I live with only rain water harvesting. I have learned that the white IBC tote will start to grow microscopic alge and organisms if not painted. It is essential to keep all the sunlight from getting thru. The small amount of water left in it between tank fills is a perfect environment for things to grow. That's why the main storage tank is black with no way for the light to get in.
I keep looking for videos about water systems that don’t rely on hauling - some combination of rainwater cachement & atmospheric water harvesting. Does no one do this? Atmospheric water harvesters now can collect water in atmospheres down to 10% humidity and even AZ averages over 30%. One guy near Tucson had a giant rain cachement thing and said he got 50% of his yearly water in the 3 weeks a year it rained. Hauling seems to render you totally dependent on local water prices and availability, which kind of defeats the purpose of off-grid living, not to mention the time/effort & vehicle wear of hauling.
I've been looking at fog harvesting, but not sure how well it would work out here, since it's usually so dry. But in the early morning, I DO think there is at least some potential for dew. So maybe a combination of several different types of water harvesting are needed?
@@desertforest2221 I’ve been in north eastern Arizona for almost 6 years and haven’t seen any fog yet. I do have a little rain catchment from a shed I built though, but most of our water is hauled.
Brian, you must suck at research. There are hella videos and info regarding that. Most areas do not allow rain catchment, its illegal. For those that can, there is no shortage of info

if it's like in north mexican ranches, for those without a well permit there are watering holes where people can go and fill their tanks or containers and head back to their ranch. some are free, some have cost.
You mentioned EL Frieda. If you're where i think, sure do miss the crop of local red chilies that were raised there back in the 70's and 80's. Up until this point appear in Colorado I've just been filling 30 gallons at a time putting it in the back of my SUV in a tank or in 5 gallon water jugs When I come down there in the winter I'm looking to do this totally differently. Not a big fan of Colorado and what it's become I'm looking forward to getting back to Arizona as I spent $35 years there is one of the biggest promoters in the valley Thanks! Great info

2 1/2" and 1 1/2" fire hoses were standard up to the 1980s in my area(CT). I will just have to hold onto my old hoses and fittings. Do you collect any rain water? Good Luck, Rick
Why didn't you use all three hoses to fill it? You had them with. Always work smarter not harder. Thought you were getting a trailer for your tanks, could keep them filled so would have double the water there.
I suggested using all three. I honestly don’t know why we didn’t. We did get a trailer but it was to light weight to hail that amount of weight so we are on the search again.
We have a part time place in Sunsites and collect water. Where do you buy / get your water? Do you live in Elfrida? I hope we get some good rain this summer!

A shade cloth cover overhead is simple to put up. Also treat the water..

Order online a UV protection cover that slips over your tote. It'll also keep algae from growing inside it.

A generator for pumping up your water!? Connect a DC pump to solar or to a battery to do your pumping.
IS it difficult to drive the truck with 2,000 lbs of water swooshing back and forth?
Very helpful video👍
Is it even possible to have a well dug out here?
If you electric pump failed, could you pump this by hand, like siphoning? Surely there's got to be a way. Is that possible?
So I have to ask, is it cost that's stopping you from drilling a well or something else?
Where is this?
You can just drive up somewhere and get water?
Elfrida, AZ
... Southeast if Tucson.

Yes, well depths are at 200-300 feet with a current cost of about $15k.

The biggest factor in not homesteading would be water. With a family of 8 it would be crucial to get proper water.
2500 lbs of water. Quite a payload you have a serious truck
Do you filter your water when it comes into the house?
Would those solar water collectors work?
How long will 3000 gallons last you all?
I have a "dumb" question. Why is the holding tank black instead of a lighter color? Is that on purpose?
Dark colors prevent mold growth.
