    All SGs, whether Gibson or Epiphone, should come with an Australian school uniform.

    Best trick on balance is a leather strap with a rough inside. The friction on your shoulder is enough to stop the neck-dive.

      actually its to do like Iommi and relocate the strap button to the top horn tip. works great.

    As for neck dive just get a thick leather strap with a raw inner surface much like bass players use. Eliminates neck dive right fast. Also putting a heavy trim like a bigsby on it helps.

    Found one at a pawn shop and paid just over $100...Absolutely great sound and feel. I taped a weight to the strap to counter the neck dive. I play it lower to counter the fatigue from stretching your arm. Also had to level a couple of frets. I was going to install new electronics but it's almost pointless since it sounds so good. Thanks for the demo!

      I got one at a pawnshop for 80 bucks, and I feel its one of the best guitars I have played, which is crazy! I`ve had Gibson`s, and I really like this guitar.

    I’ve noticed almost all epiphone SGs with wood finish have the half pick guard like yours but mine has the full puck guard. The only other epiphone SGs I’ve seen with the full pick guard are the plastic coated looking ones. I personally like the full pick guard look so I’m glad I have this one.

  • @kenjones5138
    @kenjones5138 6 лет назад +1

    I bought the Epi G400 '61 version of the '61Gibson SG from musicians friend for about 600 bucks in '06. Has the Heritage Cherry finish, wish it had the mat finish on the neck. The neck joint really IS frail and will break because of the short tenon. It WILL nose dive on ya so you have to hold the thing so you're always keeping a slight "up" pressure with your left arm which will tire you out. The bridge pickup is a screamer but a little eq will take that out. My Gibson SG Goth , is more balanced, the tenon is longer and stronger, doesn't nose dive but can't get the setup low enough. G400 almost frets itself. Damn fine guitar, great finish,glad it doesn't have those god-awful green tuners, and plays fantastic.

  • @LevonsWound
    @LevonsWound 7 лет назад +1

    nice review, I chose to buy the Epi SQ Special instead of the Epi G400 because i prefer a master volume and master tone. I really like fact the SG special is light weight as i play only at home in the seated position. I also installed a tusk nut ($10), grover tuners ($70) and Gibson Classic 57/57 Plus pick ups ($200) and the guitar screams. I dont have to worry if I ding or scratch the guitar. I've been playing and collecting guitar for over 40 years and my Epi SG is my go-to guitar that i play every day. Also, I completely agree with you regarding the G400 neck positioned about 2 inches to the left. I prefer function over form and like you, felt the the G400 neck position was a bit awkward. Thanks again for your review and all the best in 2017.

    These are awesome. I just got a Gibson SG STD. On CL for $400. Unbelievable deal. I had been cracked and glued at the headstock, but at $400 you just can't beat it. And angled Gibson Headstocks are prone to break anyway...

  • @larrydrozd2740
    @larrydrozd2740 7 лет назад

    I own one and play it. They are neck heavy...but that can be fixed. One: Schaller makes a really nice set of keystone style tuners with the plastic keys. They are lighter than the metals keyed grovers. Yes, it does make that much of a difference! it's in the leverage.Two: Move the strap button to the BACK of the upper horn, not the tip!! This will keep it laying on your body correctly and it really changes the balance in the right way. Try it...you won't be disappointed.

      How would it affect quality? American are the only ones who know how to sand wood? It’s stupid to spend the money for an American made guitar. All you’re paying fir is the higher taxes that the company must endure by existing in America. I don’t need it.

      Tom Spallone id agree and disagree. There are very high quality custom shops around various parts of the world but these guitars (ephiphone) and price points are designed to cut certain corners to keep costs down. So if I wanted an imported Luteria Arda guitar that is badass I’d have to pay import costs and it would be way more expensive than say a Kiesel or Suhr guitar and they both play and feel amazing, better than the mass built imports that are around the same price

    The lead guitarist in my first-ever rock band 40 plus years ago had one
    So far sentimental reasons I had to bring one into my collection and I am totally in love with it and hardly can play another guitar in my collection
    The fit finish is spot-on
    The bite from the pickups is strong the field of the guitar is great and with minimal setup to get it true holds tune and what else do you need to say

    Note about hard gibson cases: There is an aluminum band that goes around the entire top of the case when it is open. If you bang your guitar on that metal band it will leave an indentation on your guitar. I stopped using my Gibson case for that reason.

  • @wolfangopera

    Cherry hot, the Epiphone SG was made for heavy fretting and low distortions.
    With those humbucker pick ups, you can get a clean twinge sound. What's neat about this model is if set right, you can change from clean to distorted with one flick of the switch. This baby was made for rocking.

      adam heeley the body is way too thin to really consider a side mount. So it’s thin body is actually the double edge sword, probably also why the neck wants to dive.

    Never had an SG myself, but I‘d never turn my nose up at it either. It’s been used too frequently by favorite artists of mine (Eric Clapton, Terry Kath, Tommy Shaw, Dicky Betts, Steve Clark, Jimmy Page, Barry Godreau, Carlos Santana, Pete Townshend) for that.
    Didn’t Herritage also dish out a faithful duplicate of the ES-335 in the late 90s?
    I think the 339 is also top heavy in the neck and headstock.

  • @tomspallone1868

    Cracked headstock. But just along one side of the machine head holes. Fixable. I’ll either keep for myself or sell for $200. We’ll see.
    No reason to spend more than $1,000.

    Yeah, I have an Epiphone Goth G400 and it's a neck-heavy too, so this is the reason I recorded only once on it. (I love it because reaching the higher frets is so convenient compare to LP shape but when I record something I'm usually standing and I was afraid of broking its neck) Of course I play a lot with it sitting in a chair. :-) I thought it's because of Goth is a relatively cheap guitar compare to "real" G400 so I thought they made it with thinner body to save some producing cost, but as I see not. I've never played on a Gibson Standard SG, so I'm courious that it has the same issue or not. What is your opinion? Or is there anybody who read this and have some experience with Gibson SG. (Special, or Standard... etc... )

    I have a G400 Pro. When I first got it I was underwhelmed really. Looked into it more and found that the reason I was not loving it was because the fingerboard had extreme amounts of fret buzzing choking the notes and preventing notes from ringing true and sustaining. I had to do a load of fret levelling on this guitar as almost all the lower frets from 7 on-wards needed attention. This is really not good enough for the price you pay for Epiphone which is high end of budget guitar range. In my opinion both Vintage and Yamaha offer so much better. On my Vintage VS6 I had only to level 1 fret to achieve perfection whereas on the Epi it was at least 7 of the frets were out and by a mile which prevented obtaining a reasonably low action. Pick ups are ok on the Epi but nothing special and you may want to replace that as well. So all in all the price is building up and getting near to the cost of a Gibson SG special especially if you cannot do the work for yourself and need a guitar tech to do it for you. All in all then it is clear where Epiphone are making the savings and compromises and this is in the labour intensive tasks like fret levelling. They are chucking out a poor product made cheaply without care and attention where the action is set high to mask out the compromises that they have made and lack of care and attention to detail. Beginners may not notice this but a more intermediate player would. Buy a G 400 or G 400 Pro but expect to do a lot of work to make it a truly playable and pleasurable experience. having said all that I now do like the G 400 Pro because it plays properly like it should have of before it left the factory. I have had Epiphones before and all have suffered quality control issues. I would recommend either Vintage or Yamaha as better options for budget guitars.

    • @umbertoyltp
      @umbertoyltp 4 года назад

      I actually own a Vintage, and I must say in 2004 when I bought the Vs6, the Epiphone lost it on looks, and playability. However, I had to spend some extra cash to deal with all imperfections. Pickups, pots, jack, bridge and finally after fifteen years of wear a complete refret job in stainless steel. Nowadays I think Epiphone have improved, fret level can still be an issue.

      My vintage has a cream binding on the fretboard and what looks like none standard Wikinson pickups. It doesn't really look like the usual SG copies from Vintage. Some have referred to this model as Cherry Burst but I can't find it advertised anywhere. I did have to do some fret work on it to improve it's playability ,but no where near as much as I had to on the Epiphone

    The weight imbalance isn't peculiar to inexpensive guitars, believe me. Ever tried playing a Gibson Flying V? I've owned several and, although they look cool as hell, the neck dive is crazy, as is the feedback (I always filled the pickup switch and volume/tone cavities with foam rubber or something of the sort). And did you ever sit down and try to play one of these things while working on a tune? See how long it will sit in your lap.

      232Jeffer Oh yeah. I also own an Epiphone SG Special with Killpot, an Epiphone Les Paul Custom Prophecy, and an Epiphone Genesis Ltd. Edition PRO. Just trying to make the point that Epiphone makes some pretty damn good guitars. In fact, I taught myself how to play guitar on an Epiphone acoustic I picked up at a Jacksonville, FL pawnshop for $125.00 back in 1973. If people weren't so brand name conscious, they'd find there are some outstanding deals to be had out there.

    Sgs are really neck heavy. A good way to fix that is to clip the strap to your belt if you have one.

    I traded a cheap ibanez for one of these off of craigslist. Except he re-wired it, and painted it. He did a horrible job on wiring so I completely re-did the wiring with Seymour Duncan Invaders and this thing has quickly become my favourite guitar. The neck is so playable and quick. I've been doing a lot of recording and writing with my band and it's so much better with this SG

    SG neck dive? the FIRST thing to do is to take weight out of the headstock end. plastic button Klusons are half the weight of all steel tuners and because they are furthest from the fulcrum (front strap button) it has the greatest affect (principle of moments)

    The guitar sounds fantastic.
    The playing on the other hand...
    Whats wrong with this guy? Its like he wants to play the start, the middle AND the end all at once! Calm down short arms. Just calm the f**k down. Me thinks cocaine may be involved...

    • @pyropunk000069
      @pyropunk000069 8 лет назад

      Pro version has very little difference. Not worth the extra $50 imo

    • @fraserhopewell
      @fraserhopewell 8 лет назад

      +Michał Jóźwiak The main difference is that the Pro version has coil taps on the pick-ups (activated by pulling up the volume pots), which creates a more cutting, "strat-like" sound and adds to the range of tones that the guitar can create.

    I bought one brand new for $200 at guitar center. Loved it! One day I took it over for a jam session with my friend who has a local band with a song on the local rock station. They were cracking on my cheap ass guitar! I felt like the poor kid in school eating a bologna sammich while all the other kids had pizza! Lol.

    • @MikeJones-oe3do
      @MikeJones-oe3do 8 лет назад

      Shorter scale ? They're already short 24.75 inch, a strat is 25.5.

    • @TayG-y9q
      @TayG-y9q 5 лет назад

      There a shorter scale length then most electric guitars already actually, the issue is the scale length starts pretty far up on the guitar compared to other guitars.

    i bought the sg 400 and a gibson sg...the 400 is way more tonal than the Gibson....the fret ends on the gibson felt sharp where the 400s were polished smooth....the control plate on the back fit perfect on the 400 on the Gibson it was sloppy....go figure

    File down the typically unfinished fret ends, replace the crappy Asian pickups and electronics with something decent, maybe install a bone nut and you will have a good gig guitar.
