    What most people don't realise is that Zidane was a big powerful, strong midfielder, with amazing silky skills. However what helped his game was that he had a real competitive, aggressive, nasty side to his game, which was only noticeable when you watched him up close (live, not on television). Managed to see him a few times and he was a monster in all aspects of the game, which made him so difficult to play against

      I was real young when I saw this. I never understood why only Zidane got punished, and why so hard.
      Despite the stoic appearence you can see he was a serious man, both in and outside the field - part of the reason why the headbutt happened. I respect the fucc out of him, not only for his skills, but for not giving a shxt about carreer when respect was involved. I bet the italian never looked at Zidane or talked at him the same way, ever again.
      Also, if Zizou wanted, he would've killed that man.

    Didn't get to watch him as a footballer but i watched him as a a manager in my team real madrid, winning all the trophies and from what i saw everyone has all the kind of praize for the man as a player

    As an Italian, I can never loose my admiration for Zidane. What a player and what a career in football. It was a real shame it ended like that in the World Cup final of all games. You could tell Zidane was very frustrated prior to him being sent off. None the less. A legend!

    One of the best moves done in football! I never founded Zidane guilty of taking on Materazzi, he deserved it and Zidane gave what he earned. One of the greatest, so not the greatest midfielder of all time! The quality this man had with the ball will not so easily come back to the pitches

    Cristiano is my favourite actual player from a far, but Zizou is for me the best player of the world ever, his class and magic can't be touched. I remember watching this final and crying when he got the red card, i was 13 years old

    I watched this as a 15 year old and it was heartbreaking. Watching this as a 31 year old, it still brings tears to my eyes. So much has changed since 2006, yet this is etched in my memory and will stay with me till my last breath.
    As a kid, who grew up without his father, a male role model, zizou was my idol and I remember having nights of sobbing and thinking what might've been had zizou scored against buffon moments before this. I've never loved a player like this guy.
    This makes me want to go back and relive the time between 2006-2022 and make amends regarding so many things but that's life, once it goes by, it never comes back. I guess we all need to cherish it as much as possible.
    My heart still hurts seeing him make that lonely walk.
    The end of an era.

      @@redstarline4250 Thank you, my brother. Nostalgia is a wonderful yet a dangerous thing. I do look back on those years with fondness and this World Cup with a bit of bittersweetness.
      i'm in a way okay with all these great azzurri legends getting their due but the little boy in me would proabably give the cup to Zizou in a heartbeat. But yes, plenty to be thankful about in life.

    Since then Italy in world cups, group stage exit in 2010, 2014 and didn't even qualify for 2018, 2022 worldcups. Zindane curse is real, they should not qualify for atleast for 3more world cups.
