If you happen to have one of the Opinel that will lock while closed, the easy way to remove the ring is to lock it while folded and then pull the blade open. The spring will pop right off.

Is there a descendant of the original designer running the company or something? Cause far as I know the original maker has been dead for 100 or so years.
