  • We have beef in the freezer again! A local farmer that we buy from had another cow come available. This is a smaller cow than you would be thinking and may not even be a breed that you want. BUT this works for us in all areas. Taste is great. Amount of beef fits great into our freezer plans
    Thank you for taking the time to watch our video. We are attempting to show you that we really have no idea what we are doing but that we are TRYING!

    It seems you ignored the yield percentage which is apparently about 60% of the hanging weight. The 257 pounds hanging would yield 154.2 pounds for a net cost of $4.33/pound. Still a good deal and better beef than you would get from a grocery store feedlot animal.

    • @PrattFamilyHomestead

      I see. I should weigh how much is actually in my freezer and not go off the hanging weight. Makes sense.

    It’s so awesome to look in your freezer and see all that yummy meat you raised/bought. It’s so rewarding.
    That jersey meat will be so yummy. Right now we are raising two jersey steers that we’ve had since they were in on the bottle. We still have another year or so before they are ready. Can’t wait to see you they turn out.
    Thanks for sharing your beef haul. Take care, see ya :)

    I hope the power company doesn’t have issues keeping the power on. One or two days without electricity could destroy the freezer contents.

    We usually raise holsteins for our beef. Very easy to raise as they are very docile. We bred and raised Angus before and they were much harder to deal with. We personally have not noticed much difference in taste. We believe it's more what they eat than what breed they are.

  • @lilbitatatime3763
    @lilbitatatime3763 5 лет назад +1

    Sounds like a sweet deal to me and I bet the taste is better than store bought. It's about $4-4.5 per lb for ground beef at the local market that's why we buy in bulk through a warehouse club, bring it home and portion it out. Three freezers, that's a whole lotta meat. Do you have a generator if you loose electricity? 👍

    I did not see any packages of bones. They make great beef broth and it so easy to can. To get a better cost per pound you need to weigh the the bring home meat then figure the cost per pound. There is a percentage of lost from hanging weigh to bring home weigh, but still that is a good buy.

    • @PrattFamilyHomestead
      @PrattFamilyHomestead  5 лет назад +1

    If I were to try this, what do I do to ensure the meat lasts for a long time? Vacuum seal?

    • @PrattFamilyHomestead
      @PrattFamilyHomestead  Год назад

      Yes, this all comes vacuum sealed from the processor. Vacuum sealing is a great way to keep meat in the freezer as it helps to keep freezer burn off. Canning meat is another great way to preserve meat for longer time frames.

  • @ericb9345
    @ericb9345 5 лет назад

    It’s a good size. Hard for many families to manage a 1k plus hanging weight cow. Also, when you say hanging weight, is it after it’s split? Or while the cape is still on?

    • @PrattFamilyHomestead
      @PrattFamilyHomestead  5 лет назад

      If I had to guess, I would assume before split. If this butcher does it the same for cows as they do for the pigs we take in ....... hanging weight is head off, skin off, innards out. So I assume the same for a cow?? But now you have me wondering about orders that are specifically for a half an animal .... if they split and weight ... but as that would be more time consuming .. I would think they weigh whole.

  • @Smallpotato1965
    @Smallpotato1965 4 года назад

    hanging weight is not what you get from the butcher, because the butcher will debone the meat (you will get some as soup bones, but not all). On average, think between 70 and 75 percent of the hanging weight. So your hanging weight was 257 pounds. Seventy percent of that is 180 pounds, which comes down to 3,70 dollar per pound, which is still a great deal

    • @PrattFamilyHomestead
      @PrattFamilyHomestead  4 года назад

  • @moosepasco5208
    @moosepasco5208 5 лет назад +1

    So what was the final weight and not the hanging weight? Fair comparison would be final weight (about 30-40% less of hanging weight) and price it that way. Probably closer to $4.50 to $5 a lb. Still a deal and more control of what it was fed and how it was raised.

    • @PrattFamilyHomestead
      @PrattFamilyHomestead  5 лет назад +1

      Yes! I am gonna do a follow up video I think very soon. More of what I have been reading suggests more like 60% less. but I am going to try to get that figured out before to much of it disappears for dinner :) Thank you!

    • @PrattFamilyHomestead
      @PrattFamilyHomestead  5 лет назад

      I will be putting out a video on this soon! "they say" generally speaking you could lose up to 60%. But, bones do count for some of it ... to a degree. I mean when you buy a t-bone ... your paying for that bone as well.So I am trying to get it laid out ...... correctly ..... before putting out the video.

    I hope the butcher didn't throw it away because it would make me sad to hear good food go to waste

      Liver and tounge we get back. Or we did last year. I think they went with the other half this year? As for the rest I can't tell you. And of course when you take an animale to the butcher, your at that butchers mercy as far as what you get back. Now, to be honest, I will try ANYTHING (almost) but most of what you listed does not sound that great to me :)

    How do you find a farmer that is selling and know that it is good? Can you recommend the farmer you use? Would be interested in pork and chickens to

    • @PrattFamilyHomestead
      @PrattFamilyHomestead  4 года назад

      The farmer we use for beef is family of people we know. So it was kinda word of mouth. I think for beef or anything else, that it is fine to contact a farmer, ask 1000 questions. If you think your sold then ask to come take a look at their operation. No need to argue with them, if you like what they do then GREAT! Go with them. IF you don't, say "no thanks" and check in on the next farmer.
      Pork, we may have some available soon. We have 2 pigs we have been slowly growing out on grains (barely, sunflowers, oats, alfalfa pellets, and just now mixing in cracked corn) but NOT commercial feed. All "grains" are NOT organic and NOT non-gmo. If interested please email us. Not promising anything ... and prices are gonna be elevated since we have been feeding them about a year now and they need to grow more.
      Chickens. We are planning a spring batch. Samething. Email for some info. This entire spring batch will be sold, we will not be keeping any ourselves. Chickens are free range as much as we can. They are NOT cooped up and crowded in. We have some reserved already, but looking to maybe do a total of about 50 - 75 birds in the spring.
