It's good that you made this video. I think that the battle for the Netherlands East Indies (now Indonesia) is almost forgotten because there was never made a movie of any kind about it. People do not have a clue how much horror there has been, on sea, on land and in the air, led by the military of allied nations and by civilians. I hope that one day a Dutch (or American?) filmmaker sees an opportunity for a documentary film in this.
Thank you for your comment. The battle has been overshadowed for a long time. I think the lack of movies about this probably come as a result of this. The Japanese conquest of the Dutch East Indies was basicly a battle in a string of battles (Philipines, Malakka, British North Borneo, Singapore and Burma) that mark the defeat of western powers. On top of that: these countries are now independent. They have no film industry of significance and also no reason to film it, because it does not serve any national ambition. In the beginning most Indonesians saw the attack of the Japanese as a good thing. A thing that set them free from the Dutch. But little did they know that the Japanese turned out to be more brutal occupiers.

Hello. I appreciate your details on the movies. I am writing the story of a friend (born in 1923) to a wealthy Dutch family in Batavia. In 1942, she and her mother were interned in a Japanese POW camp (Tjideng). She was 18 at the time and a nursing student. I am trying to write accurately. My first question is this: her memory recalls the Japanese storming into the hospital on a Thursday. I am assuming it was Thursday, March 5th. My second question is a bit more complicated. She speaks five languages,(she's an astute nearly 97 year old) including English. She not only became the camp translator, but also was commanded to ride her bicycle from the camp to the hospital and then (1943/44 ish) to one of the nicest homes in the elegant part of downtown to give a shot to a high-ranking Japanese commander on a daily basis. The home he occupied had a circular drive and she passed four armed guards each day to enter the mansion. He spoke English and had been educated in part, in America. I cannot find any officer (16th or otherwise) who was younger, not wearing glasses, good-looking with straight hair (her description) who spoke English. I promised her I would try to research his name, as he treated her with respect and carried on intellectual conversations about art and history with her each day. The name Yamamoto vaguely rang a bell, but she has blocked a lot of the four years in the camp. If you have any contacts who can help, I believe she will recognize either his name, or possibly what US university he attended. She does remember a commander, Okamura, who was horrible. I typically write contemporary romantic suspense, so this is a labor of love to Iris, and a learning experience about this time period. Through research I have met a man in the Netherlands, Dirk Teeuwen, who is also historically knowledgeable/adept during this time frame. I have written Iris's biography for her family, now I am turning her amazing, challenging, and romantic story. She'd been married barely two months to a military officer sent to Bali when the Japanese invaded and separated them for 4 years. She never gave up hope he was alive. Fascinating video, I really loved the skits especially. I'm actually using this as a guide to play Hearts of Iron IV as the Netherlands, this ought to be a bit difficult.
my grandfather from Tasmania who was aust 2/3 machine gun battallion in java and my understanding about the battle for java was very different than this. The aussies got stranded on java without their guns after being in the middle east, they were setup in a brigade called blackforce under WW1 VC recipient brigadier arthur blackburn. the brigade was made up of 2/3 MG and 2/2 pioneers battalion, the third battalion with a guard battalion and base admin staff and stragglers, supported by a battery of texas artillery, a squadron of the kings own hussars and the 2/6th australian field company of engineers. The order to land in Java was given by the commander in chief of the short lived ABDA General Wavell, who said the aust 6th and 7th division would not come to java and a small force of australians under blackburn was to stay for political reasons to bolster the dutch resistance and the prolong it as long as possible, hoping to boost the morale of the dutch army in java...it is said that the dutch navy and air force fought bravely and earned everyones respect but the same cannot be said about the dutch army as a whole, even though it had in it many brave men. there is a record of a dutch army ambonese colonial troops fighting the japanese troops defeating the first tenative enemy paratroop landing at palembang and there was a infantry section at banten bay that engaged the japanese for a short while before withdrawing. there were dutch army units on duty at the aerodrome but the officers went home each night and returned in the morning and the machine gunners stood at 0500hrs before the dutch arrived the difference in attitude towards the duties as a soldier didnt help raise the aussies respect. Was the plan of the dutch to cover the road south of batavia but they withdrew all troops to bandung...the aussies received incorrect intel info from the dutch resulting in loosing a couple recon patrols and was the intention of the dutch to hold the river at Djasinga, but retreated through the blackforce lines whilst against the express orders of Colonel Williams, the dutch engineers prematurely blew up the bridge at tjianten river .... General ter Poorten faced with strong japanese forces advancing on bandung from the north and the west, ordered blackforce through General Schilling to hold up the japanese at leuwiliang for 24 hours while the dutch consolidated in bandung for capitulation. was said to be 300,000 japanese on the island and the aussies tried to escape the island etc and destroyed their equipment including two brand new latest design vickers machine guns still in their boxes scrounged from the dutch stores. my grandfather spent 3.5 years on the burma railway, he had no animosity towards the japanese but i can assure you 110% they didn't have the dutch fighting with them, retreating but not fighting. i guess those things don't even scratch the surface for my grandfather adding an extra 3.5 years as pow's together, that really confirmed his feelings..... the surrender of the dutch on java had made the capitulation of blackforce inevitable but is argued it might of saved the lives of those who survived captivity....as the Lieutenant governor of the netherlands east indies, Dr van Mook said at a special press conference in Adelaide Australia that he believed "that the Australians in Java would fight side by side to the last with the dutch forces. The dutch army did not fight at all" so i certainly wouldn't be making out the dutch army showed bravery in combat etc in the battle of java mate...i grew up with someone who was there when it happened.
My Dutch grand uncle fought there and was captured. He was then taken to Birma to work on the infamous Brirma railroad. He survived, but I've found out more about what happened there through this video than I ever did from him. I guess the memories were too horrible.
My grand uncle was also taken to Birma he didn't like to talk much about it either, but he once told me he had to hunt flies to eat for survival. Awful what happened there...
From the book, Red Sun Rising. Japan's military history from the Meiji Restoration onward, is actually different from what you might expect. They were largely admired by the West among the Far East countries' troops. In the Russo-Japanese War, they were reported as much more civilized than the Chinese had been in their wars, and they showed mercy and military courtesy to fallen and wounded Russian soldiers. In WW1, Japan's seizing of German held Tsingtao, China was lauded as "manly" and completely accepted. They even helped the western powers subdue the Chinese Boxer Rebellion in 1900-1901. So their fierce, brutal reputation was not something they always had.
Great observation. Strange how before and after WW2 they are some of the most well behaved soldiers in the world. What is so different about WW2 for Japan to suddenly commit alleged atrocities? Tojo never gave any order to loot, kill, or r4pe civilians. No commanding officer has been proven to done so.

My Grandfather is Dutch, born in 1931 in Rotterdam, he had no love of the Japanese, he didn’t have any real hate of the Germans even though he lived under their occupation.
Most people don't realize this, but both the east and west "Indies", were named after "Indi"-anapolis Indiana. You can see the obvious similarities. The Indies, like Indianapolis, are landlocked, temperate, and have cold, snowy winters! It reminds me of Canadian British Columbia, which was named after the South American country of Colombia, due to the hot, tropical, conditions in BC, and it's close proximity to the equator! Lol
That is weird as Indiana means “land of the Indians” (Native Americans) and since the capital was founded as late as 1821, I think You make the mistake A certain Christhoper Colombus made when he tought he found the short route to India only to have re-discovered the Americas....
6:23 the attack on the British Malaya took place before the bombing of pearl harbor, preceding it by an hour. The Japanese troops landed on the beach of Kota Bahru slightly after midnight on December 8th. But due to the international date line, the attack on Pearl Harbor was dated as December 7th.
Thank for your reply Alberto. The Japanese were indeed better equiped and battle hardened. One note: the VOC (United East Indies Company) by that time did not exist any more. It went bankrupt around 1800. The Dutch government took control of the territories after the Napoleontic Wars in 1816.

Somebody talked about Dutch East Indies here. The former Dutch-colony is very diverse. I have read some references about Dutch East Indies (1815-1942). For Example, Twentieth century impression of Nederlands Indie, Achehnese, etc. Do you have some references about Japanese settlements in Dutch East Indies (1942-1945) in English, Japanese, or Indonesian?
Thank you for your comment. Basicly you can say that Indonesia before 1815 was referred to by the Dutch as "the Dutch possessions in the Indies" and afterwards (1815 - 1942) as the "Dutch East Indies". By 1815 many regions of the archipelago still had to be conquered what happened mostly in the 19th centuty. Acheh however was officially taken at the eve of WW1, but the Dutch never had fully control there. There were always rebels/freedom fighters and skirmishes going on. My main source was the book of P.C. Boer "The Loss of Java The Final Battles for the Possession of Java Fought by Allied Air, Naval and Land Forces in the Period 18 February-7 March 1942". Unfortunaly I can not find directly material about Japanese settlements in DEI during WW2 (1942 - 1945) except for 1000/10 000s imperial soldiers. I can guess that living relativily close to the enemy (Australia) would not be found very attractive. Also, 3,5 years of occupation was too short to make large migration happen, especially with war going on in the Pacific. Korea is another story. This country was annexed in 1910 and with close proximity to Japan and the absense of war many Japanese settled in Korea.
My father was in Indie for 3 years. I have his photo album from that war. On the way back from Indie an enterprising Dutch Corporal confiscated one the 2 Klewangs and a kris dagger my Dad had in his duffel bag. The rotten kloot sac no doubt kept it for himself I also now possess 5 klewangs and 8 kris daggers, one from the 1800's. One of the klewangs is listed in the "Klewang", a hard cover book that I ordered from the Dutch military museum.
Hey, I used to write historical articles according to my exploration (old buildings etc) and match my old buildings documentation with internet pictures from indies era to make a comparison (then and now). I also collect a documentation of memorabilia from Indies era, can I ask you some pictures of your father's weapon collection? And if you allowed me, your father's album while he was in Indies. It would helped me a lot. Thanks and cheers!

From what I learned, Indonesia was a Official Dutch Colony since around 1800, before it used to belong to Dutch Companies, and privateers. ! Same counts for many Dutch former "Colonies". The VOC , a Dutch Trade Company, inhabited the Islands around 1600, and did a massive Genocide on the Banda Islands, with the help of Japanese Samurai ! Japan was surrounded by Western Colonization, the felt as if they were the only civilized Country in Asia. For example, England , Britain , France all tried to get their hands on China ! Japan had the Best navy of the world before WW 2, but their army outfit was really crap. However their Army had the Asian Fighting Spirit, Dead before dishonour...witch cannot be compared to Western Allied fighting Moral ! On the other hand, in this case , the Dutch had so much fighting experience in 2 ages local Jungle warfare ,I somehow expected them to do better. Before WW 2 broke out , the US Vice President together with some other people decided that , if USA would join the War, France , Britain , and Holland would lose many of their Colonies ! That is why USA supported the freedom of Indonesia, and for Gold Mining ,and Oil of course ! Dutch soldiers would rip of the Insignia of their Helmet, because the enemy bullet would ricochet easier without it ! Japs did not totally conquer West Indies, there still was a small Dutch part occupied....Merauke ! Greetings, and ThX for the nice Docu !
In 1816 the Dutch East Indies were established. Before that it was under control of the British who during the Napoleontic Wars invaded Java. And indeed, before that the VOC ran the place. Around 1600 Jan Pieterszoon Coen ordered the massacre of countless Banda people (you can call this a genocide) and Japanese were used for executions.
@@HistoryHustle The two Australian battalions that fought with the KNIL to defend Java arrived from the Middle-East without much of their equipment. These were experienced units that had fought Vichy French units in Syria. They fought a number of actions in Java but were hampered by a lack of equipment and poor coordination with KNIL units. The Australians were mopped up by the Japanese and spent the course of the war in captivity.
Those were the days of Kingdoms and Queendoms when plebeians died horribly death in far away lands to enrich their Kings and Queens and the Catholic Church. Dying at the ends of bamboo sharpened by the Javanese , the Dutch never want the wars and their humiliation to be known. Beheaded by the Japanese and then beheaded by the Javanese it was enough push for democracy to develop in Europe. Thus the end of Kings and Queens Catholic Monarchies.

You're welcome Piet Hein! I'm glad you liked it.
my grandfather from Tasmania who was aust 2/3 machine gun battallion in java and my understanding about the battle for java was very different than this.
The dutch army did not fight at all"
so i certainly wouldn't be making out the dutch army showed bravery in combat etc in the battle of java mate...i grew up with someone who was there when it happened.
Thanks for sharing!
Sad to hear guys, thanks for sharing.
Correct Fazole and thanks for the additional information. Mainly because of the extreme militarisation in the 30s it got to that point.
It was Tojo that changed those policies toward the enemy
But In World War 2 The Tried To Exterminate A Human Race So Does That Really Matter The Crossed A Line
@@nativegerry335 Which executive order did Tojo give out to cause this? I could not find any command to loot, massacre, or r4pe.

Lol
Interesting, thanks for sharing. Have you ever visited an 'Indies country'?
That is weird as Indiana means “land of the Indians” (Native Americans) and since the capital was founded as late as 1821, I think You make the mistake A certain Christhoper Colombus made when he tought he found the short route to India only to have re-discovered the Americas....

You're right, thanks for the correction.
The Dutch East Indies was no match against the Japanese Imperial Military. The Japanese Military was more advanced than the VOC / Dutch.

This country was annexed in 1910 and with close proximity to Japan and the absense of war many Japanese settled in Korea.
i loved your video :)

Would you elaborate a little more about the naval Java Sea Battle? Maybe a dedicated video?

The rotten kloot sac no doubt kept it for himself I also now possess 5 klewangs and 8 kris daggers, one from the 1800's. One of the klewangs is listed in the "Klewang", a hard cover book that I ordered from the Dutch military museum.

Around 1600 Jan Pieterszoon Coen ordered the massacre of countless Banda people (you can call this a genocide) and Japanese were used for executions.
the australians fought for some time but when they eventually contacted Australia Australia pulled them out
I read about that yes. I do know the Australians made a firm stand in the New Guinea campaign.

This is wrong on so many levels..
I don't get it.
