Thank you for doing this. It is exposing me to so many great writers and to have you go in depth each time is very helpful in getting me to decide whether or not i want to delve into them.
I’m American but have been living in Cork Ireland for the past 10 years. I live halfway between Mitchelstown where Trevor was born and the former site of Bowen’s Court where Elizabeth Bowen was born. Must have been something in the water! I love both authors. My favourite Trevor novel is The Story of Lucy Gault. Haven’t read this one but will get it now. 🍀📚
Frieda looks neat and trimmed. I have a similar reaction to Trevor's novels. Something about them always feels like Trevor was forcing himself to expand his plots to novel length.
I’ve read a couple of his short story collections however simply adore and treasure my copies of two of his novels, Mrs Eckdorf in O’Neill’s Hotel and Felicia’s Journey. He had such a talent getting to the heart of ordinary lives and did squalor so well.
I've read about half of his work, some novels and lots of stories - totally agree on all points. Subtle, understated and deceptively well written are common descriptions of his work but he is often dealing with some dark themes at the same time like Irish history in this case. Also your point about his improvement over time is so true, even though his early stories are brilliant, some of the later collections are amazing - surely the Collected volume must be a Penguin Classic one day!
Fools of Fortune wasn’t one of my favourites. Death in Summer and Love in Summer are good but slight. The best? The Story of Lucy Gault Felicia’s Journey Other People’s Worlds Nights at the Alexandra Mrs Eckdorf in O’Neill’s Hotel.
Loving this waddle through the Penguins. I'm not familiar with William Trevor's work, so found todays episode particularly interesting. Thanks for soldiering on while feeling under the weather Steve. Your efforts are greatly appreciated. Hope you feel better soon.
I picked up Trevor in a little free library but have not touched the book yet. I think it was Last Stories, maybe? Do take care of yourself, Steve. Keeping you in my thoughts.
Hey Steve, I've been watching your channel for a month now! Loving this series and your views on some of these books. Take care of yourself during these crazy times. I hope you feel better!
Thanks for the positive comments about Wm. Trevor. I've read many of his novels, and I also have that chunky volume of short stories you recommended. Is he my favorite author? No, but he is very readable!
Regretfully I have never read anything by William Trevor, perhaps it is time to take the plunge. I hope you feel better soon, at least you have Miss Frieda to keep your spirits up.

Brilliant writer - don't think he ever put a foot wrong.
I agree!
Loved this riff on William Trevor! Feel better, you!
