The fact the Jesus rose from the dead after they died doesn't change the fact. Calvary was for us and them

It would be nice if you could put the verses in both English and Greek on the screen. Thank you for the teaching

The spirit is not anything conscious. It is the breath of life--air, which comes from the Hebrew terms "Ruach' and "Pneuma". That's where we get the term "Pneumothorax" (Air in the lung). The spirit returns to God--yes--the breath of life. "We would rather be absent from the body and present with Lord" and "To live is Christ and to die is gain" = The apostle Paul just means if you take time out of the picture that is exactly what happens. The only One that has immortality is Jesus Christ. We (People) put on immortality at the resurrection--the second coming of Jesus Christ. When we die we die completely---that's what is so great about the foundation of Christian faith, the resurrection. Paul was trying to bring comfort to the people in Thessalonica about their loved ones who had died as you have mentioned here. It would have been easier for Paul to say, "Your loved one is in heaven with Jesus". Of course, that is not what Paul said. At death, a person's consciousness does not go to be with Jesus while the body stays in the grave. The entire person is dead. That didn't make sense as a boy growing up and it still doesn't because this is not what happens. Jesus Himself said in John 5:28: "Don't be amazed, but the time is coming in which all in the graves will hear My voice and come out". Jesus is not saying "All in the graves will hear My voice and connect the consciousness that they are already experiencing with Me in heaven with their new body". I was raised in many denominations in Christianity, and this topic always confused me. I did my own research with the Bible and other sources and through my fellowship with my father. When my father was taking his last few breaths, he said "Richard--I will see you when I wake up at the resurrection--a twinkling of an eye". We use terms like "Passed" (The most recent one), "Passed away" and "Passed on", etc. We are completely dead. No one goes anywhere at death. My statement "No one goes anywhere at death" always creates deep emotions in people because we are conditioned to think with time and emotion. Consider that time is not a factor. The notion that a person is in heaven with Jesus already and then at some point gets a new body at the resurrection is a watered-down resurrection. What purpose is there for a resurrection if I'm already in heaven with Jesus--who cares about going to get a new body? To me, this notion is irreverent to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Jesus said, "I commend my spirit". He wasn't saying He was going to heaven. He was saying that He was about to die--stop breathing. The spirit (Breath of air-life) goes back to God. People often believe Jesus was meaning that the spirit is something conscious. It's not. Remember where Jesus spent the weekend---in the grave and was resurrected on the third day--He was completely dead in the grave. How could His consciousness (Incorrectly defined as the spirit) return to God if He went to the grave over the weekend? He defeated the grave and we will do the same. In my daily walk and fellowship, I hear very little about the power of the resurrection. The Lord Jesus Christ suffered on the cross on my behalf. How great! And He conquered the grave so that one day I will be resurrected to be with Him forever. On another note, the concept of heaven is interesting. I think people forget that heaven is actually on earth according to the Bible. We will have jobs to do as we worship the Lord Jesus Christ. The notion of heaven being in the clouds doesn't seem appealing to me. I chase storms as a hobby, and the notion of floating from one cloud to the next doesn't seem exciting even to me.
