I was hyped about this film when Fangoria announced it in march of 1988, but don't recall it ever playing in Canada(it did only get a limited run of 50 screens) and finally watched it VHS in 1994. I do like the film (maniac cop 2 is pretty good too while the third being forgettable)and have watched it a few times a year for the nostalgia. It's a fun B movie and love the cameos and cast. It is nice that while Lustig's directing career is basically over he manages to remain extremely relevant to film fans through his involvement with Blue Underground.
I personally find something very appealing about this movie beyond the cast though a movie with the likes of Bruce Campbell, Richard Roundtree, Sheree North, Robert Z’Dar, and Tom Atkins is very unusual. It’s short on gore, but the premise and execution is much better than it should be. It’s strangely intelligent in my opinion despite the car chase at the end.

This is a silly but fun sorta-slasher. Larry Cohan script, William Lustig direction, great cast. The second one is good too, maybe even better, but the third one goes a bit too far into unbelievable territory. It's a good concept because it takes a protective figure and turns him into the monster. That kind of rips your sense of safety out from under you. It seems like this series is somewhat forgotten now, which is a shame. I could see a reboot, if you can find anyone with a big enough jaw to fill the role!

Gods, I remember watching this with my brother when it was first released. Question for my fellow old folks out there: which makes you feel older, hearing the references and laughing because you would have made them or remembering those movies when they were new?
So, personal experience...the thing that always makes me feel old (and occasionally depresses me) when making these videos is remembering that I saw these films when they were new. I remember where I saw them, what was going on in my life...all that stuff. It's sort of bittersweet. @@TheRealNormanBates to quote Mike, "Christ, we're old". 😁
Oooh, „The Captain and Tenille“!
Manic Universe would have been awesome, Manic Gas Station Employee, Maniac Maintenance Man, you could do anything, lol, great video, I missed the premiere, dangitttt!
Hahaha! Maniac Job Universe is something I'd watch... :p
@@TheHorrorGeek I know right!
Awesome! Cant wait to watch.
Reminder set! A classic from a great New York film director and head of Blue Underground video!
Screen legend Tom Atkins! Halloween 3, the Fog (original), Escape from New York, Creepshow, in addition to this and Night of the Creeps, great actor!
Unlicensed chiropractic procedures, I laughed too hard at that
Yeah, whilst this is very low on the splatter, it's a movie I've very much endeared myself to from when In was young and even enjoy on repeat viewings.
Flawed protagonists, great villian with great backstory. Fun set pieces and a sequel that was just as good as this one.
Sometimes great horror doesn't need to be covered in gore...although it does help!
Keep up cracking content.
“It must be visiting hours, COS MY FRIEND IS BACK !!!.....” Can’t wait to see you do the sequel Mike !
Love the Debbie Harry/Meatloaf reference! Wonder if the Zombie-Cop from 'Night of the Comet' was used when they conceptualized Cordell??? Also... is it me, or does the Cop at 5:53 look like Christoph Waltz???
