Hi! This is such a sweet idea! And you look faboulous in that dress 🎉 I watch your sewing channel because i‘m upcycling a lot myself. But now there is Dolly and you went to Dollywood! I live in Europe and the first time I learnt about Dollywood was through a podcast about her. Very good podcast, I think. And this inspired me to write a song dedicated to her. I paired the finished song with footage of me playing in the countryside around Berlin on my 42nd birthday. Dolly Parton is a great human being, and her songs are…! Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic. Thanks for this vlog! Greetings 🎉🎉🎉!!!!!!!!

I'm far from an expert, but I think with darts it's the shape of them. Triangular darts will want to be points because of the straight sides, whereas if the bodice has the equivalent amount taken out in a princess seam (similar to the pattern to your second bodice), it would end up being more of a curved chunk that gets removed and narrows to the point in a different way and therefore it never ends in points on the finished seam because of how it tapers to the fullest part of the bust. (Not sure if that makes sense.)
Also, grain. It's been a while since I've done any fitted bodices but years ago I made some Victorian-style corsets and even with each panel being straight on the grain, the panels had enough curve in their shaping such that the edges by the seams were often effectively on the bias, so then that lies nicer in a curve without coming to any weird points... so in that first 80s bodice pattern if the center front line was straight on the grain and the one leg of each of those big triangular darts was parallel to it, I bet that also makes for a point since the other leg would be on a bias and therefore the grains might be fighting? I could be wrong, though.
Anyway, super cute end result, I have a few meters of a turquoise gingham cotton I'd gotten to make a tablecloth out of that I'm now eyeballing for a dress, lol...

That would make sense, I never thought about the direction of the fabric playing a part, thanks!

My *cure* for weird smelling fabric (and paper) is using the lysol laundry disinfectant. Has effectively removed tobacco, urine, and mold smells from fabric even when ironing.

Bodice darts - don't sew totally straight, but near the tip, curve the sewing line *just a tad* toward the body. Does that make sense?

What sewing machine do you use and how do you keep it from getting jammed? I got a singer when I was like 10, I'm 19 now, and I can never get more than like 3 stiches in before it jams 😢 I have barely used it for years because of this and am wondering if I should just get a new one at this point but I don't know which ones are best.

I have a Janome, I sometimes have issues with jamming, I would recommend getting some sewing machine oil and a small cleaning brush. I find that if I do some really careful detailing, and oil all the moving parts, replace the needle, and double check that the machine is threaded correctly it usually solves my problems! It’s sort of like a tune-up! Hope this helps!

The right size needle for the fabric is helpful. Try to use thread from the same spool in your bobbin to sew with. But it just might be needle size. That's usually been my problem, so I just have to practice needle to fabric until I get it right! I hope that helps...🙃
