As an adult with SPD but not autism I seriously want to thank you for highlighting the fact that you don't need to be autistic to have it! I was never diagnosed in childhood and simply told I had an undiagnosed learning disability instead and given an IEP to help with it (which was better than nothing but still not perfect). Because I only ever saw it associated with autism which I new I didn't have I never realized it was possible to have on its own until two years ago and suddenly so many things in life made sense and I finally felt validation and understanding. As another sufferer of texture issues I can also relate to the struggles with food he has and so much more! Thanks for highlighting this!

Hi, I just now may seem to have an understanding of why my 5 year daughter has had so many issues, with eating, hair wash, brushing, language and articulation. All the times so many assessments, they were like this is not autism but there is something may be language disorders. But I believe I have an answer.need to show this to the therapist. May I ask did you had articulation/language problems in childhood???

My daughter has had SPD since a baby ,she has always had difficulties with the texture of certain clothing ,bath time , sounds ,and so much more .a lot of times people will pass it off as there is nothing wrong with her and they think she is just being picky or spoiled and as a mother it upsets me. It has been a challenge for me because she and myself have been through so much since my husband passed away when she was ten months old . our daughter is now 9yr old and she has come so far but she still struggles with a lot but she is also doing a great job at coping with it. She is such a smart and sweet and loving little girl and I am so proud to be her mother. As a parent it hasn't always been easy but I will do everything in my power to help my daughter and show her how much I love her. I thank God for my baby .

See, it's not always the kid "being a brat". The kid has SPD; the sensation of mushy food, or brushing his hair, or taking a bath is literally hell for him as far as his hypersensitivity. Same with him not wanting to wear certain shirts to school; the textures are irritating for him.

I made this metaphor once that sapphire blue ice powers are the sensory and fire breathing powers are the smarts. The sapphire blue ice powers get out of control a lot and do silly things sometimes. I plan on writing a children's book series for kids with "sapphire blue ice powers" to help them with it. I used to have these bad meltdowns as a little girl and my aunt called it "manipulation". It make me cry to see him go through this. I understand it because I live with this everyday. My autism is no fun. And sensory issues are a real struggle And can cause me pain and anxiety. Its so much harder to need a routine and consistent environment. Add the communication and processing issues to make friends. Now imagine being this. You cant learn with sensory issues that cause pain and anxiety. You cant sit still or pay attention. The way it feels it is scary. Then try and communicate with someone else when you don't understand fully because the sounds hurt my ears and lights can too much. Now add more things to this. Add the issues if a slight change in routine or expectations it causes a fit. Everyday i have this issue. Meltdown are not fun. It scares me. Then having a dad who punishes me and mistreat me so I have a meltdown or behavior issues is so isolation and depression and scarry and and that makes autism so much worse. Have a home is supposed to feel safe. Not abusive. Not scary. Dads are to love kids. Kids are to help dads. Dads are to show the kids and teach the kids. My dad stopped teaching and help me with skills 7 years ago and I have behavior issues because i dont know what is expected or how to do things. He punsh me fkr it. Im 38.

My 2 year old son was just diagnosed with ADS and SPD. I’m on the fence with ASD because he is so social but he does not eat and never really has, just crunchy food and brown coloured food. Places like malls and sporting events cause him to begin jumping up and down and screaming. If we’re in Walmart for more then 15 minutes he begins hitting his head on the handle bars of the shopping cart and starts clacking with his tongue. Since birth he’s had severe vomiting, normally 2-3 times a day and is iron deficient because he can’t eat most food and throws a tantrum if we introduce new ones. He also struggles to brush his teeth. He will sit in a poop filled diaper an entire day if he could and not care. He doesn’t like tags on clothing and will begin trying to remove the shirt while crying because he doesn’t like the feel of it. Shoes must remain on at all times but wants to walk on rocks with his bare feet. He’s amazing at daycare if it’s just him or 2 others. If there’s 5 there he refuses to play with the other children and starts lashing out by throwing toys at them and having meltdowns that keep the other children from napping. Hardest part of it all is he masks like a champion so my parents and sibling don’t see it. He’ll be amazing with them and happy all day but then come home and refuse to eat, sleep and will spend hours running around and eventually crashing with a meltdown.

I have always had sensory issues which makes since because I have adhd and this is an issue with people with adhd too, I’ve always had issues with food and clothing, I also use an extra soft toothbrush because my toothbrush felt like razor blades so I switched to an extra soft toothbrush cuz I saw a hard toothbrush that looked similar so I thought that that was why even after months it wasent getting any less painful but from looking at my family’s toothbrushes they all have soft toothbrushes so that meant mine was too so the most likely reason is because I’m more sensitive to how things feel on my body which also include my teeth too which is most likely why even tho it was a soft toothbrush, I needed an extra soft toothbrush in order to brush my teeth because my dentists have told me that I wasent brushing hard enough cuz I was being really gentle, even tho it was because it hurt a lot and now with a extra soft toothbrush I’m now able to brush my teeth normally, I’m not rough because that hurts your gums but I’m able to brush my teeth normally like gentle but not so gentle just to make it hurt less so now I’m able to not worry about going light due to the pain and now I can brush properly for 2 minutes without forcing myself to endure the pain, for flossing I use floss picks and I’m able to use it the right way by watching dentists show how to use it properly because anything with dentistry if your gonna use it then use the right technique and use to properly or it’s not gonna do what it’s supposed to do, I also use a water flosser and a tongue scraper

Brain scans show that those with SPD have neurological differences in the direction of the white matter tracts of their brains, particularly seen at the back of the brain, which relays sensory info. It might help some parents to think of it as a biological difference that requires support, not as a behavior that their kids are willfully performing.

I know she is trying her best and I all give her credit for that
    But as someone with spd
The way she reacts to her son's 'triggers' as I call them
Makes me feel so bad for him
When I'm having a bad reaction to a stimuli or I'm forced to put up with a trigger stimuli
I dont want extra pressure on top of that
Dont force your kid to do something that puts them in a uncomfortable position unless its 100% neccessary
I'm not too sensitive when it comes to food but the things I dont like due to texture or Smell
I dont want to be pushed to eat
And because he is younger he cant fully communicate what he is feeling
So her pressuring him to use toothpaste when she knows it's a trigger makes me a little upset
It seems like the toothbrush is already to much
Let him get used to the toothbrush
Like this is my opinion but when kids are this young
Just let them live as comfortably as possible as long as they arent causing any harm to themselves
Not saying dont do therapy but dont push them past their limits
Use therapy to make the world more comfortable for them
When they are older and have a better understanding of how to cope with their spd and their triggers start trying to do therapy to move past a hurtle like adding tooth paste to an already uncomfortable toothbrush
    Again my opinion
Thats how my parents did it when I was little and it worked really well for me

MoonStorm-- Can I ask how your eating is now? Like do you still stick to certain foods with certain textures or would you say it's very varied?

I'm with you on this. My youngest has SPD, and while it was a struggle in the beginning, the struggle was mostly on my part as her mother. Once I got past "Why won't she wear this cute shirt I bought her, she's wasting my money" and settled into "Help me pick out a shirt you won't mind wearing", a lot of the struggle settled down. We supported the brain difference, instead of fighting against it. We learned about sensory diets. Sure, I liked going to Buffalo Wild Wings, but she couldn't take the noise and it would ruin dinner for everyone, including her. So I learned to bring headphones and activities for her or we did take out. Instead of making her use our extra minty toothpaste, we tried a bunch and found a flavor she liked, and then I just offered it to her on a baby soft brush...I didn't ask her if she wanted to brush, or if she wanted a bath, for that matter.
The questions can cause the anxiety and refusal as much as subjecting them to sensory overload can. Heaping guilt or shame on top because they are so "difficult" compounds the problem. For bath time, we learned to fill the tub with her in another room so she wasn't exposed to the roar of the water and played soft music so that she felt soothed, and unless she was reallllly dirty we only washed her 2-3 times a week... By the time she became a preteen, we had found a small dose of anti-anxiety medication that helped to diffuse a lot of her sensory overload and now she tries more things on her own. Meds can be scary, and may not work on the first try, but they can also be a useful tool that can add to the child's quality of life, which ultimately relieves stress on the whole family.

I am going through this as well and feel these kids need to going to school from home unfortunately. That seems best for the child because adults with this said school was depressing and not good due to their eating disorder. How can a hungry kid even focus.

@@LaSheaT luckily he qualified for the special Ed preschool program through our school district. They said he is showing early adhd signs and speech delay. He is thriving now with only 7 kids and 3 specialized teachers .

@@L._._ that is awesome. So glad he is thriving and they let him attend. Less students definitely helps the kids learn and focus better. Some kids outgrow adhd and get better as they get older🙏. My son food menu is so limited I can't send him. Praying he gets better in a few years. 🙏

@@L._._ oh okay. That is good and exactly it is a start and it gets him into the routine of being in school and what it is like and he is learning at the same time. Thank you! I was looking at a free an online school that I saw in my state I believe it is 4 hours a day for Kindergarten, but I will look into that as well. 😊

Arghhh the way this video is edited is very overstimulating for someone with a sensory sensitivity! I actually can't watch it because all of the rapid jump cuts, in combination with the dramatic music, is sending my brain and body into sensory overload and triggering panic.
