"The thing about folk music is it's not static" - this video made a folk nerd even happier than I expected. That statement is important and so easy to forget.
I find it impossible to forget, myself. I've internalized it. My performance version of Health To The Company borrows from at least half a dozen sources & is unique to me as far as I know.
My cat loves your song, which is the highest praise I can offer. She came across the room, rubbed against my phone, and settled down to listen. I think you’re music is beautiful, but it is also kitty-approved! 💛
Your voice is amazing! Have you ever heard of an Irish song the ballad of William Rilley? It would be awesome if you could cover that, or Molly Malone. Haha sorry I will shut up now😁
As a Celtic musician, fiddle, guitar, flute, whistle, vocals, I think it's an AWESOME rendition! Trust me...I've heard this 100s of times...🤣 Highland Game, after Game, after game, after game... Very 😍 beautiful
I am a Japanese girl who now lives in Scotland. I am engaged to a girl who originally comes from the Isle of Skye (well the Isle of Søay just off the Skye coastline). My girlfriend was all ready to hate this version as this song is close to the heart of most Skye islanders, but she absolutely adores it! We are having our Covid-delayed wedding on the Isle of Skye hopefully next year and we must use this as part of the celebration!
I'm so happy for you and so happy you can call Scotland home. My Gran was from Skye and this song always reminds me of her. I hope you have a great wedding!!!
How could anyone be mad at you? If anyone asks who you are just say what I say when telling others about your channels. "She is an amazing singer, who is absolutely gorgeous in every way. Someone that no matter how much you are in pain both emotionally and physically she has the ability to make you smile and laugh. A very talented girl who deserves every one of her now 453,000 subscribers here and over 1,000,000 on Twisted Translations." On second thought maybe you shouldn't describe yourself like that, from you it could make you look conceited. But thanks for making me smile every day, even turning 29 yesterday was made better by watching you about 30 times in a row.
I've just discovered this Lady and at a loss for words. She is so talented and intelligent for one so young. I'm sure that she will go far but never forget her roots
My husband was Irish, collected Irish and Scottish music since he was 15. He passed recently, I love all his music. I'm Spanish. So doesn't matter we can all love different music. Yours is beautiful. He passed at 87.
I have just recently found your videos.watched 3-4 of them. Very pleasant, relaxing and just wanted to say that you are a great speaker. There isn't pauses or filler words trying to take up space. Maybe it's the power of editing but you're speaking makes me want to stay attentive. You're very passionate about what you do and that is vey easily seen. I'm a finish carpenter and when I get talking about my work... Well my wife has pointed out how energetic I get. I love what I do and I can tell you love what you do. You're a brave soul and generous to share it with us.
Your song's words are wonderful to me. It is the words about a sail ship talking to all and about traveling the seas and it's crew. I very much love the way you have written you lyrics to this music. Thank you so very much for it reminds me of my brother I lost two years ago. He really liked sailing and walking on the beach. As you sang your song I could see my brother looking at me again in my mind smiling as me. Thank you so very much. Steven would have loved your song for he loved folk music. I miss him.
Our conure just loves the highs! I like them all. When you are up, you fly. And when you are down, you make this old man want to cry. Sending you the grandfatherly hug you needed back then. I love your singing, and I love the look on your face when you do. The crying? I'd wipe away the tears and love the sincerity of them. All the best.
This is so beautiful. You have reimagined this so perfectly. The lyrics are evocative and I can hear the Celtic spirit. Thank you so much for doing this. Greetings from England….
I've been listening to (and loving!) your music a lot lately, and greatly enjoyed your version of The Skye Boat Song. Then... Today I found a family genealogy written by my father's father, going back an additional two generations to his father's parents, and was surprised to find that my great-great grandmother came from the Isle of Skye and my great-great grandfather came from "a smaller island north of Skye" according to my grandfather's notes. I knew that my ancestry traced back to Scotland, but not quite to where. This song has so much more meaning for me, now. Thank you for this beautiful version of it!
Firstly, this is absolutely beautiful. Secondly, I love how you took the time to explain the history behind this song and why there are different versions of it and why you made your own version. It was really interesting! (also thank you for making a lyric video because I could not decide whether it was wondered or wandered lol)
I like how you acknowledged the song as a historical tune. A lot of people only know it as the theme of Outlander. While the newer words fit the beginnings of the series, I prefer the Jacobite lyrics. Yours is good as well! Nice job!
18th June, 2015 I recorded myself whistling a tune! A tune that was embedded in my memory from origins unknown! I asked for weeks & no one knew what that tune was…you my dear have solved that riddle! Not only have you blessed me wae a beautiful interpretation of this song, you have solved a 6yr long quandary of mine! Thank you twice!

My musical tastes are very eclectic so from the first time I heard Malinda I have become a huge fan, her music evokes a sense of appreciation that she shares her voice and tells her stories.
Sometimes, not often, but sometimes something strikes a very sad note in a person and then, for some unfatomable reason, when the reverie diminishes they smile. I have found this really doesn't happen often enough so thank you.
Wow Malinda you brought this semi-old goat to tears. The lyrics are so powerful and mixed with your voice this is the best version I ever heard. Thank you
Thank you so much for this truly gorgeous piece of art! Listening to this broke something loose inside me and made me cry for several minutes. But the entire time I cried I was happy. Art is so powerful and you will never know what has the possibility of communicating with your heart and soul until you find it. So thank you Melinda for speaking to my heart!
My soul could not help but smile watching you go through the historical context & explain/perform your version of this song. Every video your raw emotion & passion show us what a truly breathtaking woman & singer you truly are inside & out. Much love & blessings to you 💚🤗🧡
I think those lyrics “All that was good....” are speaking of your own past. We all walk on through life thinking we’re the same as always, but suddenly the realisation hits us that “...All that was fair , all that was me is gone”, because that youthful part does go, it is gone, and what is left is wondering “ what the heck happened?” I know I do, I am 47, lol. Make the most of each moment.
I love to hear you sing. I often think, what would it be like to be with someone so creative The one you love is so blessed to have that connection with you and inspire you like they do and the many other songs that touch your heart and give you wings like they do ☘️
As a lover of folk music, this came to me at the right time. I look back on these past couple weeks and realize that the lass I was is gone now, and I'm struggling to figure out who I am again. Thank you very much for this story.
You must be so proud of this Malinda! Beautifully evocative, and I love your vocal ornamentation, which is so delicate and tasteful. Your musicianship and passion for music really shine through. It's a tricky choice of song because it is such a favourite for so many people (eg it's embedded in my soul from childhood), but I can't imagine you couldn't win anyone over! And thank you for the information at the start, it's really interesting.
Thank you so much, Malinda. It always brightens my day so much when you upload a video. I hope you read this. I am bedridden due to a form of MS that begins in the early teenage years. Music helps me through a lot. Your songs are so... I can't even describe it. If times are tough I know I can put my headphones on and listen to this beautiful voice and everything is only half as bad. Thank you. I know you struggle a lot yourselves, so I wanted to let you know that you really help people with what you do. PS: I have always been like: Nope, no. I won't download TikTok. No. I had only heard stupid things about it, stupid challenges, trends, etc. But it seems the app has gotten better and you have been the one to persuade me to download it.
I feel the same way about her songs. I have depression and have since age ten so several years now as I’m mid teens. To your comment about tiktok: I have not found it worth it in general except for to follow people I already follow on other platforms (like malinda) and only watch them. It makes it so easy to hear about things happening before it gets released to things like youtube. I’m rooting for you random stranger.
You are amazing, so talented, so smart and well spoken. What you just said about how folk music transcends DNA just made me less self conscious about how much I love Irish folk music even tho I am a black East African woman. I just love it
I was very moved by this rendition of the song. As someone who is reaching that weird part of my life where childhood and adulthood don't sit right, I really related to this acceptance of not knowing who we are. Thank you so much for doing what you do, it always brings feeling into my life.
Oah and what a reimagining it was...calming, beautiful, moving, in a way just like I imagine the ocean to be when it's not being wild and chaotic. I think I'd love to see more covers reimagined by you
Skye boat song was the very first song I ever learned for a choir, way (way way way) back in elementary school, and so it has a special place in my Celtic music addicted soul. This is fantastic, and does a lovely job of evoking the same feeling of being drawn into the music.
Wow how powerful your feelings of words! We all love you❤you can not ever be replaced!!!! Your an Angel 👼 blessed with a peaceful soothing beautiful voice❤❤
Your lyrics, quite literally, made me cry. Not...quite sure if it was a good cry or not...but it was simply because those lyrics spoke of something deep within me. Unexpected and amazing. Very good job. PS: put more of your covers up on spotify, darn you! xD
Amazing amazing amazing Who would have known a 600 year old song would travel so far and make a cable tv series Outlander a special show as it is The song was first written in 1672 The title was first called the Boat song Then changed to the lady boat song then in 1711 the skye boat song was sang by a 12 year old girl that had a baby and a husband in the highlands before he was forced into the British Navy So the song is really about a girl missing her love of her world her husband
This demonstrates another way that folk music is not static. Singers can use the same tune with different words to express their feelings of the current moment even if it's quite different from the original version. Thus, Greensleeves can become What Child Is This, or the song of a gentleman dying of syphilis in London can become the song of a cowboy dying of a gunshot on the streets of Laredo. Folk music is not bound to a single time, place, or set of words. This set of words is just as valid as the first set or Mr. Stevenson's set. an equally valid set of words could be used to describe the feelings of the prince as he lay dying in Paris with no hope left of achieving the great purpose that died at Culloden.
Dearest Malinda, this indeed so very beautiful, brings back very sad memories of a very beautiful lady that I loved many years ago - made my eyes wet..❄️❤️❄️
Noooo, down with the internet trolls! So cool you are putting yourself out there and expressing your truth. More folk music talk--YAAAAY. ❤️❤️❤️❤️. Very holistic and spiritually engaging ideas here. Music is life. Thank you!
I hardly ever comment, but I had to on this one. I loved the Outlander series, but always wanted to hear a longer version of the theme song. This one delivers both length and sustenance in the lyrics. Love it!
The idea that the folk music genre is so organic and changeable is both exciting and tragic to me. This means there are reams and reams of unique renditions and variations that are lost forever. OTOH, much of what is created in the tech age is now possible to record for posterity. The artists of today can listen and learn indefinitely. EDIT: BTW, screw the trolls, bunch of pissants. Do what you like, Malinda!
Folk music is the oral tradition of music. The same song can and will tell the story of each generation that sings it. There is no "right" or "best" way.
When I listen to this song, it makes me think of the urge to explore, a sence of curiousity. Actual mountains of rain and sun and sky and trees and rivers too. Instead of sad grief, it feels like something to listen to while wondering.
This is so beautiful!!! I love that you added your own words and melodies. I agree that folk music is both meant to be changed in the way that it's performed, but also wanting to honor the one who composed the music as well. Well done, Malinda!!
After you described the history, I listened to the original and Robert Louis Stevenson version. Your reimagined version really captured the essence of the song, that the person changed between the beginning of the journey to the end. The footprints on the sand perfectly describes the same concept. Excellent reimagining.
"The thing about folk music is it's not static" - this video made a folk nerd even happier than I expected. That statement is important and so easy to forget.
My favorite song by The Longest Johns speaks to this. It's called "Ashes", and you might like it too. :)
@@Kelrik_Kenning Yeah, the phrase the chorus is built around (tending the flame not worshipping the ashes" is a popular one in folk circles
I find it impossible to forget, myself. I've internalized it.
My performance version of Health To The Company borrows from at least half a dozen sources & is unique to me as far as I know.
The only thing we forget is your comments, the only thing we remember is unforgetable feeling being described as music.
Music is like Magic.
Just the tital speaks volumes pun intended, love and life to you you beautiful singer❤
Celtic music has the power to make you homesick for a place you've never been.
How did you do that, say something so perfect? This reminds of the song "Caledonia" that makes me so emotional despite having never been there!
I grew up with the Skye Boat Song and have always loved it. Now at 70 years old I've just listened to my favourite version. Thanks so much Malinda!
As a scotsman with a proud celtic heritage this version is aweinspiring gives me goosebumps absolutely love it
My cat loves your song, which is the highest praise I can offer. She came across the room, rubbed against my phone, and settled down to listen. I think you’re music is beautiful, but it is also kitty-approved! 💛
Biggest flex honestly, kitty-approved
Aww.
I bet she loved this compliment. animals sometimes get annoyed by music (cue Billie talking cat frowning at Hamilton musical)
Just when we thought 2021 was done with sailor vibes!
This slapped! Well done, mate!
Your voice is amazing! Have you ever heard of an Irish song the ballad of William Rilley? It would be awesome if you could cover that, or Molly Malone. Haha sorry I will shut up now😁
Talk about an artist beautiful inside and out. Always happy to hear a mini history lesson accompanied by gorgeous singing and writing.
Agreed. I love hearing some amazing music AND hearing some history
Folk Music is one of the earliest forms of storytelling, and the story changes depending on the singer.
As a Celtic musician, fiddle, guitar, flute, whistle, vocals, I think it's an AWESOME rendition! Trust me...I've heard this 100s of times...🤣 Highland Game, after Game, after game, after game... Very 😍 beautiful
I think that after 2 months and not a single dislike shows just how much this song speaks to people, it's adventurous and calming ❤️
As a devout Outlander fan, I have to say that you have done this song justice...I love your version...Beautiful!!!

A beautiful song AND a history lesson?!?! Yes please

Love your lyrics, especially the idea of my life (footprints) being washed away by the tide...brought me to tears....
My all time favorite female voice
was (still is) the late Olivia Newton John.
Malinda, your voice is beautiful, I love your
song the best.🦋
18th June, 2015 I recorded myself whistling a tune! A tune that was embedded in my memory from origins unknown! I asked for weeks & no one knew what that tune was…you my dear have solved that riddle! Not only have you blessed me wae a beautiful interpretation of this song, you have solved a 6yr long quandary of mine! Thank you twice!
My mother loved outlander when I introduced her to it. My father passed away in 2005 and she was never the same. The show and it's music sparked memories and intrigue. Made her cry often. She passed unexpectedly 2020. I dont watch television anymore. When I heard your voice I started crying, and I'm trying to type but cant see. Face is still leaking. I without doubt appreciate what you have done with this and agree there is no way to know exactly how old traditional songs were. We try though. I'm what would be considered a modern pagen from a very old soul. And similarly with the belief and practice there is no one way. The idea of it being so is modern. Misses the point and what it's all about. Like a sharp beam of light you tapped immediately into my soul & heart with your voice and words.
Thankyou! Most sweet and kind one.❤ From a proud, most stubborn Irish-Dane.🔥
Love the historical discussion! The reimagining is so amazing with how it gives a Malinda flavour to the song and makes it uniquely yours.
Malinda….this brilliant. I so relate to the words. Thank you. Listening for more of your work!
My musical tastes are very eclectic so from the first time I heard Malinda I have become a huge fan, her music evokes a sense of appreciation that she shares her voice and tells her stories.
Beautiful, made me cry but in a good way, thank you.
Sometimes, not often, but sometimes something strikes a very sad note in a person and then, for some unfatomable reason, when the reverie diminishes they smile.
I have found this really doesn't happen often enough so thank you.
Wow
Malinda you brought this semi-old goat to tears. The lyrics are so powerful and mixed with your voice this is the best version I ever heard.
Thank you
That was just lovely. Lovely. You have touched another folk/celtic nerd who has been listening and loving folk music for about 60 years.
Beautifully done Malinda...simply beautiful. Thank you.
Respect from this Greater Seattle bard. I feel your bit on Celtic folk tradition very deeply.
My soul could not help but smile watching you go through the historical context & explain/perform your version of this song. Every video your raw emotion & passion show us what a truly breathtaking woman & singer you truly are inside & out.
Much love & blessings to you 💚🤗🧡
Truly the voice that's in my heart and my soul. I've listened to this voice before I ever heard you sing. My thoughts of hearing an angel.
Just beautiful.. love your lyrics. Thanks, touched me soul.
These lyrics are so beautiful. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you so much, Malinda. It always brightens my day so much when you upload a video. I hope you read this.
I am bedridden due to a form of MS that begins in the early teenage years. Music helps me through a lot. Your songs are so... I can't even describe it.

Outstanding young lady. Beautiful rendition
I didn't know until recently that The Sky Boat Song even *had* words. I learned it years ago because it's a gorgeous tune.
When I heard this song...it made me cry, especially of what I'm going through... it made feel at peace somehow....
All's well, as I ended up here! Lovely!
Wow! Incredible reimagining of the lyrics and your amazing singing gave me chills. Thanks for sharing and for your insights.
How completely delightful brilliantly done. Thank you
Wow.... new favorite version. Resonated so strongly with me. 😭😭😭😭😭😍😍😍😍💜💜💜💜
Amazing amazing amazing
Who would have known a 600 year old song would travel so far and make a cable tv series Outlander a special show as it is
The song was first written in 1672
The title was first called the Boat song
Then changed to the lady boat song then in 1711 the skye boat song was sang by a 12 year old girl that had a baby and a husband in the highlands before he was forced into the British Navy
So the song is really about a girl missing her love of her world her husband
Soo beautiful and well written. I enjoy listening to your work so much, no matter the genre. Thank you for sharing this with us 😁👍💜👏👏👏👏
Enchanting version and an enchanting Lass..... just discovered your singing and videos a few days ago. stunning.......
Damn that was awe inspiring!!!! Nice addition of lyrics. You have so much talent. Thanks for every great effort.
Such a beautiful soul and singer! 🌟
That was beautiful. Don’t feel you have to justify your art, you are amazing at it.
Beautifully done! Amazingly adapted to this fine artist!
Dearest Malinda, this indeed so very beautiful, brings back very sad memories of a very beautiful lady that I loved many years ago - made my eyes wet..❄️❤️❄️
You really are an artist flower. Made even better in my book for your love of the history and celtic origins of folk songs/music.
Great song, fabulous cover picture
@snoproblem
Anglo Saxons don't tell me what to do..!!
This is SO beautiful. You brought tears to my eyes!
I sang this during high school and still love humming this tune. The song holds a special place in my heart.
Malinda, absolutely fantastic 💓
When I listen to this song, it makes me think of the urge to explore, a sence of curiousity. Actual mountains of rain and sun and sky and trees and rivers too. Instead of sad grief, it feels like something to listen to while wondering.
Wow. This made my heart and soul happy. Thank you for sharing with us.
This is so beautiful!!! I love that you added your own words and melodies. I agree that folk music is both meant to be changed in the way that it's performed, but also wanting to honor the one who composed the music as well.
Well done, Malinda!!
Beautiful! This is like the Celtic form of your Unavailable song! I love it!
Improved upon the original and non-original lyrics. YOUR VERSION is on my playlist when I depart, for my loved ones to remember me by. Thank you.
Deeply moved. Very Beautiful !
The heart loves love. Beautiful.
just found you on RUclips. completely feel your imagery here. thanks for this song. really touched the feels. keep up the great work.
You, your personality, energy and music are so beautiful! Live long and enjoy your future - from an old man.
Just simply beautiful
I am really in love with this version! Thank you so much!
I love how "historically accurate" folk music by its very nature means that ALL variations of it are historically accurate!
You're voice is fantastic, Malinda!😊💙💙💙💙💙💙💙👍. And the photo of you on the shore is so beautiful!⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐👍
After you described the history, I listened to the original and Robert Louis Stevenson version. Your reimagined version really captured the essence of the song, that the person changed between the beginning of the journey to the end. The footprints on the sand perfectly describes the same concept. Excellent reimagining.
Outstanding!! I really enjoy your work and creativity!
Very Beautiful song. Thank you for sharing this 😊
