On Saturday 15th February 2014, Emily Barker & The Red Clay Halo played a sold out show in the prestigious Hall One at Kings Place as part of the Americana Music Association UK showcase. Early the next morning they went in to Mark Ronson's Zelig studios and set up to record direct to vinyl via a link through to Gearbox Records' incredible mastering suite next door.
The result was a limited edition 500 copies on 10" vinyl pressed at renowned vinyl manufacturer Optimal in Germany and released on Record Store Day 2014.
Emily writes about the song choice in the sleeve notes:
"My dad bought the Tunnel of Love record back in 1987 when it was released and it immediately became the family’s most played album on long car journeys. If you live in Australia, car journeys are often pretty epic, so it wasn’t long before my siblings and I knew every word to every song on this record. And what a record it is! Strangely, I forgot about it for years until, by fated coincidence, I recently went on a car journey with my brother, Joel. We were travelling down the very same road we used to travel down as kids (in the back of the 1968 Peugeot 504 Estate on our way to the Southern Ocean for a camping trip) and Joel put Tunnel of Love on the car stereo. Suddenly I was struck, again, by the power of this record. As an adult, I found the lyrics spoke to me in a way I didn’t comprehend as a child. Springsteen is a fabulous storyteller, with ‘Tougher Than the Rest’ being a perfect example. He has inspired the way I try to tell my own stories."

You know, Ms Barker, it's a few years since I watched any of your videos, but late last night several came up in a mix I set playing. And you know what? They changed my mood quite radically. I went to bed in a more wistful, slightly melancholic, but calmer frame of mind. I can't tell you what caused it except to say that it was something subtle to do with your voice and the set of your eyes. I shouldn't go on, I know, but if you're capable of changing somebody's mood, it's a rare gift.
