  • Apple Silicon's dominance is back, with the M3 family of chips and new MacBook Pros. From the base M3 to the beastly M3 Max, we'll explore what these chips mean for you as a developer, and I show Aivars how his own project gets a little extra help from the new chips.

It is not build times as they are incremental in real life. What matters is test execution time, and the 16 core m3 max will be able to run more tests concurrently and run them faster. That would be a good video to do.

@@dotinsideacircle in my experience builds only scale with files changed and are under 10 seconds on an m1 let alone m3. Tests on the other hand scale with project size and grow indefinitely. Certainly we want fast builds, but making tests run faster will save more time per day and will justify an upgrade faster.

Love this collab. Love both your channels. Aivars is so right, every second spent waiting for a build to finish is a second that might lead to getting distracted by tik tok or youtube. Multiplied by dozens and dozens of times a day... Very few of us are 10x devs who can just focus non-stop for 8hrs straight. I'm still on an M1 Air and I'm so tired of waiting for my machine to do things. Xcode only gets worse and worse each year. I just want to get the best machine available and not deal with compromises anymore. Would have gone with the M3 Pro chip but they nerfed it this year so.. And for the price of a refurb M2 Max I'd rather just pony up a bit more cash for the M3M. Bigger jump in performance. It'll last longer. My computing needs only grow each year it never gets less. For those just starting out, get an M2 Pro refurb, build your skills, get some jobs under your belt, stash away the cash, upgrade when M5 Max comes out.

If you're willing to pay £4k for a MacBook Pro with M3 Max, you might as well go all the way to a £6k MacBook Pro with M3 Max, 4TB and 128Gb of memory, you'll be able to run llama 70b locally, £6k is a lot of money but amazing value for running LLMs locally, an extra £2k to allow it is really good value.

I understand build speed on Xcode being a good benchmark for some developers. But not for me. I am a Java server side developer and builds are fast and easy, that isn't the issue or the wanting of statistics for my environment. So all these videos that benchmark build speed is not a developer test to me. I would love to see one that runs a Java Spring Framework server side with a React.js front end, MySQL database running in Docker, MySQLServerAdmin, Teams, Terminal window connected to remote server tailing logs. Browser with front end UI running. How does that in terms of Ram, in terms of temperatures. My issue with my MacBook Pro 2018 is that it can get to 200 degrees Fahrenheit and I have to have an app that forces the fans to run 100% all the time.

It was great to see that your guest actually knew what the M3 base MacBook Pro 14 is targeted at. So many people are confused and misunderstand that it is a replacement for the previous MacBook Pro 13, which was principally a MacBook Air with a fan and a few other fantasy stuff. I always say: semi-pros buy the M3 Pro, and professionals buy the M3 Max. Leave the M3 base for students, enterprise, businesses and casual use.
    Great stuff as usual.

Interesting video - though as an iOS engineer, I think it would have been a bit more useful if you took an open source app and wrote a script to tweak and then compile the app after modifying layer n of its architecture, then layer n+1 etc.
Then we could have an idea what incremental builds are like across all the machines, Though I guess this would vary alot from project to project depending on how well it is structure. For non-CI builds I would be surprised if I compile from scratch more than once a month.

Nice to see fellow Latvian on your channel. I was going to buy M3 Max (just for fun, not really need it), but at the end will buy Dell XPS 17 9730, need it for my new project for Microsoft Business Central development. You can use it (MBC) on Mac as well, but can't do development of it on Mac. Also Windows machine will be needed soon for my smart home programming (Siemens LOGO! PLC), that as well can't be done on Mac. So after 5 years, buying Windows machine, never thought it will happen...

Normally it isn’t only build time, whether that’s the project or tests.. i have multiple microservices project running at same time sometimes, docker browser and all the things.. On this scenario i was experiencing really bad performance and i had to see what i can close, or sometimes even restart the machine. This was on m1 Pro 16gb. So even 32 i think would not be enough and those tests cannot picture real world scenario completely.

  • @persona2293

I will just go with base m3 and 16(or 24?) RAM, and 512GB storage. Most devs who have to use Mac is mainly due to XCode. And from your videos, I could go "lazy programming" while waiting for build times.

I am not sure if this is a generaly thing these days (to build code locally), since things like Github actions etc generally simplifies all those things.
I would say running multiple docker containers locally for multiple apps along with a database/cache/kafka might be more realistic for an enterprise application (if running locally)
Also, yes saving build time on one app by 5 sec could be huge saving if you have to build 50 of those apps. For a single app not so much.

Hi, i’m not into coding but i’m looking for a new laptop so here i am. I know the new Mac’s are very fast but this performance really matters? I don’t know how coding works but let’s take video editing as example. You edit a video for 3 hours then you spend 20 minutes to export. The newer model it’s going to take 10 minutes to export the same video so even with the newer model being twice as fast, at the end of the day you only finish your work 10 minutes faster. Just saying. Are benchmarks relevant for the daily use since you only use your laptop at full power for 10% of the time so the amount of time saved it’s not making a significant difference?

    • @HeangKoing

The M3 (base) you can't get 18GB. It's 16GB. If you are going to do this you might as well pick up an M3 Pro with 18GB IMO. More ports and another fan. Or if you can get a good deal on an M2 Pro with 16/1TB go for that. They are all great machines. I'm on a base MBP14 16/512 and it's still awesome. Yes other machines are faster but for my needs it doesn't matter.

    • @AZisk
      @AZisk  8 месяцев назад +1

I'd have to agree with @fbkensarhd5279 here. While the base model M3 is a good machine overall, if you're going to plan to keep it for a long time, you'll find out that you'll eventually run out of computing capacity simply because of the low RAM. It's a great starter machine if you have the $1600, and then also have another $1600 a year from now for another machine.

There's not much love for the entry-level M3 MBP, is there? I think that's a bit unfair. I understand that for experienced, professional developers the M3 Pro and M3 Max machines offer advantages that might be important to them. But let's not forget that the entry-level machine did complete the tasks, it just took longer. For a beginner developer, a student or someone who's severely budget-constrained, the lower cost of that computer would give them a machine that can do the job (more slowly) and at a lower cost. These are people for whom time is not yet money....
