      I'll take that one step further. When people judge the greatness of individual players, they always talk about defense being half the game. They also look at all the aspects of a player individually and how they make him the basketball equivalent of baseball's "five tool" players. But that thinking leads people to rank players based on a concept of how much they'd like to match up with the guy on the court *rather than* the total impact of the player on wins. Steph's defense, while never mistaken for perimeter shut-down quality, is good for what they ask him to do as part of TEAM defense. As long as a team is five players, true greatness should be judged by impact on a compatible team, not imaginary one-on-one.

    I think he totally deserves to be on the Mt. Rushmore and he is currently ranked #4-5 on my Top 10 List, kinda depends what day you ask me. One describtion I like to give about why Steph is so good, is that he has the most synergistic and complementary skill set I've ever seen. It's like god just gave him every single skill set it needs to enhance his shooting, and made him elite level. Accuracy, quick release, incredible handling, great balance, can take touch well, good pace, outstanding layup package, amazing passing, and conditioning that is probably unmatched.
    If you think about it, EVERY single skills of his is complementing his presence and magnificence of being the GOAT shooter.
    All of this leads to a player that actively influences and dictates the offense even when he doesn't have the ball, that's why for me personally, he still counts as a PG.
    The greatest ever, to be precise.

      @lynchone117 11 месяцев назад +10

      Hey bennysnickers
      I lov what you pointed out here about Steph and I agree with you! Now check out what I'm saying about Steph vs Magic, and let me know what you think?
      Here's the counter argument:
      Steph is much better scorer than Magic.
      Magic needed the help of a top 3 all time player (Kareem) for all 5 of his rings, while Steph won multiple rings without another top 75 player. Magic inherited a great team, Steph built a dynasty out of a bad side. Lakers had 3 no.1 picks (Kareem, Magic, worthy) and a no.4 pick (Scott), GS have a mid lottery, late lottery and 2nd round picks as its core. The magic version of a PG is now irrelevant largely bcs of Steph. In today's game he'd only be marginally better than Ben Simmons. Minus his defense.
      Notes1:
      He built a warriors dynasty out of nothing! With no top draft picks. And won two championships without a top 75 player.
      Notes2:
      If Curry had a Kareem type big, he'd easily surpass Magic's assists average. If Curry wasn't always the best shooter on the floor, he'd be forced to pass more. If we're going to compare a pass first PG best stats (assists), we have to compare a shoot first PG's best stats (scoring).
      Magic had zero gravity because Kareem was the real threat. Magic was amazing, but Kareem was even better. Kareem and Magic are both top 10 of all time players. Curry's best teammate was KD, for only 3 years, and KD isn't even top 10 of all time. Curry's next best teammate isn't even in the top 75 of all time.
      Also its important to note that Steph avg 9.0 Asst per game. Right before Steve Kerr became Coach.

    • @amirampeled
      @amirampeled 11 месяцев назад

      @@lynchone117 a lot of good points, except for the Magic Simmons comparison. That was disrespectful. But you're missing the whole picture. If you're arguing who's the best offensive player, than you'd be right. Curry is a better offensive player than Magic. I'd argue he's the GOAT offensive player. But Magic advantage in defense overtakes here. Magic, as a rookie, played center in a game 7 finals to win a chip, practically a game winner and FMVP.
      A few other points, teammates and championship don't matter as much in GOAT debates as individual accolades like MVPs, FMVPs and such. In a team perspective, curry and Durant is not such a huge underdog to Magic and Kareem. And pick numbers have nothing to do with strength of players, just means GS did a better job drafting. And even though Klay and Dray didn't make the top 75, they are arguably better than some players there, Klay definitely should have made it in.
      Now saying Curry built GS is a huge stretch. That is more Kerr and Bob Mayers than Curry. Just like Phil gets a lot of credit for Kobe and Jordan's rings.
      Having said all that they ARE close. I mean they are both top 10 and should be the undisputed top two PGs.

And guys bring up that narrative every time like magic played center every time ,playoffs,reg.season games. That was just one game , so after the game he dominated so now all of a sudden hes this great defender,BS don't even insult my intelligence! Magic inherited a dynasty he was born with great Lakers teammates(HOFers) and had the best player at center too.
      Next you win championships with teammates period, Jordan is the only person I know of that won two of his chips without an all star player in 91 and 98.

Its Steph's team and it has been since that faithful day at MSG 54point outing! Once again like Kerr said you win with, all time great players and superstars those where his words not mine!

    The problem with this argument is that the modern NBA has virtually erased the lines between positions. A 6'11'' "five" led the NBA champions and was third in the league in assists last season. A 7'0" "four" has MADE more three-pointers in his career than Larry Bird ATTEMPTED. In 1980s/1990s parlance, Curry would be a two, no question; he has averaged 6.5 assists for his career, one more per game than Michael Jordan, whom no one would mistake for a point guard. He's the only person in the top 10 under 6'6, so per in/lb he's probably the GOAT. 3. Unlike everyone else in the top 10, Curry has always been an underdog without any glaring gifts or talents his whole life. He basically dragged himself and his teams to the top through sheer will alone by playing the game his way. Add all this up, plus his humility, leadership, and tenacity, Curry is definitely someone that deserves to be looked up to and praised. IMO the old way of playing basketball, positioning of players, is over. It’s difficult to say who is best at what position when in this era, it’s about position-less basketball. If you want to go by labeling players to a specific position, then yes Magic is the man.
    But in current basketball, players like Steph are combo guards that revolutionized the game. Even the all star game is now voted in as “back court front count” rather then the old way of PG, SG, SF, PF, C
    Steph has changed an entire generation of how the game is played.

      In his time Magic was the best, or maybe is still the best player in passing of all time. He was an outstanding talent.
      But he never did more then change the playstyle of his role. Curry changed the way basketball works. The splash brother era changed everything. The defence and offense of teams, the positions, the strategy.

    • @split_head_776
      @split_head_776 16 дней назад +1

      @@Dermi_Sky I lean Steph for several reasons. Magic inherited a championship team day 1. Steph had to work on his game/health while the team figured itself out and drafted pieces. Magic had great players his entire career, in a relatively weak West. The West has been strong Steph's entire career. Not only that, he has seen several iterations of this Warriors team and has won every time. If someone thinks 3 years of KD equals 10 years of Kareem/Worthy, then good for them. Steph won with Harrison Barnes, KD, and Wiggins interchangeably. Not only do I think his offense peaks higher, but his team elevation, despite being the weaker passer, clears. Put Steph anywhere, and it just breaks the opposing defense. Klay and Draymond made careers from Steph's gravity, and thats hardly an insult. Imagine every dynasty wingman. You get names like Pippen/Rodman, Havlicek/Jones, Kareem/Magic/Worthy, Ginobli/Parker, Shaq/Kobe/Fisher. A lot of the top 10 players (Kobe, Shaq, Kareem, Magic) played together. Steph won with Wiggins and Iguodola as his #2 players. I know the media had their narrative, but he also was the best player when KD was there. The 15 finalsMVP was a disgusting joke. The system only exists because of Steph, and any other alltime great would not flourish with Klay and Draymond as the key pieces. Even then, with his key pieces noticeably regressed, he still won in 22. Steph should be lumped together with players who overcame adversity and/or won in several different settings. Kobe, Duncan, Hakeem are his real comps, not Magic (who honestly gets overrated for 'saving' the league). I wont be delusional and say he's MJ/LeBron level, but every other player all time is free game. Those 2 were not so far away from Steph offensively, but also great defensively. They, just like Steph, break the game just by existing. Honestly, Shaq deserves a lot of credit for being a game breaker as well

    Sorry I'm back! I'm reading the comments and they turned my thoughts to the question of what makes you great or special. My answer was being able to do something like no one else can! Steph's overall basketball skills are amazing but his ability to shoot the basketball in a game built around shooting the basketball are on a level by themselves! Clearly backed up by his shooting numbers and percentages and the eye test! We all saw the 2022 All Star Game! No one else in the world is shooting from those distances, while making 16 and turning around from 36 feet! Best yet is 105 threes in a row! No one else in the world ever...if you disagree post the video! Lastly breaking the three point record in nearly half the amount of games and by the time he is done maybe putting the number out of reach...but records are meant to be broken...but it's going to be awhile and if the game shifts anywhere near back to the way it was...Impossible! Can Magic say anything like that? #unanimous30

    The Tim Duncan Spurs made the high ball movement, outside shooting offense feasible and proved it works in the NBA. THAT opened the door for Steph -- he's a product of Pop's system that Kerr brought to the Warriors. Doesn't mean he's not the greatest shooter ever, but he didn't single-handled reinvented the wheel.
    Also he doesn't really play defense much? Jordan and Kobe were DPOY winners and Magic was coming back hard on D every time.
    i don't mean to diminish Steph -- he is a great player, but we have to look a bit deeper than just pure scoring, because if that's the measure he's only 5th over the last 10 years (and James Harden is no1 -- that guy is on nobody's Mt Rushmore).

    To me, if he’s in your all time starting lineup then he’s top 5 or top 4. The thing that makes him the best pg ever is he’s the most impactful player on the court no matter the lineup you choose. Pick any 4 of the greats, he’s making them at minimum 10-25% better than they already are based on his gravity alone. And if you decide to ignore him for the others, he’s literally capable of scoring 15-20 points in a couple minutes. He just breaks the game, he’s that good.

    Sure, Magic might be the Point guard GOAT because of his unique size and skill for the position, but he played to his strengths and did not change the game for those of lesser physical characteristics. Curry, on the other hand, lacks the size and skill for the position,¿that Magic's era required, but the skill set now required makes being a Curry-type point guard more possiible for more players of his size. Magic played the position the best a it could have been played in his era, but Curry revolutionized every facet of the game during his era...and beyond. Bottom line: Magic could not have had the success he had if he played on the current Dubs teams, and Curry could not have had the success he is having if he played on Magic's Lakers teams. I'm a Steph Curry Fan. Steph is way more than a PG, but the PG GOAT is Magic Johnson hands down!!.

    Magic Johnson is the greatest point guard I've ever seen play the game. The only obvious things that Curry was better at was shooting and ball handling.
