I had my panels in parallel. Changing them into series-parallel really increased the amps into the batteries. My voltage into the charge controller was too low. Increasing the volts increased my amps. Thanks a ton for these very useful videos!

Outstanding informational video Again! I reviewed this video 4 months ago, but it didn't sink in until I actually had the solar panels set up. I am humbled by your knowledge and help.
Great videos. Which configuration would charge a battery fastest? For example, does wiring it with higher voltage but less amps result in slower charging due to lower amps, or does the higher voltage increase the speed of charging?
Basis what I have, connecting in series would charge the battery quick than connecting the panels in parallel, but make sure the your mppt is capable of handling
Hey, super Neuro divergent brain here. I was super confused at first on how to calculate your volts and amps when wiring in both parallel and series at the same time. But I realized that it’s a lot more simple than you explained it, or at least, that’s how it seems to me. Essentially, you just take the volts and amps of one singular solar panel times the number of sections that you have. It doesn’t matter how many panels are in each section. It only matters how many sections you have. If you have 6 sections, you times the Amps and volts by 6, if you have 4, you times each of them by 4
I was hoping you would address the function of the MPPT charge controller in how it coverts the surplus Volts into Amps and what the math is or how efficient the conversion is. Also, how the panels function when one panel is in shade and how that effects the output in V and A in Series vs Parallel.
@@EXPLORISTlife, I am very interested in this as well. No one has covered this info that I have found. Any update on the time frame for the video? Thanks so much

I have to say - as someone who didn't "get" electricity as an A-Level student (40 years ago!)... this particular video explains this topic really well! The best explanation I've seen so far! Brilliant! Thank you for explaining this so well! :-)
Your are incredibly helpful and this is by far the best video out there I've researched for helping to understand how to not only connect panels but in the best way. I'm about to put together my 6 panels to my bluetti and I'm actually excited because I have much more confidence now from your very clear tutorials. Thank you so much!!!
The only confusing thing about all of this is which one is best to charge your batteries? When living in the van, you’re using amps, and concerned with how many AH your bank has. Do you want to push the most amps into the battery, or the most volts into the battery? Nobody bothers to tell you which is actually preferred or which will charge your batteries to full faster. Could you please cover this?!
Howmuch power is pushed in the battery does not depend on the series or parallel configuration. Higher voltage (more in series) means lower Amps for fhe same total power, thus smaller gauge wires, but more expensive charge controllers as he explains. You can calculate the amount of current into the battery by the power of the solar array (as you saw in this video all configurations with 4 panels had 400W) by rhe nominal battery voltage. Cheers!
With series and mppt combo you get the max output of your panels with the added benefit of smaller wires. Higher voltage systems give you more of a return on investment. In my opinion.
@matthewjswider You want more Amps for charging! You only want your volts to be slightly higher than the battery you’re charging! If you have a 12v battery, you want a max of 13-14volts and between 3-40amps for charging, 3amp is slow charge, 10 amps is fast charge, and 40amps is rapid charge. Since most solar panels produce between 12-24volts, the charge controller sorts out the power differences and turns it into 13-14volts for charging. The closer you can get your solar panels to naturally putting out 14v and 10amps the less work your charge controller has to do and more efficient your system is
@Wayne-hs6gm I appreciate you wanting to help, but most of that is QUITE untrue. Please spend some more time in our solar basics playlists to learn more about system design so you can give more educated responses.

I really liked how you explained this, but I have just learned that there is a schematic to the panels which includes max. power, max. volts, short circuit current and open circuit voltage. When you were giving your diagram at the begging, which are you using. My 100 watt panels don’t have the same numbers that you used and I understand that can be important. None of my numbers were whole numbers and the multiplication didn’t work. Thank you!!
The information I needed in a clear understandable format. And points to my MPPT controller wanting/needing more voltage to operate more effectively. My challenge now becomes how to hook up panels in series that have the 2 pin SAE connectors. Without soldering wires or adding lots of adapters. Sure don't want to buy all new panels. Will run a scaled down experiment with a small number of adapters, testing the real world application of my series and parallel options before deciding on a final setup.
This is the best solar channel I have found.. Now I know how to maximize my victron 100/50 mppt.. Running 400 watts of solar to it nowbut about to add 600 watts more to it.. Thanks so much..
Thanks! :) Keep in mind that the "50" part of the 100/50 is referring to the charge controller OUTPUT amps. Not the input amps. 1000 amps pushed into a 12V battery bank will be somewhere in the 83 amps range; so the 100/50 will be a bit underpowered for that many watts.
EXPLORIST life - DIY Campers thanks i had that mixed up.. So it looks as if i can only hook up 700 watts of panels into it. Can You run 2 charge controllers on one 8 battery 12 v bank or would it be better to split the bank and controllers and have 2 separate solar arrays? thanks

Awesome.... the clarification and how you slowly break things down into parts, which then allow folks to truly comprehend the information, to then apply it, is wonderful..

Question ? So far I am following along and understand the math, what is series, parallel and series/parallel. What I don't know and asking is when it comes to charging the batteries, what is more important - Volts, amps or watts? I understand it is a combination of all three. But what is the most to be concerned about? (In a camper type setup. Me, it is overlanding out of the back of my truck) Thank you. I do fine your videos very informative.
Hey Buddy. I love the videos. Detailed explanations and you answer what viewers are going to ask lol. Your pace of talking is almost as calming as the BBC Planet Earth guy too lol. I did want to mention that I've tried your super helpful charge controller calculator. Thank you for creating it! I don't know if you have an amazon affiliate link for the recommended item, but no matter which item the calculator recommends the link seems to go to the same 75v/10A controller. Cheers
Ahh... the vendor changed up their product page. The link USED to go a page with all of the charge controllers on one page. I'll make an adjustment. Thanks for the heads up.
Hello, great video! I need some advice, I would like to know how much solar panel and how strong does my battery and converter have to be to run a submersible water pump. Also how strong dies the inverter have to be to work for a water pump. I only need it to run about an hour per day. Let me know please.
Thanks for th very helpful video. I have followed your video to installed my solar system on my van. I have installed 3 210 watts of solar panel parallel with Victron 150-70 TR smart solar controller with 50Amp dual pole breaker. now My breaker gets very hot and trips the breaker after a while. I have used 10 guage wires per your instruction. Any inputs? Thanks
I bought 5 175watt Newpowa solar panels, the ones you linked to from your website and I bought the victron 150-85 solar charger. I still am unsure which way to wire these in series or parallel. I live in Oklahoma and I will be putting them on top of my van. They will be charging ten 12v battle born batteries. Thanks again for the great videos.
That's a beautiful video you could and explains a lot it makes sense everything you said but my question to you is which will charge faster my battery my 12-volt Bank voltage amperage or amperage
Thank you I am setting up my system and will keep going back and watching this video as I set it up to make sure I do it right. For my 600w solar panels I am connecting it to a 60amp MPPT charge controller and to a 1500watt inverter, then to my lithium battery. I asked Rich Solar about it and they said I should have a good system. They told me because I was off grid that I didn't need an inline fuse going from the solar panels to the controller. Is this true or should I add one before connecting it together?
Hi there, great information. I have a question, I have 2 X 100 W panels connected in series going into a renogy rover 20amp charge controller. I am charging 12 volt lifepo4 batteries. I'm getting 35-40 volts and 9ish amps so around 350 Watts and this shouldn't be happening, I don't think the amps should be doubled so is this the MPPT increasing the current or do I have another issue?
This was perfectly clear! Finally someone who makes sense! Question, unrelated to watts, volts, and amps. Since CIGS solar panels outperform regular solar panels in the shade, I know that regular panels are not effective in the shade if done in series. Does the same apply to the CIGS panels or can I still put them in series and have them work as they normally would in the shade. Thank you for your time!
Thanks for the awesome video. I am looking at 4 x 200W solar with a 27W VoC rating per panel and 9.66A output. I have a 100/50 Victron MPPT and with this setup in Series would exceed by 8W ( ie:108W) - will this still operate OK in series without damaging the solar controller or should I use the series / parellel solution to obtian 54Voc and 19.32A. Love the Videos !!

Damaging that expensive charge controller was my fear. 100/50 like you showed. Now, the next chance I get, I have the knowledge to install the system correctly. Thank you again!
OMG!
You made everything so understandable and your wiring diagrams made it so easy to follow. I have gone to several sites and, while they were quite knowledgeable you made it so understandable. You are a great teacher. Thank you.
Hey, thanks so much! Cheers!
Thanks Nate! I enjoy your you repeat the info (I.e. V times A equals W) each time you go through a schematic. This helps me memorize!
Awesome! Glad it helped. Thanks for watching!
The best most concisely explained example on RUclips. Thank you so much, as this is exactly what I have been looking for.
Awesome! Glad it helped. Thanks for watching!
As one that has taught and instructed, having a interactive portion is a fantastic way of developing an understanding.
Keep up the great work.
Cheers Scott

I will not forget this vedio for sure. I have understood this thing which is next to impossible for me. And English is not my first language.10000000volts*500000amps thumbs up
Very well presented and for a novice has given really good info. thanks
Glad it was helpful!
I'm all thumbs when it comes to electric work, but your videos are so good that I feel ok to try doing it myself.
This is a great video! Your way of explaining the way(s) to wire the panels is by far the best I have seen! You explained the methods very very clearly. Thank you so much for making this outstanding video!
Awesome! Glad it helped. Thanks for watching!
This series is totally saving my beginner butt thank you soooomuch!

You're a good teacher. I scored 100%!
Thank you so much for what you do and for sharing I wish I had seen this video before I attempted to wire my solar array myself as I thought I was doing it right it was incorrectly wired for over a year and then suddenly last week at blew my 150 volt Flex Max 80 overcurrent I have the sense learn to rewire it correctly and it's done but now I have to figure out how to get my Flex Mac 80 repaired this video really helps cement the foundation of learning the math behind wiring thank you so very much
Thanks for explaining this in simple way. I won't forget it now
Happy to help!
I can't find the 12 wiring diagrams videos, you have some great videos very helpful
Quiz was very helpful, took it before and after I watched the video - 50% before and 100% after.
That's awesome! Glad it was helpful!
I'm just discovering this channel and it is so informative. So helpful. Thank you 👍🏼⭐
Awesome! Glad it's helpful. Thanks for watching!
Love it. This series is making the difference in my installation. thanks!!
Great to hear!
Question ? So far I am following along and understand the math, what is series, parallel and series/parallel. What I don't know and asking is when it comes to charging the batteries, what is more important - Volts, amps or watts? I understand it is a combination of all three. But what is the most to be concerned about? (In a camper type setup. Me, it is overlanding out of the back of my truck)
Thank you. I do fine your videos very informative.
Dude, the light bulb finally went off for me after watching this. Thank you.
You're a star! New to this, and I've learnt everything I wanted to learn in a few minutes. Will now follow you. Thank you very much!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks heaps for making this series currently fitting out a 2015 VW transporter with no prior knowledge and have found your videos really helpful.
Love the instructions and ease of understanding your video provides
Super helpful, thank you!! Your video was much more useful than any of the other sources I was able to find!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you bro good explane i know poor English but understand clearly thanks a lot God bless you from india bihar
Hello, great video! I need some advice, I would like to know how much solar panel and how strong does my battery and converter have to be to run a submersible water pump. Also how strong dies the inverter have to be to work for a water pump. I only need it to run about an hour per day. Let me know please.
You'll need to do a power audit. Here is a tutorial for that: ruclips.net/video/a406IxiU-Xg/видео.html Cheers!
Any inputs?
Thanks
Educating videos. May you kindly do a video on basics of wiring Protection kit.
Wiring those MCBs is a headache for me
Hey there I really like your videos...trying to get into solar for my rv but it's a lot of research when you never done it before.
Of course! Gotta start somewhere. 🙂
Thank you so much for sharing this great knowledge! I saw it as an ample opportunity I wouldn't toy with
I bought 5 175watt Newpowa solar panels, the ones you linked to from your website and I bought the victron 150-85 solar charger. I still am unsure which way to wire these in series or parallel. I live in Oklahoma and I will be putting them on top of my van. They will be charging ten 12v battle born batteries. Thanks again for the great videos.
Go with 5x in series for those. 👍👍
great series. I ordered my crimping kit.
Thank you so much, this is by far the best video about solar panels I ever watch
really thank you so much, you made me finally understand it 🙏🙏🙏
Well done.. you are an excellent educator!
Awesome! Glad it helped. Thanks for watching!
Your so phenomenal, i got to learn alot of things. Thanks alot, am your number one follower ✌️
Awesome, thank you!
This is awesome video. I just got a pair of panels to play with and trying to figure out how to wire. Thanks for the awesome explanation! :)
Thanks for putting this together, Seems my MPPT isnt living up to the specs and I am going to try and run my panels in a series and see how it does.
Took screenshots, super helpful, also have your website saved to my homescreen on my android for future perusal
Thank you for taking the time to help us.
Hey David Hayes, No problem! Glad it helped! :)
That's a beautiful video you could and explains a lot it makes sense everything you said but my question to you is which will charge faster my battery my 12-volt Bank voltage amperage or amperage
Great series! I started from learning what was a lug 😂!
Just found this video and oh man did I learn a lot. thanks you.
Excellent presentation
This was perfectly clear! Finally someone who makes sense!
Question, unrelated to watts, volts, and amps. Since CIGS solar panels outperform regular solar panels in the shade, I know that regular panels are not effective in the shade if done in series. Does the same apply to the CIGS panels or can I still put them in series and have them work as they normally would in the shade.
Thank you for your time!
Nothing would change.
Can I ask which method will charge my batteries faster. I could pull it apart but would appreciate some feedback. Thanks for the great vids
your awesome
thank you for such in depth, siple and clear explanations.... i am about toDIY 2000 or 3000 watt, 24v Solar Power System w/ LiFePO4 Batteries,,so needed your assistance... it was getting quiet overwhelming until i found you.. x bless x
thanks and grace
Hi Nate thanks for the hard work you put in the videos if I do the same connections you show on the 16 one hundred whats panels can i use the victron 150/60 or do I need a bigger controller? I’m in California thanks
