This dub has reached legendary status for a reason. The script and acting in it are truly remarkable. It really brought life to these characters, to the point where the main cast of this show is still ranked among the best in the history of animé.

Jacob really felt that scene. My guy was super emotional. Also, did anyone notice the swing Hiei took at Toguro after he struck Kuwabara? That truly was an incredible moment for Kuwabara.
I watch YuYu Hakusho every couple of years and Kuwabara grows in me more everytime. And even knowing the outcome of this, it still hits me. "A mulberry is a tree and Kuwabara is a man"
Did ya'll know that the name "Kuwabara" literally translates to Mulberry Field? It is said as a good luck charm (like the English "knock on wood") because it's believed mulberry trees cannot be struck by lightning. :)
I love Yu Yu Hakusho, so much. The messages are so great, safe, and non-toxic. Togashi's messages through Yusuke and the gang are be responsible, take accountability, be honest, express and own your emotions, be authentic, and be kind, despite everything. This fight against Toguro exhibits it perfectly. "I am powerless," is the fear, but Yusuke is learning through this struggle the power and value in standing on his beliefs, having feelings, protecting others, and being who he is. That's why he's my favorite main character. Truly amazing.
and of course its exemeplified through toguro, our main villain (sorry sakyo, you're jusst the vehicle to move Toguro around). Toguro represents how empty the life of someone who forsook those ideals is, how tragic a fallen hero is. especially the part about expressing and owning his emotions and being authentic.
Yeah, untill the twist later on butchers the entire point of the main character and the story so far. The entire message of the show was for Yusuke to connect to his emotions, and not fall into a cycle of violence like Toguro. Suddenly we have a protagonist who doesn't mind going Hanibal Lector serial killer to feed his ancestor. All for the sake of some ass-pull twist. I like to pretend the last season just never happened.
Something that I compare this moment to is Gohan ascending to Super Saiyan 2 against Cell (Fun Fact: Daemon Clarke who voices Toguro also voiced Perfect Cell). The death of Kuwabara was the equivalent of Cell smashing 16's head, and I love that the major difference between Gohan and Yusuke is that Gohan's power exploded out of him, while Yusuke's power was a more quiet release.
I think the difference makes sense though because Gohan was always gentle, so when he becomes angry, he becomes truly fearsome. But Yusuke's strength isn't with his rage or his hatred, it actually lies with his humanity and his kindness.

At 15:33 when Toguro says something like "So I guess that was enough", actually, if I'm remembering correctly, in the japanese version he says kinda "Am I... Am I feeling chills?"
The reason for that bit of Japanese writing translated as 'I...am powerless...' is because in the Manga and Japanese anime what Toguro says there before burying Yusuke's head in the ground is 'you're powerless to save him'.
it still works either way because it highlights just how BIG the gap is now, that even in this desperate situation, even knowing that one of his friends IS going to die, Yusuke can't do ANYTHING to stop it.
@@sarafontanini7051 Yeah, but in the original script it was like Toguro was literally beating that message into Yusuke's head with how he said it and then smashed Yusuke's head into the ground and then the text appeared on a black screen.

Oh and yes. The way you guys loved kuwabara 9 episodes in I just knew I was getting tears out if yall. It's probably the best part about reactions to old shows, that i get to see the pain people feel.
Against the boss of the four saint beasts Yusuke did indeed get stronger from seeing his damsel in distress twice. His spirit power itself increased and then after that he used his life energy
I gotta admit I love/hated that they recreated scenes between eps for the runbacks. It was probably the most egregious in the last fight of the series because the "first" version was vastly superior.
I din'tnow tha. It's interesting how they complement each other. They both dsire a strong challenge, but Cell wanted it because of genetics and to prove he's more powerful and unbeatable, while Toguro wants someone more powerful than him so he can die.
I greatly appreciate how much they love Kuwabara and his character~ He's such a wonderful character and definitely the heart of the team, if not also possibly the heart of the series. Also, I hope this doesn't spoil anything but I don't think it would, I just hope you guys don't finish Yu Yu Hakusho when the Dark Tournament Arc ends because there's two more major arcs after this. So I think I can safely speak for all of us viewers when I say we'd love to see your reactions to the rest of Yu Yu Hakusho once the Dark Tournament Arc ends. But for now, Kuwabara sacrificed his life to help Yusuke reach his full potential in this tournament... What will happen next between Yusuke and Toguro, I wonder? I can't wait for you guys to see the next episode or two~ These reactions to Yu Yu Hakusho can't come sooner~ Lol XP
I'd absolutely love to get into a discord chat with you guys someday when you get through the entire show. YYH is by a slim margine my favorite anime (despite it's flaws) and absolutely love discussing it. Especially when I saw the same threads like you guys have that there are threads of D&D in it. (Sometimes more overt than others.)
So much of this reminds me of Dragonball Z. Cell, Gohan, Final forms, a red head gets sacrificed to get into the right mentality to defeat your opponent.
As you can probably tell. Togashi was extremely inspired by the cell games at this point in the story lmao. Yusuke went super Saiyan 2 against cell due to 16 dying. I mean..unlocked his full potential as a human by unlocking the full power of the spirit orb.
So, looking at the chapter list on Wikipedia for both yu yu hakusho and dragonball has me thinking opposite. Unfortunately, there are only dates for certain chapters for some reason; however, both the start of yusuke vs toguro and Gohan vs cell were on june 3rd 1993. 4 chapters later, kuwabara dies, and yusuke gets a power up. 5 chapters later, 16 dies, and Gohan gets a power up. So as long as there weren't any breaks for between those chapters, Yu yu hakusho did it first.
@@day7053while somewhat true, it wasnt the first time DBZ pulled that trick. Goku turning super Saiyan against Frieza and krillins death really was a shift for shounen in those days
If you look closely, and I cant believe I never saw it till now. But if you look at the kids running behind lil yusuke, they’re his friends but children at 7:37
This whole arc I feel, is what the Perfect Cell arc should have been for Gohan Throughout this series we see Yusuke growing not just as a fighter, but as a person Rough around the edges with a big wall he hides his true feelings behind, and we see his ideals challenged constantly up to this point. This fight basically being a glorified Cell VS Gohan encounter, with the former trying to unlock the latter's hidden potential so he can get the best fight he's been longing for, and the latter's power being locked behind his emotions, and the trigger has to be someone killed in front of their eyes in order for them to achieve it. Heck, Toguro's VA Damian also plays Cell, though I'm sure that's merely coincidence.
Toguro having already thought about killing a friend but being all "eh... Don't really like the way that sits with me so I'll only do it as a last resort"
I wasn't in the fandom when I got into YYH as a child, so I didn't realize Kuwabara wasn't liked until much later. For me, while I liked him, my bias towards Yusuke overshadowed every other character 😅 but my appreciation for him (and mostly all other characters) grew as I got older and could better comprehend and understand the plot/characters in the series. But his sacrifice was devastating when I first saw it. It still gets me even with each rewatch.
This is all well and good, but can we talk for a second about Toguro somehow barging into Yusuke's childhood memories and beating him back to consciousness? Talk about a double knockout.
Oof hearing the after thoughts and them talking about stuff like Ichigo got me wondering how they're going to react to later stuff...You all know what I mean, even I was kinda disappointed by it and I rate Yu Yu Hakusho as one of my fave animes.
It would have been Kurama because Yusuke panics like crazy when he's hurt. He is very protective of him, but it makes more sense for it to be Kuwabara in terms of strength, esp. considering what really went on.
you guys are right about the Spoilers in the Titles because the Titles are (gotten from the Wikipedia Page on the Episode List): English Title: Yusuke's Despair Japanese Translated Title: Yusuke! A Trial to the Limits of Sorrow
RIP Kuwabara. I think this was the moment that transformed Yusuke into the villain character we see himself that hates humans in the Chapter Black arc.
Kid Yusuke was Kid Subaru from ReZero. He ran wilder and crazier than the rest, thinking that was "the thing". But the rest would invariably fall off, and they did. If Subaru had a Keiko tho, he'd never be what we had at the start
Since first time they told about loving Kuwabara I was expecting this episode to come... Well, in 2 episodes can´t wait too, and in the final of next saga.
I don't know if anyone can answer you as to how the fanbase responded to Kuwabara's death since this show came before the internet. I can tell you that while I didn't love kuwabara as much as a 10 years old as I do now (or as you do) I still very much cared.
I'm pretty sure there were yyh forums that existed around the time this episode aired (the eng dub vers, I mean). I remember finding out abt ppl had complained abt him retroactively thru them after the series ended.
Not sure if this is something commenters have told you or not, but regarding Yusuke's life of violence, something the anime completely fails to address is that Yusuke is the bastard child of a Yakuza member. That actually ties into how he was able to return to school after being declared dead. His mother was a Yakuza mistress when she got pregnant, and she still has some kind of connection to the Yakuza that she was able to use to threaten the school into letting him return. I doubt it was a secret that Yusuke's father was Yakuza, but even if that was, family is huge in Japan, so even him being born out of wedlock would be a massive point of shame that kids his age would never let him live down. The emotional repression likely would have started after the first time he hit someone, likely just because he couldn't take it anymore, and saw the reaction he got to enacting violence against his tormentors.
Freiza just blew up krillan and Goku's about to go super Saiyan. There's a lot of parallel between those two shows and why they were my favorite growing up in the 90s
It's not a Togashi piece of work if fans aren't charging a contestant in a tournament 😂 shout out Hunter x Hunter when the fans charged Hisoka when he fought Chrollo.
There has been 5 times anime has made me cry, yu yu Hakusho claims 3 of those...I was devastated when I saw this episode. I think you guys are confused about the wishes for the tournament. It's basically whatever money can buy. Toguro's wish is kinda the extreme of that. One thing no one mentions though is that, as Yusuke's spirit beast, Puu is supposed to give Yusuke his ordeal. This is still all part of Yusuke's ordeal, and Toguro is, in a lot of ways, is what Yusuke could become. It's only really his friends that keep him from going down that road. I love Yu Yu Hakusho, it's my favorite anime of all time and I love that you guys love it too.

Canonically, Yusuke's mom had him when she was 14 years old. She doesn't even know his father's name.
That moment you realize Toguro saved the day himself, because Yusuke is on his last shot. Had he wasted it on Toguro's back, that's the bad bad end.
And they predicted it at the beginning of the show. I remember them imagining Kuwabara making an heroic sacrifice.
I love how when they get their predictions wrong they are still kind of close enough to what happens.
well except for Sakyo XP
14:51 Hiei took a jab at Toguro before he vanished
I've been waiting for this one. It punches me right in the gut every time I see it.
No one notices the anime shows shizuru cold as if she knew it would happen being in denial all tourney long or either knows he's still alive....she doesn't cry
Gotta give Tugoro props he knew killing Yusuke's friends would bring out his power but saved it as a last resort.
Man y’all feel this series like I feel this series, I can’t tell you how much I appreciate that
I hate how much Caleb looks away cause he watched the episode in Japanese already with subtitles before clearly...smdh...and Jacob overreacts it feels for his brother
Been waiting for this episode for a while now, one of the my favorite episodes in anime ever.
I admitt I did anjoy their suffering in this one.
These guys are so brilliant with their predictions. I don't want to say with what exactly so no one gets spoiled but I'm really impressed by them in the discussion
What i'm more impressed by is the ability of the show to foreshadow and communicate exactly the direction it's going so effectively and subtly.
Oh and yes. The way you guys loved kuwabara 9 episodes in I just knew I was getting tears out if yall. It's probably the best part about reactions to old shows, that i get to see the pain people feel.
Kuwabara, the Real Manly Man
Against the boss of the four saint beasts Yusuke did indeed get stronger from seeing his damsel in distress twice. His spirit power itself increased and then after that he used his life energy
*The first episodes where they started to Love Kuwabara*
*All of us knowing what happens later to him*
"Oh boy..., that one gonna sting..."
RIP kuwabara, it's was a good run
lmaoooooo, yes we loved how much u loved kuwabara just for this moment XD
I gotta admit I love/hated that they recreated scenes between eps for the runbacks.
It was probably the most egregious in the last fight of the series because the "first" version was vastly superior.
I wonder if the Toguro’s voice actor ever gets used to killing someone so that his opponent gets stronger, given that he also voiced cell
I din'tnow tha. It's interesting how they complement each other. They both dsire a strong challenge, but Cell wanted it because of genetics and to prove he's more powerful and unbeatable, while Toguro wants someone more powerful than him so he can die.
It's episode 63 now? I love how this one was executed. (pun intended)
I can't wait for you guys to see the next episode or two~ These reactions to Yu Yu Hakusho can't come sooner~ Lol XP
they don't read the comments
@@sarafontanini7051 And you know that how?
“It was the voice of genkai”
“In puu?”
😂😂
Don’t know why I laughed so hard at that.
I've been paticently waiting for this episode as soon as you guys said Kuwabara was your favorite
Well, we broke these guys. Now I can’t wait to see when kuwubara goes really come back. 😂
So much of this reminds me of Dragonball Z. Cell, Gohan, Final forms, a red head gets sacrificed to get into the right mentality to defeat your opponent.
16:51 And that's EXACTLY why it had to be Kuwabara.
Voice acting is top notch this episode. Especially love Laura Bailey.
9:14 you poor guys are really stressed as fuck by this episode 😅 but honestly: we all were. This final battle is just so well done!
If you look closely, and I cant believe I never saw it till now. But if you look at the kids running behind lil yusuke, they’re his friends but children at 7:37
yep
Wow, I never noticed
A mulberry is a tree and a kuwabara is a man
32:00 you’re spot on. I encourage everyone to listen to the bros entire discussion.
This whole arc I feel, is what the Perfect Cell arc should have been for Gohan
Throughout this series we see Yusuke growing not just as a fighter, but as a person
Rough around the edges with a big wall he hides his true feelings behind, and we see his ideals challenged constantly up to this point.
The stakes were so high during this battle. You just feel on the edge the whole time. It's fantastic
I cried hard when he died 😭😭😭😭😭 and seeing this happen again hurts again
Toguro's very very strong. So strong he can break into flashbacks.
Oof hearing the after thoughts and them talking about stuff like Ichigo got me wondering how they're going to react to later stuff...You all know what I mean, even I was kinda disappointed by it and I rate Yu Yu Hakusho as one of my fave animes.
Me too, i still have mixed feelings about that...
Theyre going to love it because thematically for Yusuke and the story it make PERFECT sense. It's not just a trope. It's a trope done well.
"A mulberry's a tree and Kuwabara's a man"
I'm gonna say it agian.. ISANG DAANG PORSYENTONG LAKAS!!!
It would have been Kurama because Yusuke panics like crazy when he's hurt. He is very protective of him, but it makes more sense for it to be Kuwabara in terms of strength, esp. considering what really went on.
Feed me your tears.
you know you really like a character is when you cry when they die and kuwabara was that character
I've seen this like 5 times and criiiied with y'all tonight
you guys are right about the Spoilers in the Titles because the Titles are (gotten from the Wikipedia Page on the Episode List):
English Title: Yusuke's Despair
Japanese Translated Title: Yusuke! A Trial to the Limits of Sorrow
certianly not the most hopeful title or one that speaks of yusuke winning the battle
sheeshhh im tearin up too when i thought kuwabara was dead.
The Episode title in America is called Yusuke's Despair
Was that little Kuwabara's silhouette running with them in the flashback?
For me, Kuwabara was a G from ep1
A mulberry is a tree, and you know the rest...
If freeza blew up Gohan instead of krillen goku would have ascended ssj2 in a jump. 😆
It's not a Togashi piece of work if fans aren't charging a contestant in a tournament 😂 shout out Hunter x Hunter when the fans charged Hisoka when he fought Chrollo.
well at the very least, Caleb will at least be happy when he finds out it's not Yusuke's dad who's a demon...
It kind of is...
They should've just censored that part in the ED... spoilery
idk would they have figured out what was going to happen from "Yusuke's Despair (Yusuke! A Trial to the Limits of Sorrow)"??
they certaily would've expected SOMETHING bad to happen and thus be on their toes all episode. it certaily doesn't speak of fun times and victory
Been waiting for this one for a long time...
I love Yu Yu Hakusho, it's my favorite anime of all time and I love that you guys love it too.
plus the committee are all dead. THere's noone TO grant those wishes anymore.
I really do wonder if Paru Itagaki took inspiration from YYH here for Beastars's third(?second season) arc & Toguro for Riz
11:00 lol
