Awesomene! So good to hear that you enjoyed it that much. I'll be making some more videos over summer albeit at a much slower pace but hopefully better quality. Tight lines
thank you so much ! Aitutaki is really a Paradise on the Earth and the bones there are giants, hope to go again there , a place where a flyfisher could die in peace at the end of his life. Greetings from Switzerland ❤
What a trip, so full of fun and adventure, whatever can go wrong will but that makes for fantastic memories. Makes catching a trout seem a little tame, I found first time on kings that you need to have everything so well lined up to get the result and Bone Fish are a level above that again. Thanks for sharing.
Well done! I felt like I was fishing along side with you. Beautiful location and beautiful water. Congratulations on getting your bonefish & thank you for sharing your trip.
Nice video.I spent 2 weeks there this last year. I slayed the trevally and those little snappers. Got good shots a few big bones but no sight casting hook ups. I did get torn to shreds dragging the "milk" out off honeymoon. Those bomies will get ya everytime. Got smoked by a GT on a 12wt. Went offshore for GT's and got humiliated by 4 big ones....broke 80lb braid like it was nothing....then hooked a marlin on a 20# spin rod offshore on a plastic swim bait! I LOVE fishing Aitutaki! probably why I just booked 21 days there this next summer.....
Really enjoyed the video mate. Fantastic production, gripping story of highs and lows, incredible location. Great to see another video from you despite the challenges. Keep em coming, we all appreciate it!
Seriously good video. As someone who has done a couple of trips out there already (and has another one booked) then I can say that this should be compulsory viewing for anyone thinking of heading to Aitutaki to chase bones. And I second your point about getting a guide - even if it is only for half a day. You don't know what you don't know. We "diy'd" the first two days before we had a couple of days with Butch - and very quickly worked out we were walking the flats way to fast, and probably missing heaps of fish as a result.
Thanks Damon, very much appreciated. I can't wait to go again some day, maybe I'll find a way to do it again next year! A guide is a must if you haven't been before, not getting one can just ruin what should be the trip of a lifetime. Hope your next trip is a banger.
Thanks Johan. That was excellent entertainment. Interesting to see the emotional rollercoaster with ups and downs and the energy levels flaring up when the line starts running with a bone. Definately a bucketlist item. Fantastic camera work in a beautiful setting.
Awesome Video I too have experienced the discouragement of not catching a bonefish on a trip designated for them. Went down the Bahamas this year, in hopes to get our first bonefish (DIY); my best friend got his day 1 of the 7 days we were there. Nonetheless, that was the only bonefish we got to hand that trip. Can't wait to go back and try at them again. Brilliant video. Perfectly captures the reality of highs and lows of DIY bonefishing.
So good Johan! Wow what a crazy adventure. I've sorta resisted the idea of bone fishing and tropical salt in favor of more local adventures, but seeing how much fun you had DIY makes me rethink that. I especially love how you could just lay out in the water when you needed a break!
It's a very different and enjoyable experience. Sight fishing in clear warm tropical waters is very pleasant indeed and the fish are very fun to catch too. Glad you enjoyed it. Hopefully I can make more of this style in future.
@@CrazyAboutFlyFishing Real fishing complicated by wind and tides . I have had the chance to do in Cuba (Cayo Largo) a small unspoiled island off the mainland and I was guided ! Epic fishing , huge schools of bones , permit and tarpon as well . Amazing trip of a lifetime . Ended up catching only bones but I was such a novice and it takes plenty of patience and the guide was so worth it .
@robertcornelius8056 that sounds awesome. I've heard lots about Cuba. Lots to dream about doing some day. Tight lines and hope you get to do many more trips like that.
Great video - been looking forward to this since the instagram pics at the time of the trip. Tough fishery DIY - you did well to persist and get some results!
That's awesome thanks so much. I really hope I get to go back some day but in the mean time I'll be exploring some of the more muddy local flats for kings and snapper this summer. Should be fun and hopefully I get to make a video or two about it too. Tight lines.
Great story guys but just a heads up about the fishery to the DIY crew. Was over there for the first 2 weeks in August and did not know that they dredged the channel. The nearby flats are stuffed with a foot and a half of sludge. If you intend to go guided then no problems but otherwise you are restricted to the lagoon. I won't go back for at least another year and hope the flats recover.
Thanks for the heads up. Caught a ton of fish on the town flat last time I was there - hopefully it bounces back quickly as I’m meant to be there mid next year.
I loved your video, Johan - I went to Aitutaki in Nov 2022, so I could so relate to your highs and lows. I am also a SAFA living in Sydney, so hope to get back to Aitutaki sometime - it would be great if we could link up for a fish someday!
Thanks Ian, very happy to hear you loved the video. If you ever come over to New Zealand for a fish make contact. I'm allways keen to try and catch up if life allows. Tight lines and hope you have a great summer in the mountains or the sea.
Hi Johan - I fished the Tongariro and surrounding rivers for 12 years in a row - I did improve - unfortunately Covid and some other curcumstances has put an end to these trips - hopefully I can get back to NZ sometime - it would be great to fish together - wishing you and your family a Happy Christmas and tight lines for 2024. Cheers, Ian
For the best bonefish experience, where you can catch ten a day at times, you need to go to Christmas Island in Kiribati. That is where all the action is.
Wash the reel and rod in freshwater agter every day while you are on the trip and give it all a complete clean once home. Check drag, relubricate etc. Make sure it dries well and check for any salt or corrosion and deal with it asap. My reels are simple so I soak them in lukewarm water and change it a few times to make sure all the salt gets out of the backing. Just get that saltwater off anything metal as soon as you can each day while you are out.
Yes, you can buy a license from the boatshed. A think a week is $50NZ from memory. The rules are on the back. It allows you to fish in most areas apart from a few guide only and nursery areas.
Hopefully I will get to do another trip some day but sadly not in the near future. Probably a few more years. If you get the chance, I highly recommend giving it a go, it's pretty addictive
Haha yes it's kinda true but there is a certain appeal to casting a fly line. I do spin and wven baitfish at times as well as the situation dictates. Enjoy your fishing and tightlines. Thanks for giving it a watch hope you enjoyed it a little.

After fishing in salt water, what maintenance should I do and how should I do the fly reel to preserve it?
Wash the reel and rod in freshwater agter every day while you are on the trip and give it all a complete clean once home. Check drag, relubricate etc. Make sure it dries well and check for any salt or corrosion and deal with it asap. My reels are simple so I soak them in lukewarm water and change it a few times to make sure all the salt gets out of the backing. Did you fish the flats by One Foot Island. How about the coral heads for GT'sj
Yes, we did a good amount around onefoot. Will's first bone of the trip was essentially from the beach on the island.
By chance, do you recall the fishing license requirements, and where to get them? Thanks, that was a fun video to watch!
Yes, you can buy a license from the boatshed. A think a week is $50NZ from memory. The rules are on the back. It allows you to fish in most areas apart from a few guide only and nursery areas.

Were the trevally caught on bonefish flies?
Yes they aren't that fussy, just need a decent presentation and they will often take it.
@@CrazyAboutFlyFishing thanks, just arrived in Tahiti and will be fishing. Cook Islands later in the year.

at 37:38 the aerial photo of One Foot Island the flats and the channel have been restructured from storms
Yeah it had changed a lot since the first time I was there. Must have been some big storms.
keep your rod tips down and don't trout set. Your hand was too high at that point. I though that I was the only that did that. LOL
Haha yup easy to do the trout set 🤣
i prefer a spinning rod with lures; this fly fishing is silly. it's deliberately handicapping yourself.
