  • Old Andado Station is an historic homestead that used to operate as a cattle station at the edge of the Simpson Desert, in Australia's Northern Territory. Comprising a number of outbuildings, including a historic meat house and a saddle shop, the pastoral property is the only remaining homestead of its kind in Australia. Every year, Old Andado Station sees hundreds of visitors who come to the region to cross the red sand Simpson Desert, enjoy off-roading adventures on the world famous Bins Track, and get a true taste of life in the Australian outback. The Old Andado homestead has also served as a base for Parks and Wildlife crews, who travel to the area to study the Mac Clark Acacia Peuce Reserve's abundant wildlife.
The history of Andado Station dates back to 1910, when the homestead consisted of little more than a crude shelter made of timber and cloth. The shelter was later replaced by a mud-brick hut, and in 1955, a new homestead was built. This newer building is the homestead we see today and serves as a poignant reminder of what life was like was without modern amenities such as hot running water, electricity, air conditioning and telephones.
1972 saw the restoration of the homestead into a tourist destination operated by Tjauritchi Wanda Tours Pty Ltd, a corporation formed by then owner H. Overton and his business partners Molly and Malcolm Clark. The Clarks then owned the homestead outright from 1969 until the 1980s, when the family was forced to de-stock under the threat of brucellosis and tuberculosis. The homestead was eventually sold at a pittance, but Molly Clark succeeded in securing a crown lease over 45 square kilometres of land around the homestead. Molly continued to live at Old Andado until 2008, when she fell ill and was forced to move to Alice Springs. She passed in 2012, after founding the National Pioneer women's Hall of Fame in Alice Springs.
Today, Old Andado Station is maintained by a group of passionate volunteer caretakers known as the Friends of Old Andado Incorporated. Much of the homestead's original construction and way of life has been preserved - from its corrugated iron roofs to its cement floors, which were poured over ash and fat. Until the 1970s, there was no power; light was supplied by kerosene lanterns. And until the 1980s, when a satellite phone tower was installed in Alice Springs, the only method of communication - besides a camel drawn mail cart - was a radio telephone. Future plans for the Old Andado homestead include the installation of a soar power system and 24-hour electricity.

I was still working at New Andado station for Donny Costelo when Molly Clark was still living at Old Andado station, she was a tough pioneer and an Australian outback legend , she was always 2 steps ahead of you when you thought you were infront and always was welcoming.
    RIP Molly

Needs all this history put into a book. If this man passes a lot of this knowledge will be lost. Also needs someone young put on as a caretaker.
Well done video with so much of our heritage from the very early times. Our mother born in 1923 shared what us boys what we called grandpa story's.

This was fantastic, My 4wding is just this kind pf touring with the destination and story at the end. There is nothing better than going to places like this and the gentleman who showed you around is a story in himself. His eyes tell a great journey he has lived. Another place for a story you might like is Talem Town in Sth Australia where a fellow Peter Squires over 30 years has built an old town from original buildings he has transported to there to show some history.

You took me back in time mate. That is exactly how our old south african folks used to live in the days on the farms. I am sure there are still some of those houses in the karoo and kalahari.

Having just visited old andado I was amazed to see the homestead.
The utube video shows heaps of features and how things were back then.
Great insight as to lots of things not seen on such a short visit.

    Well worth the visit.

@@AlloffroadAu That's right - it's abandoned now Cobby has left - he left a notice on the door dated 14 May 2018 that told him he needed to finish up as caretaker. We went there with a group from Moon Tours and stayed overnight in the campgrounds - the toilets and other facilities are locked/not working but the house is open. We had Ron Moon with us who was telling us stories of his meetings with Molly and Cobby. Lots of dust and some rain damage - very sad as it is one of a kind. I was heartened to see many of the things in your video were still there last month. Amazing one of kind place - such a shame.

very sad, unfortunately Australia is horrible in preserving indigenous and early settlers history it's such a shame. I have been at Old Andado a few times and it always sets me back a century walking trough it.

@@AlloffroadAu Hey, just letting you know we have been back to Old Andado this year on our way accross the Madigan Line and the Simpson Desert. Old Andado now has a full-time caretaker - the place looks just the same and is now being looked after. One of my favourite places to visit. Here's the link if you're interested - about the one minute mark is Old Andado now and a bit of historic footage 🙂 ruclips.net/video/IFHYRLFlgHM/видео.html

A credit to travellers who visit this area. We visited is a month ago in 2021 and the caretaker had been evicted, but the station was exactly the same and welcomed visitors with even with showers. Unbelievably the house was exactly the same.
