It's a mech that's dependent on terrain to a huge degree. In anything with open terrain it's a deathtrap. In a city environment it becomes an opponent so intimidating I'd think twice about even trying.

For a number of years I discounted the Victors flexibility on the battlefield. It wasn't until I found myself forced to incorporate one into a merc company that I was running that I started to appreciate the value that it could bring, especially when it is included in an all jump-capable lance.

The Victor is one of those Mechs that never got the "obvious" upgrade in the lore. All you need is ES and DHS to free up close to ten tons, allowing you to add armor and plenty of weapons. Larger/Additional SRMs (or swapping them for LRMs), more medium lasers, an ER large laser, additional ammo or electronics packages, the list goes on. Converting it to a perfect sniper platform or doubling down on it's close range firepower without adding a fragile engine seems like the easiest adjustment, yet most of the early variants with LosTech always still seemed lacking.

    • @Cha-Khia

I actually enjoy the fact that some mechs have the glaring flaws. The Hauptman was designed to fit an XL engine, and would benefit greatly from it, but never has one for some reason (in lore explanation is that the manufacture either can't build XL's that size, or wanted to save money), the Urbanmech is a literal walking trashcan, and outside of it's intended role is exactly what it looks like.
Mechs that have obvious flaws parody real world military equipment rather well, some mechs have flaws, while others don't some military equipment is the best it could possibly be (with or without the grunt approved modifications), while some equipment is "built by the lowest bidder" as all military equipment is, and some equipment operates as such.

None of what makes it good in tabletop really translates to Mechwarrior. In tabletop, especially in the right terrain, it’s awesome to jump in and deliver an AC20 shot, a flight of SRMs and a 90 ton punch or kick. In MW, it’s a big slow target with poor armor for its size that the AI probably focuses on because it’s probably the biggest thing in the lance.

Always had that hero variant loaded down with modded gear. Putting a Sniper cannon on it covers it at range, and swapping out one med laser with a flamer gives you a chance against close in threats. Use inferno SRM munitions in the launcher. You can shut down most threats too close to hit with the arty via heat. Jump back a bit and hit the now immobile threat once out of the AOE.

That said, there was one configuration I made in MegaMekLab for a campaign which might be interesting. I called it the VTR-9L, and its lore establishes as a Capellan refit that debuted in 2883. The refit had three objectives: reducing reliance on ammunition, improving long range capabilities, and improving anti-infantry capabilities. To this end, the AC/20 was swapped out for a PPC, the SRM-4 was upgraded to an SRM-6, a flamer was mounted on each arm, and the remaining seven tons were filled with additional heat sinks.

During one mech-on-mech battle set in the lead-up to the Fouth Succession War, our company faced one where the enemy commander used a Victor. He used the assault mech's mobility to great and painful effect, frequently making shots from the rear facing. The mere hint of a DFA sent mechs scrambling to evade! Our line fell into chaos and the battle hung in the balance for several nail-biting turns. He actually took out 2.5 of our mechs by himself, and only finally fell because our unit's ace deliberately faced him down. It was a Pyrrhic victory, as the company was badly chewed up and couldn't reach the objective. We took the Victor and a T-bolt as our spoils from the fight. Our ace took the Thunderbolt as a replacement for his mangled Marauder, and the Victor became a strike lance leader when the unit upgraded to two entire companies.

One of the all time greatest assault mechs, at least for my play style. Sure it might lack a bit for armor but it's got enough firepower to beat the brakes off of anything that gets into range and it can close the distance get right up in your business and rip your face off faster than you'd think, and for an IS assault mech that ability is relatively rare and incredibly valuable. It's incredibly deadly close in and it makes a wonderful hammer when paired with a suitable anvil.

Last year I was playing in a role-playing game BattleTech a time of war but we were also using the regular BattleTech rules whenever we would be playing in our Mechs.
We had one mission where we were short of doing okay. Weird hunted down a bunch of pirates that were rating a world we were guarding and we'd slugged it out with him kicking them in the ass.
Think about it was on the tabletop we were playing at we had a bridge that we were trying to secure and take down the enemy and there's also woods on both sides. We're in the middle of trying to take the bridge when out of the woods appears a Victor.
We had already been caught up in a running fight with two lances of medium Mech .
On our side we had hunchback, crusader, thunderbolt, vindicator, Wentworth, and a Orion.
We were up against besides the victor. Four bulldog tanks, four goblin tanks,

A Goliath, and two medium mix I can't think of right off hand. When the Victor showed up it had been a hell of a fight after then but we'd managed to smash the tanks and it destroyed all but one of the mechs but we were all pretty chewed up.
My hunchback had a lot of internal damage and I was surprised I hadn't got blown up yet.
In truth the Victor shows up and starts lighting into us. When we all saw it we had no s*** moment and we all turned our guns on it and opened fired with everything we had. Only reason we got out of that fight and as good of pieces we did and on our first go round one of the guys hit it with a medium laser in the head. And then another one hit it with 2 lrm 10 pack both shoot got two strike to the Head.

    • @jasonthomas9596
      @jasonthomas9596 2 года назад

After that we were able to sweep across the bridge and finish off most of the bad guys. In truth it was still a hellacious running fight. We still talk about the l the two lrm strikes both 10 packs got maximum missiles away and out of them 15 points hit the left shoulder another five points hit the right arm and between two missile strikes 15 points hit the head each time along with the medium laser. We got lucky three times but I remember all of us opened up on it we really couldn't do a lot of damage to it. At the time I had lost my ac10 on my hunchback. And that damn autocannon 20 it already blown an arm off. I remember thinking we were screwed. One round later we're walking over the last of the dead guys and going holy s*** that was a fight.

    • @BigRed40TECH
      @BigRed40TECH  2 года назад +4

More internal structure helps. Big damage kicks really help, and the missiles work great with the AC-20, as it punches holes, and the missiles find them. It also has more heatsinking ability too. And because the AC-20 is in the arm, if you sneak up behind him and he doesn't have a better target, the VTR might just turn around and headshot you in the firing phase.
Not to say it's the greatest mech ever, but it's got more going for it that some give it credit.

The Victor is an assault mech that needs a support lance. Pair it up with an Archer or other LRM carriers and you've presented sufficient reason for your opponent to rush into the Victor's effective range. Also the Victor really benefits from having their targets softened up by LRM fire. After getting a light dusting of LRMs a lot of mechs will take internal damage on the first AC20 hit.
An assault class brawler needs as much armor as possible. While a lot of people love the idea of an 80 ton mech doing a Death from Above ... that is 8 tons worth of jump jets that could of been pumped into armor and other weapons. Also the upgrade variants ... they all could of ripped 5 tons of normal heat sinks out and replaced the engine's default 10 with double heat sinks. That extra 5 tons could be transformative. Like maybe upgrading the AC20 to an Ultra 20 then using the remaining tonnage to add a mix of additional ammo and armor. Considering the additional heat and ammo consumption caused by an Ultra 20, maybe rip out the SRM4 and use the tonnage for additional ammo, CASE, and even more armor.

Victor 9Ka is cool because it's got improved jumpjets letting it mount one more JJ for the weight of 3.5 bringinit to the important 5 jump breakpoint where you're not taking a worse personality to shoot Sadly it's not really great in an actual fight 6 tons of ammo on the AC20 and heatsinkage I think the Gauss might have been a better option at that point.

Yes, the Victor is vulnerable in 'open' terrain. But, that is not what it was designed for. Urban, Jungle, and broken terrains are it's 'bread and butter'.
I have one player that rarely speaks to me this day, because I leaped an 80 ton Mech over a building and DFA'd his best pilot.
With upgrade technologies like, Endo, Ferro, XL Engines, Light Gyros or even Compact or Heavy Duty ones, Targeting Computers, DSHS, and such, The Victor can be even more lethal in it's 'native' environment.
So long as you don't deploy this Mech to an 'open' terrain, it can perform admirably. And with both a good Pilot, and good Tech, in it's 'element', it can come out as it's name suggests... The Victor.

With modded jumpjets that attempt to get it close to what it should be in MechWarrior 5 the stock configuration went from just 'aight to amazing.
Nothing fills me with more power than seeing an enemy 'mech several hundred metres away and just flying towards that bastard straight into effective range. It was then I learned how powerful jumpjets should be and that their power is not limited to that of just getting somewhere nice to lob a shot at long range like I thought they were. HBS Battletech affirms this and really taught me what that system can do and why some 'mechs sacrifice so much for it... Just some sacrifice a bit too much in my opinion (Hammerhands, Quickdraw, I'm looking at you).
Someday when I get to play tabletop I will hopefully get my hands on a Victor.
But the first time I fell in love with it was in MechWarrior 4, where there we had the VTR-10S albeit a bit heavier armed than canonically. That Heavy gauss and gauss combo is always a combination I found so fun in that game.

  • @NemFX

The Victor is honestly the Hollander's older brother. It's meant to be a 'gotcha' mech, that's best for ace pilots and dueling. The problem is obvious; you don't always get to pick your battles. This mech would be great in urban combat, since it's basically an Urbanmech. My biggest gripes with it are the poor armour, and the secondary weapons. I'd drop the ac20 for one or two ac10s, and if there's any weight saved, bump up its collection of secondary weapons. Oh and drop the srms, cause I hate them. I hate them so much.

If a mech doesn't fit it's class anymore the usually what happens is that it gets outclassed not just by it's class mechs but also of mechs of lower classes/tonnage.

If I could figure out how to do houserules in MegaMek/MechHQ I'd drop the AC/10 to 10 tons, the AC 5 to 6.5 tons, and the AC 2 to 4 tons; the AC/10 and /5 would each use 1 less critical space, and I'd keep all other stats the same. Ultimately energy weapons will be superior still, but the vanilla ACs would be more competitive.
(I also tend to ignore the rule that the ammunition for the Rifles dont deal half-damage. I dont see why they couldnt fire ammunition made with modern alloys and such >_>. If its a vintage one from an Age of War era tank or something, then yeah, it would deal less damage, or risk breaking down whenever it fired a shot due to stress)
