From the creators of the Islamic State, we bring you... the Caucasus Emirate! The jihadist scourge in Russia and one of Putin's biggest headaches. In its decade-long history it terrorized the entire population of Russia and, above all, the republics of the North Caucasus. With the incursion of Salafism during the Russian-Chechen wars in the 1990s, this State project began, and by 2007 Putin believed he had already dealt with the chaos in Chechnya.
However, the presence of the Russian army in the region and the support of Putin's strongmen in the North Caucasus, such as our old buddy Ramzan Kadyrov, managed to curb the spread of a jihadist Salafism popular among Caucasian youth desperate for new opportunities that were impossible to find in the impoverished region. But although jihadist attacks have largely ceased, Salafism continues to lurk…
To what extent could jihadism become a real problem? What has jihadist terrorism been like in Russia? Is jihadism still an open front for Russia? Could it fuel old secessionist desires? In this video we tell you about it.

I‘m sorry, I like this channel, but I‘m a westerner and studied Islamic Studies and kinda specialized in Ex Soviet Republics and this Video is badly researched and tells a lot of shit. Of course Sharia is not in effect in russian regions at all. Certain russian regions being even a bit more homophobic than Moscow does not make Sharia. Is anybody getting their hands cut off if they steal? No! Yes, salafism (in case of Usbekistan for examble) is heaviliy sponsored by Saudi Arabia and even in certain russian regions this is an important and interessting Topic (see both Chechenia wars). Especially combined with soviet history. It poses quite some problems for russia but I‘m sorry don‘t get your hopes up, it wont contribute to the downfall of Russia unless shit really hits the fan all over Russia. Nevertheless it‘s a highly important topic, I suggest books by Peter Scholl-Latour about this topic. Maybe slightly out if date but reading even just one will make you understand what this video is lacking. All in all, really just 2/10. bad research, hight western hopes and no understanding about the last 50 years in central Asia and what it means for todays Russia. Slava.

There is another cause for Russia to fell apart. Ukraine adds fuel to the fire as any internal problem of Russia contributes to security of Ukraine. Kiev has officially recognized Ichkeria (independent Chechen Republic). De-jure that means that people of independent Chechnya do not participate in the current war and aren't responsible for it. It's a great motivation with very obvious material benefit - just gain independence and be free of sanctions, responsibility, etc. No one would blame Ichkeria for the war as no one blamed say Poland for WWII.

@@ConstructiveMinds100 That's exactly what I meant. There is no reason to blame Poland as it was occupied by Soviets and Germany in the very begging of WWII. Ukranians propose the same visions for Inchkerians: if you get independence - you are treated as an occupied state but not as part of the aggressor in the war. And independent Ichkeria might be a trigger for separatists movement all over Russia. In 90s the main reason of the first Chechen war was to stop separatism, which was quite popular that times. For example, personally me had been arrested for "illegal crossing of border of Karelian Republic from Lenigradskay Oblast" in 1996 - yep for walking from one part of Russia to another. While Russia being torn apart and divided is likely very little chance, if it does it will be in part because of jihadism. What wasn’t mentioned (unless I missed it) is that the Muslim minority have been overly represented in the mobilization. All of this could potentially end up causing such a huge a friction that we start seeing that community pull itself apart from Russia. But this is still a small chance.

    • @morceen

Muslims in Russia are on good terms with the government nowadays. Putin was smart enough to no longer repress them like the Communist Soviets did.
Anyone who's hoping for them to go against Russia is daydreaming.
Even if they wanted to go against Russia, they would need agreement from a global Islamic body of jurisdiction, and the Muslim world will not provide that, unlike what happened in Afghanistan and Chechenia previously when Saudi had a strong say on the Islamic level, and when they were willing to help the US destabilise the Soviets, unlike now with Russia, and as Saudi is no longer a respected nation among Muslims.
And even Saudi itself isn't on the same page with the US like they used to be in the 80s and 90s.
It might be the Afghans that fought the Soviets back then, but all the training, technical & logistic tasks were done by Arab volunteers (and undeclared government expeditions) from Saudi, Egypt, Kuwait, Jordan, Lebanon, Yemen, Morocco, and Sudan.
Good luck with that in 2023.
Muslims worldwide rightfully saw a danger in the US & Co, but an even bigger danger in the Soviets. Russia is not a danger to the Islamic world. Only one danger is left.
It was the Saudi schemes and the jihadists that had the biggest hand in taking down the Soviet Union, but they won't do the same to Russia. They witnessed the dangers of a unipolar globe in 2003, and believe it or not, the invasion of Iraq is the curse that started the inevitable decline of the US by opening the world's eyes on what the US is capable of and willing to do to force their interests.

That generalisation about Sufis and Salafis are very unnuanced lol, as it's in fact, most of the separatist movements happening in pre-Russian federation eras were mainly Sufis, especially of the famous Imam Shamil since 1800s for an independent Emirate from Russian Empire (much like to most of Sufi warriors during early to late Colonial eras until the early 1900s when the more parliamentary Saudi State became Saudi Kingdom and began to work with Western countries to fuels the modern world through petrodollar and so on), the recent Salafi fervours happens during the later eras of Cold War since late 80s with KSA starts funding brands of Salafism to being their favour, that is until they recently became more "progressive" after they found out petrodollar doesn't last as long as they thought to be to bring more investors and expands their businesses under Mohammad Bin Salman
All of these are mainly political ploys, Salafism and Sufism as brands of Islam doesn't mean anything with Jihadism are more often enabled with purely geopolitical chess, the ones that unironically making separatism for the sake of Jihadism alone are considered to be useful idiots by those whose invests, funds and channels all of their resources (from human resources, to money and different kinds of propagandas)

I am from Ingushetia, there is a lot of mistakes due to the incorrect gathered data. The author uses the official data that is why we find a lot of mistakes. In ingushetia there is no problem with finding a job or something like that, in fact, our regions that includes Chechnia, Ingushetia, Dagistan and others, are even richer then most of the Russian regions due to Islam, but all of that is not recorded very well, people work unofficially, there income is not recorded. Even the social activities like mirrage or something like the birthrate are not recorded, mostly because people don't accept the Russian Government and they don't trust it, like any other one, it is corrupted, even russians don't trust there own government. What about the Cacuasus, the problem is not with the Selefizm or Sufizim, Russian-Caucausin wars started in the 16 century when most of the people belived in Suffizm, due to the closed world and the lack of knowledge. The main proplem in Caucasus is "Freedom", it is hard to take it from within the hearts of the Caucasus people, even today, many people are tired already and they don't show that much of resistance, but the idea to obtain freedom is still hidden there. So, there are a lot of mistakes in the gathered statistics and there is problem with the way that Russia may explain the history of the Caucasus because of there own interests, today Russia may want the Caucasus territories because of the nature resources that is why they will be explaining our history from one aspect while they hide the other aspects, tommory when the resources will end and there will be no reason to occupy our territories they will be explainging our history from another aspect. In the same way Turkey also is fimilair with our history, the people who are considered as terrorists in Russia are heroes for Turkey, Turkey also have its own interets in Caucasus, many people from Turkey have roots from the Caucusus, they share the same belive and have traditions closer to us then the russians, also there is a lot of resources. Causus was under the Ottoman empire durring the Russian-Caucasian war. That is why Turkey may explain our history in a different way, I would say that Turkey have more truth in there explanation. But again, all that deppend on the interets of those who obtian power. So, in general, it's maybe a good idea to ask the locals of the place before making judgement, because they have there own view at all that. The truth should not be only in the hands of those who have power. And we should not forget that statistics may become a big lie. There is a greate book called "naked statistics", it could be very helpful, esspeically in our days.

If Dugin likes Guenon this much and integrates him into Eurasianist philosophy, no kidding they'd have a lot to support in Sufism. That said, to my understanding, Sufism is to Islam what Rosicrucianism is to Christianity or Kabbalah is to Judaism, ie. it's very much the magical and arcane (even Neoplatonist / advaitic) side of the faith - maybe not in all cases but when you look at the kinds of things Gurdjieff and Crowley drew on for influence.

Plus, the Russification of the population since independence means fewer and fewer people see themselves as anything but Russian Citizens.

After enough Russian combat power is destroyed in Ukraine, militant separatist movements in Russia itself are inevitable. How successful those movements will be is anybody guess and completely impossible to predict at this point anyway. However, one thing is certain. The birth of a number of new Islamic nations governed under Sharia law would be a VERY bad thing...

Choose your Sufism carefully. There are many flavors. People in the West often mistakenly believe that Sufism is a secular non-scary way to practice Islam. Islam-lite if you will. And they would be incorrect. Sufism is a big tent and the faithful don't all share the same mode of expression or ideology. The spectrum is a broad one.
