- How do I turn my PAPER DRAWINGS into GAME ART?
I've been asked this for literally years now, so with my potato camera, pens, paper, and selection of software I decided to take you on a journey of turning doodles into assets, scribbles into graphics, drawings into art, and sketches into games.
Feel free to change any of this up and find your own methods of generating game art from your own wonderful creations, I'd love to see YOUR stamp on it.
Would definitely use this tutorial if I was good at drawing. 10/10
Do it anyway! There's a lot of charm sometimes in non-representational art (that some people call 'bad') that could make your game really stand out, in theory. :)
I suck also, I suggest pixel art.
Despite popular belief,@@BigJDawg6969, pixel art and digital art or drawing is equally hard
Same
@@BigJDawg6969pixel art is not easier tho. Animating PA is way more painful than animating vectorized or skeleton 2D
I've been trying to figure out ways to make art for my games in a more interesting, efficient way. This video may be old but it's helping me tons. Nice to see another Construct user too.
Mate, this was amazing. I love your art style, the bold lines work so well.
Thank you so much, that means a lot to me. :)
I have been trying to find a way to make art for video game projects I wanna do for fun. I have tried pixel art, digital paiting, 3d modeling etc. They all just have too much of a learning curve. But this method seems to be easiest for me. I draw much better by hand!
I think this is the exact reason I ended up coming up with this method; like, I have a Wacom for drawing digitally, but without being able to feel the pen tip's tension on actual paper it just doesn't see the same. Digital art's hard, I feel ya there! :)
I'm not a developer, but what I do is sketch on Photoshop, then ink and color in Illustrator. Vector graphics seem perfect for hand drawn video games.
Friends, what's one gamedev trick you'd love to see a guide to?
Or, what's one you'd love to be able to share with the world?
I'd love to see how you handle drawing humanoid characters and animate them for games, I can draw inanimate objects but suck and drawing and animating humanoids
new subscriber from india👍make a video about easiest way to create 2d game character and animation tutorial video like walk, shoot etc and also make a video about endless runner and endless top down shooter video(endless means not like flappy bird),and
easiest way to create 2d game assets, game music sound effects, game animation softwares,
suggest game genere for bigginner
devs,game ideas for dev
and tell me which is best pixel art or non pixel art?
I'd like to see more examples of your coloring process.
1:02 Lycansubscribe, played by YOU, is my favorite character
I really enjoy when they show up in a story, yeah. ;)
A combination of this and skeletal animation feels like a powerful combination. Digital art feels so awkward for most people.
I learned to draw last year (my art in my photo) and so I'm excited to create my game!! I designed it to all take place on one map like a MOBA and I'm going to start painting and drawing the world 😁
I'm learning rpg maker and as a musician I needed help with the art part. Thank you for this video, I will totally use your type of art to practice !
that grid tip is really useful never thought of that
Bloody Fan-tastic to say the least! Definitely would love to see more Tuts made by you good sir! As pencil on paper is definitely my favorite aesthetic of all. Great work and looks great! 👌🏼
You make a very good point here. Game design by yourself can be totally overwhelming. It actually sounds like a good idea to me to build an entire game with total crap graphics to get the gameplay ironed out, then move on to the graphics.
Oh gosh i love your humour and quality of the videos
Thank you! I do try. ;)
Median filtering is the classical solution to salt-and-pepper noise, if you're having trouble getting clean results, I think GIMP's noise reduction has a median filtering option that might help :)
The default noise-removal generally gives me really clean art though. Helps that I already draw pretty solidly. :)
A follow-up on backgrounds would be great! Or even just a few tips if you don't want to make a full video
Backgrounds, huh? I think I have an idea for how to tackle that...
This is great. I draw much better on paper than on a graphics tablet. Thanks so much!
The grid paper scale and threshold tips are solid gold. +1sub
Thank you!
it looks so awesome! i dont know if you've ever played it but the style reminds me of super paper mario, a game i have v fond memories of. great video!
Man, what an awesome resource and walkthrough! Thanks for making this and looking forward to more
Thank you! I shall endeavour to make more, but tutorials are HARD. XD
I love your art style reminds me Mignola and Bourassa. I'm learning hand drawing at the moment, hope I'll be able to draw stuff like these :)
Hi! I'm new to your channel and also new to game design, have you done a video tutorial on hand drawn sprites/animations you use/ all that jazz? If you haven't yet, consider this a sign that at least one person would be interested in seeing the video! Thanks!!
Amazing, I am glad you shared this video on the Construct group on FB.
It is very inspirational :-)
Thank you! That does mean a lot to me, and I hope it can help at least someone out there. :)
@@PensnPixels definitely it's of a good help for lots of people!
And I totally rely on how much is important a feedback on a video. You get already a good quantity here, that means you have done a great job! :)
This will be be my guide to migrate from pixel art
So valuable content ❤
construct?? sickkk
A fellow Construct user, AKA person of good taste? ;)
@@PensnPixels definitely hehe
This is gold 🔥
I thought you did a great job breaking it down for a noob like myself
how about more complex animations? it's sure cool to draw a one or two rocks or leaves, but how about a fully animated character? would you hand draw it too? or do you avoid having to draw too animated stuff?
I'd love to see a follow up video for this!
I usually use procreate and is easier i think, cause u can add the grid directly in the porject and work with it
Love that kind of game dev
Thank you! Evidently, so do I!
Thanks for the video bro. Will definitely be helpful while creating some things
simple and effective.. excellent video!
Very beautifull. I needed an alternative method to Pixel Art to create a quick mini game to give to a friend for his birthday. This tutorial solved all my problems. A thousand thanks!
This a dope channel, can we do this with 3D?
What do you call that type of pen? I'm really intrigued:>
It really is a nice art style
Awesome! Thanks for sharing!
Nice video. Keep going mate and you'll go from nobody to almostbody to, eventually, somebody (: I'm here from one of your comments at LTGD and from what I just saw, you're as good at this as he is.
Thank you, so much! LTGD and I are actually good friends, have been for many years now, and we collaborated on his A Brief History of Golf (I did the art), so I wouldn't entirely rule-out a collaboration in the not-too-distant future if that's your kinda thing. ;)
@@PensnPixels Definitely would. Love the accent, the humor and your art style (which is, let's face it, quite better than his)!
LTGD's got his strengths too though, much respect to him as a creator. A big inspiration to me.
Brilliant! Thanks, dude!
brilliant stuff ! really easy to follow to
Thanks! Coming from yourself, that means a lot!
Really like your drawing style & artwork. Really memorable in NekoNecro. Any plans to release on PS4?
I'll perhaps look into it in the future, I have a PS4 and it'd be lovely to be able to play NekoNecro on it. But I'm still resting from the whole four-year ordeal of having made the game, so I'll re-assess at some point in the near future.
@@PensnPixels Big congratulations on releasing the game. It's a massive achievement that's really under appreciated.
DUDE THIS IS AMAZING
New sub btw
This was a pretty cool video.
Thank you, so much!
i wish i can draw like you!! thanks!
Great video but I was sad that it didn't have the same outro music from 1:00
Hah, that's a sped-up ending credits roll music from my game Quickly, Quackley! Perhaps I may dig it out if I ever decide to do any kind of standard video outro...? 🤔
Hey. Great video! Wonderful editing.
Thank you, so much! Glad you liked it!
Thank you this is super useful
Show cara muito obrigado pela

Slick videos! Definately subscribing! I have to use this!
Again, thank you! I'd love to see people put their drawings; and unique art styles; into more games.
cool
Great Video!
Wow thanks will try this with my game even though am not good at drawing lol
That's totally okay though, as sometimes a lack of drawing ability can be overcome somewhat by having an appealing style. I always like to point out the popular nerd webcomic 'xkcd' as an example of this; it's all stick-figures! And y'know what? That's cool!
I'm sure you'll do fine. :)
Really good video
well done!
This is a great video for someone that can't draw I have watched this video like 4-5 times today but I had a few questions what pends do you use and my second question is what assists would you recommend like rulers and stuff along those lines
I'd recommend whatever you work best with. I know that's a cop-out answer, but the only reason I don't use rulers for straight lines is that I kinda like the wobbly thing I have going on; just the grid-paper squares is enough for me personally. In essence, if it works for you personally - it works!
Awesome 👌
Question for you my friend...When you say 'scan the grid paper and find out what is a decent size for your level art', what are you using as a 'measuring stick' to say what is decent? I am starting a game with hand drawn art myself, and Ive already made a sprite sheet of walking anaimation for my character but I stopped myself to learn a bit first, for I worry my files are too large. Should I scale them down to the point where they don't overcompress and get a bit fuzzy? And am I doing this to try and limit the overall size of asset files so the game doesnt have performance issues? Any input you can provide is appreciated, thank you!
Edit: I am using Unity and I realize you are using Construct, but I feel your info will still be just as valid.
I can see the immense value of this video but unfortunately I can't use the knowledge shared... It's so crazy, I'm amazed by this video but I can't use anything because I don't know what to do and lack the skills
Why did you fill the background with blue before removing it?
Subbed 🎉
Graph paper for sizing consistency 👍🏻
Good stuff ✅🔥
Thank you, so much!
Literally usefull🔥
So glad to hear it!
I'm using a canvas instead of a computer or sketch.?
Is there a way to do this with art that has been colored on paper already?
Beautiful. But I wonder why you don't draw on a digital pen tablet from the very start? What's the point of drawing on paper?
I've never really vibed with it for some reason; I think it's because I partially rely on the feedback from paper to pen. But there's also the fact that I can take a pen and sketchbook practically anywhere with me; most of NekoNecro was drawn in various food and drink places whilst away from home. :)
@@PensnPixels I see. So there is no "technical" reason not to use a digital pen from the very start.
I'm new to drawing and ask stupid questions, you know. xD
No technical reason at all. I guess I've drawn on actual paper for so long that I'm just incredibly comfortable with it.
And IMO, if it comes from an honest place there no such thing as a stupid question. You wanted to know a thing, and asked it. Stay curious!
@@PensnPixels Thanks :D
Any suggestions on good pens to use for this?
question,i dont have a scanner , can i just use a photo made with my phone
Game engine do you use
2 years later... The answer is Construct 2/3
yesssssssssssssssssss
This!
Ive designed a whole asset set formy game but downsizing renders them FUZZY! Do I need to redraw using your 32 x 32 block technique?
maybe try not downsizing them so much?
I wish I could scan stuff now
At a push, a camera/phone can take pictures of drawings on paper; but it's a bit more of a task to get the sizing consistent. Failing that, most modern printers annoyingly have a built-in scanner for some reason -- perhaps you know someone who owns one that would allow you access for a bit?
Quick question: Why would you scan instead of taking a picture?
Primarily to get the image consistent; to take a picture with a camera that's usable would mean more work -- ensuring distance, angle, lighting, et al are all the same from capture to capture. A scanner is much easier, if you have access to one.
Which app did u used bro?
Gimp
It's free
I had a question sir, which game engine you use?
Construct 3. :)
If only I could draw haha
Y'know, I may do a video about that too, someday...
Hey guys
Um. Hey? :P
i don't have scanner 😭
Apparently most phones these days have a camera mode that's almost as good; if you're able to get images from phone to computer, you should be good. :)
Its easy just draws things on a paper
Well RUclips is weird. It showed this video has 534k views!! Well I clicked cuz I'm a programmer and I want to do some art! But anyways RUclips is scary!! 😂😂😂😂
😱😱😱😱😰😰
I can only dream of getting such reach!
I have been requested to do actual-drawing tutorials on this channel. If the requests keep up, I may consider doing some... :)
Bro just use clay ? 3D pog
😁
Honestly, if I had a 3D scanner you'd probably see 3D things from me. I love sculpting when I can, but 3D modelling software confuses the h*ck outta me. XD
As a graphic designer, your artstyle is like porn to my eyes.
Thank you so much! I studied a little graphic design myself in my '20s so hopefully a little bit of that still remains? Again, thanks! :)
Is there a way to do this with art that has been colored on paper already?
