance and martial art Capoeira.
The berimbau (Portuguese pronunciation: [beɾĩˈbaw]) is a single-string percussion instrument, a musical bow, from Brazil. Originally from Africa where it receives different names, the berimbau was eventually incorporated into the practice of the Afro-Brazilian martial art capoeira
Jeff seems like a cool guy
Playing with the rock is a lot harder, you have to support and balance the berimbau across one pinky finger using the string which keeps tension on the cord. After about 5 minutes of playing it, if you haven't been playing all your life, you'll get "berimbau pinky." AKA a sore ass finger. It's literally the hardest part of the instrument: holding it.
Rob: makes a video about the Berimbau
Capoeira: Finally... my time has come
When I was like 8 years old I used to go to capoeira classes where we kids would play these brazilian instruments as well as the berimbau :D this video brings back very distant memories
Sooo next up is dry wall metal?
i`m capoeirista and i press like button!!!.. good job Rob nice video
the berimbau is (I think) a really old instrument from Brazil, and is mostly used for the sport ''Capoeira''. which originated from the Brazillian prisons. my brother knows a lot more about this instrument and the sport as he was a teacher for it
"you got a splinter? oh i'm sorry" rob is just the nicest guy ever
In Brazil we use the Berimbau as base instrument for songs to "dance" capoeira. But it works for metal too lol
The rock is kinda tricky, but wrapping the gourd around the string gives it enough tension where you can use the rock on it.
Rob, you really should check out some of Naná Vasconcelo's music. The guy is a true máster of the Berimbau.
Also, Sepultura and Soulfly, in which Max Cavalera used it in a Metal context.
The berimbau is a Brazilian instrument used in a fight / dance called capoeira
DUDE I am so happy that I'm not the only person who presses their guitar up to the wall to hear it resonate!
I saw this guy with a didgeridoo doing what sounded a lot like dubstep. He was really great with it. Now I can't find the video anymore. :'(
So Jeff was the mythical creature rob was summoning using his ritual stick
Hey Rob what instrument can you play? "Yes"
I liked the track but I'm really disappointed you didn't research or present any of the history of the berimbau. I'm all for experimenting with obscure gear and breaking tradition, but it's important to at least try to respect the culture things come from -- it gives you a better appreciation of the instrument and its music.
The berimbau comes from Brazil by way of African slaves who were not allowed to own musical instruments. So the slaves built instruments like the berimbau from sticks, rocks, wires and gourds, stuff they could find (and hide) easily. Side note: the cajon has a similar origin (it's a box) with African slaves in Peru. Instruments similar to the berimbau are found in parts of Africa and India as well.
If you start learning guitar you're not going to research how it was made and/or its history - if it has an interesting backstory, he wouldn't know so he wouldn't care to research it. No offense intended, thanks for sharing the story.
That is exactly what you do when you learn the guitar lol. You learn the history of the guitar, effects, theory, etc. most importantly, you learn music written for the guitar! @_@
Quite right. It's design s actually how it was originally in Africa. This is it being played in a more traditional African way.

If you go to a capoeira group they will teach you how to set it up right. I'm a beginner in capoeira myself so I don't know a ton but I know that those loops should be closer together, so that you can twist them around all at once in one handful.
Jeff is the overlord of everything
You should drill a hole for a traditional guitar string, the bolt a tuner key to it and make it tunable
ooooh that snickers ad *hiss* its skimming the edge bruh.
how about if you were to make a modern Berimbau with a machine head and such?
If anybody saw Atoms For Peace live, this is what Mauro Refosco uses on "The Clock". ;)
The Berimbau comes from Capoeira, the Brazilian fight/dance. I'm Brazilian, so trust me. Search for capoeira and I'll find out a lot about the instrument
Territory on berimbau, cheers from Brazil.
Hey Rob,
build one yourself, with a tuner on top so it stays in tune.
Grtz
Peter
Sounds like the music before you leave the safe room on L4D1
Right at the end of the video, there's someone coming to get Rob.
i'd love to see a video where you did it higher like it was supposed to be played
I believe you ARE supposed to bend it. That's how you get more tention in it. The stick is plyable enough to you can bend it and get the string taut that way.
Hi Rob! Have a nice day Rob!
And everyone else!
:)))
You rock it Rob and I should confirm that the berimbau is a percussion instrument and represent that the war can become into music and peace so it was a bow and the rock was the arrow
3:40 Insert Seinfeld Theme
show more of it like it is supposed to be set up please. Never seen this
Jeff is my spirit animal
It’s rad you added the berimbau! Your arame is def tuned low even for gunga, but it sounds Sick!!
i just fucking love jeff in the back haha
"Friend" Jeff. Don't worry Rob, we won't judge.
The name of your instrument in the hand with the stick is called-kashichi
This took me back to my Sepultura days!
It was created by slaves in Brazil. The reason it looks so exotic is it was meant to be a disguise for a bow, the stick was used because it was an arrow. It’s traditionally used in capoeira, a martial art also developed by Brazilian slaves:
Roots!!! Bloody Roots!!!
It was fun what you could play out of that thing hahahaha...
But the pitch and tone can fuck up if the wood isn't right and well bent. We usually carve a piece of wood to a stick as it is done for bows as you guys pointed out. For the rock try and find a pebble stone, the surface that touches the string needs to be as cleaner as possible in order to work properly. And also, the gourd isn't loose. I hope you can find a better instrument and try this again.
Cheers!
Rob I have one word for you, Sepultura!!!!! they used a berimbau and an electric one for their heavy metal songs
I'm very late, but you are supposed to bend it a little in a bow-like shape to get tension. Since its kinda stiff, a little bit of bend will get you a lot of tension.
I still really like listening to dubstep
I'm wearing the same shirt, so that's neat.
So this instrument is the same instrument Max Cavalera uses in some of his songs in his band SoulFly, right?
I think you'd have a lot of fun with the jaw harp, you should check it out if you haven already
This + didgeridoo + those african drums that can bend the pitch =acoustic EDM
This makes me wonder what it'd sound like if you took, say, a digeridoo, and strung the thing up to utilize the entire tube as your resonance chamber. Or something like one of those alpine horns might work better?
Check the old Videos from "Roots" by Sepultura, they did awesome Berimbau metal almost 20 years ago.
The "rock" is called a "Dobrao,"
Edit: The shaker is also called a "Caxixi," and the stick for playing it is called a "Baqueta"
I was focusing on Jeff the whole entire time
I recommend you look at youtube tutorials to play touches of capoeira:
- paranaue
- sul da bahia
- toque da luna
- toque de benguela
- toque de angola
- apala naranja
- saobento grande
First time I heard a berimbau in metal was in "Attitude" by Sepultura. \m/
Speaking of highly resonant instruments, when are you going to get an ES-335? Most versatile guitar ever!
Max Cavalera uses this in a lot of Soulfys older material.
ask someone to modify this or make a brand new berimbau. something that can really make it into a metal song
Hi Rob, I believe this is used in 'the Werewolf' by Paul Simon :)
BERIMBAU JAM PLS!
You should totally check out sepultura. (If u already havent) Love from brazil
iv also always done the sheetrock thing it works better with the breadstick. but if you have no amp...
Idea: Put a locking tuner on it.
sweet
Jeff is a cool guy
Check out Afro Left by Leftfield, features the berimbau
throwback to sepultura's attitude
this guy is ridiculous. its so goid
So you are saying that they played dubstep in the Stoneage :O holy cow
Juuuuust play it yooo
You should put a guitar tuning-key on the end, to tune it properly
the rock is probably at another fast and furious movie
Can only imagine Fluff's reaction when he received these tracks 😂
"STICK" with the "WOODS" XDD
