i have always reused the gaskets and shit all this time and i have never had an issue at all. all 3 DRZ's and like 15 total oil changes across all 3. its fine
Hi, i did an oil change on my bike today and only drained the oil out of the bolt connected to the tube. (7:10 - in your video) will this be a problem? thankyou
was the hose hard to disconnect for the hidden screen? I have an oil change coming up soon and last time i tried to disconnect the hose it was on there really really tight and i was afraid of damaging it. What is the best method to go about this?
Good tip. my 2020 just hit 500 miles. Plan to do the first oil change tom if autozone has filter with gaskets. Thanks man. Definitely gonna clean that filter for the first 3 oil changes. Lol
is that hose and filter on all DRZs? havent noticed it before? is it just a passage between the frame gallery and the bottom of the sump? y frame holds oil until the bike is started, i have to fill, run for 30seconds and add about half a quart
The factory manual states the oil level can be 1.9 litres for an engine rebuild, whereas the standard level is 1.7 litres. I’ve put 1.9 litres in my engine for the first 3 oil changes since I installed the stroker and big barrel kits. No issues.
@Litetrail Hardtail it causes air bubbles (foaming) and is worst than being slightly low. So long as the oil sump is picking up oil it's fine as filled to full. You put more than the engineers designed for an engine and you run the risk of foaming and other issues. Overfilling is worst than a qt low.
Thank you so much made it very easy! turns out I didn't have the 24 mm but I had a 1in deep socket that actually work just fine I believe 1mm off. Sweet bike I opted for new dirt bike rims and tires... and sprocket and chain... instead of the fat knobbies. How you like it?
My K&N filter didn't come with o-rings either. I got all my stuff ready for the first ~600 oil change (once it gets above freezing again lol). I got the same case savers waiting to go on also ;)
Interesting, I would have thought the K&N did. haha thanks for the Info. Looks like Thumper talk kit for next Oil change. So far those Case savers have been great.
I realize this video is old but im curious what kind of tires you have on the DRZ in this video? How did you like them on the street? On dirt? I have the stock SM tires and im looking for something a little more dual sport. Thanks for any help.
The same buna-nitrile rubber o-rings are used for automotive thermostats, oil coolers, oil passages between different mating surfaces, etc. In auto applications some of those can go for 75,000 miles without losing shape, elasticity, or the ability to compress. I wouldn’t be worried if I went 10 oil changes with my DRZ without changing them TBH. I get it though, they’re so cheap, why not just change them every time.
Wish I could post pictures as reply’s. I’m an ase master tech with L1 certification. The picture I would post would be of replacing a Chevy 2.4L 4 cylinder. The cause of the rod exiting the block was due to oil starvation. The cause of the oil starvation was a leaking rubber O ring that sealed the oil filter housing.
@@GladiusJon I’m ASE certified as well. If you’re talking about the GM 2.4 ecotecs, that’s not exactly a good example of a well engineered machine. They’re prone to all sorts of timing chain issues, oil leaks, and oil consumption issues that caused so much of those engines to fail that GM had to pay a class action lawsuit. That said, that DRZ would need multiple major rebuilds before it saw enough mileage to cause any substantial degradation to those o-rings. In an engine that needs a rebuild every 100 hours or so, you’re probably never going to see enough wear in the rubber o-rings that would lead to damage unless you neglected to change them throughout multiple engine overhauls. And with that said, I will still insist that there is literally no reason not to change them. Even if you can’t source the exact part#, you can find those nitrile rubber o-rings in almost any size at almost any hardware store.
Great tutorial!! Very in depth thx! I have a DRZ that I've owned for two years and I've never done the screen :/ lol however I do a lot of oil changes because I love knowing my oil is clean and I've never had a problem she runs like a champ!! I will be doing that screen next oil change but I'm afraid what I might find lol ✌🏻
I know that Suzuki redesigned their cam chain tensioner claiming that the problem was fixed. But in what year I do not know would you have any idea in what year this was done? And the other thing do we take their word for it. Thanks Jon
Ok thanks Bud. In your next how to vid can you show how you adjust the manual cam chain tensioner. That's when you do get it eventually. Maybe someday we'll go riding that's if you don't live to far from me?
Hi Jon, long time no talk. Just saying hi. I still have exact same 2017 SM, but with Shinko 700. Doing an oil change now on it, wanted to review the hidden screen 😁 Cheers, hope all is well. I know a lot has changed since this old video 😎
Jace Bigelow Hey! Good to hear from you!! All is well here, hope you and family are doing good with this craziness going on! Have you seen the Yamaha T700? Been thinking of getting another road bike but wanted to keep it dirt also.
You don't stand the bike straight up and down to do oil changes? You don't have a bike manual to tell you exactly what the torque specifications of everything is? Just askin'
sdq sdq the DRZ400E has hotter cams , larger porting on intake and exhaust valves, different jetting ( 2005 and earlier models had the fcr 39mm carburetor) longer travel suspension , closer ratio transmission, and about 40 hp ( the S/SM at 32 hp stock) definitely higher performance than the S/SM 😉
Thanks for your excellent commentary! You speak like a normal person... Not some fake sissy concerned about getting hits. Badass bike I must say. I like your setup....
@@GladiusJon you create a video for people to "learn how" to do an oil change. I'm glad to see that in the vid you used it only to remove - not to re-fasten.
@@ttime4four Right I agree. But I said in the video to torque it with a 1/4in ratchet. I specifically said multiple times those studs can snap. So I wasn't sure why using impact to remove was an issue?

You can get the oil change kit from the Thumpertalk Store for $15 and it has an OEM filter, gaskets, and new crush washers

No problem. They've got some good stuff in their store

Same, hey have you ever checked or cleaned that special screen??
Good vid. Tip for oil filter removal, use a magnet.
Great video, thanks! About to do this on my own DRZ400 and this is a great road map.
Very informative. Getting ready to do 1st oil change to my new-to-me 400sm. Thank you
My favorite part of the video is, wearing the cleanest f#*kin pair of pants. I had to show my wife and say, “see it’s not just me”.

Looks like supermoto wheels, I like how the front tire looks at a shorter height and wider

All of the oil goes into the frame, it all has to pass through the screen on its way to the motor.
slightly above is worse than slightly low

Which socket remover gun is tht ?
The book says to hold the bike vertical when checking the oil.
Do what makes you feel comfortable.
Hahahaha
....correct Ken.....
Is this oil change, changing the clutch fluid to?
Does the transmission fluid need to be changed or just the motor oil
whats that intro song bit?
I hear that the small O-ring is super important. I would not run without it. WIX sells filter and both O-rings.

What Tyers you running Bro??
Great information. Good video.
Can you link me up to a set of those tires??
Was just wondering do you have a manual cam chain tensioner, and is it really worth it? Does it really extend engine life? Thanks Bud
I do not have one yet. It is 100% worth it. The Stock one does put to much pressure on the Chain. Causing premature wear.
I know that Suzuki redesigned their cam chain tensioner claiming that the problem was fixed. But in what year I do not know would you have any idea in what year this was done? And the other thing do we take their word for it. Thanks Jon
To be honest I do not know. I personally dont plan on taking their word for it hehe.

How often are you changing the washers on the banjo bolt for the screen?
have not had the need to as of yet. I would say every 3rd time you check it.

Shawn Phillips oh yea. It’s a great bike! Still my favorite even after riding ultra light weight ktms
what oil did you run after initial hard break in 30-50miles? synthetic??
I ran Regular 10-40 motorcycle oil. You dont want to run synthetic before 1000 miles or so.
Gladius Jon oh okay shit i just put in 10w40 part synthetic first oil change..
Gladius Jon should i drain it out?? hasnt been run yet.
Part synthetic should be ok. Still has the Mineral in it, so the Oil molecules are not super small.
thanks for the vid! is the powerbomb worthy?
Does the drz have a wet clutch?
Ryan B yes
Also, if you're using an impact-don't.
using an impact is ok for removing bolts I thought. Just not for tightening.
What tank bag is that ??
Its the Rapid Transit , Recon tank bag.

How does DRZ400SM perform on dirt compared to the S model?
Honestly the same. With the exception of the rim/tire size. Im sure I could go faster though trails on a proper set of 18/21 in rims.
its the same bike ,just the tires ,suspension , i understand that e model has bigger exhaust port and fcr stock carb ?

please dont rev it really hard right after you just changed the oil and the bike is cold.
