As a native Argentinian tango dancer it's so nice to see two women dancing tango together be appreciated! That's usually how we learn tango here because there's not enough men in classes as they don't really care about dancing tango that much jaja
Derek Hough made a similar observation on the same episode, noting that the tango began by men dancing with other men.

Redemption dance is done every season. The judges pick a dance style that maybe wasn't so perfect and they get the chance to redeem themselves in that style. It's usually done in the finale.
For their first dance of the night each pair was assigned a judge, who gave the pair style of dance to redo from a prior week. So Jojo and Jenna for example got Len, who wanted to see another Argentine Tango from Jojo since he thought their last one from Britney week was more like a traditional tango.
Len telling them that a Ballroom Tango is a dance you do with your wife while an Argentine Tango is a dance you do with your girlfriend took me out. I was surprised he chose this one over their Cha Cha or Paso Doubl but his notes and Jojo's growth really took this dance to another league over their first one so I'm so glad he chose this.

@@amaraopuiyo943 It wasn't a fall... Jenna says she stepped and slipped on JoJo's hem. I have looked at it closely, and I didn't see that... but Jenna's foot definitely slipped and skated out from under her. It could have happened to anyone.
And what was impressive about it was that JoJo caught Jenna as she was dropping and assisted her back up (it took strength and sharp reflexes to do that), and they continued as though it had not happened.
Was the dance perfect? No... and that was reflected in the scores. But it was their dance of the season, so please cut them some slack 🙂.

@@robingarvin-mack oh no you must’ve got me wrong, I love that dance that’s why I would love to see them do it again. like I know it was their first time and this had never been done before so there was no way they would’ve known that they would’ve slip on each other‘s skirt but they did and of course they learned from that that’s why I would love to see them do it again because I know it wouldn’t happen again. I love Jojo so like if my comment came off wrong my bad. The dance was phenomenal for their first week, my comment just came of wrong because I wasn’t trying to sound mean or like some type of way. JoJo did a phenomenal job picking Jenna back up like that is not an easy thing to do especially for someone who had never done ballroom dancing before there’s nothing but praise for that dance I was just surprised that they chose the Argentine tango because it wasn’t their lowest scored dance but then again it was their first and everyone did get like sevens and sixes so I was just shook that they picked Argentine tango was all

They couldn't do many lifts earlier because Jojo had to gain muscle and strength to be able to life Jenna.
The one thing Jenna said in order for them try and do the lifts as the guys both her and jojo do planks and push ups before every rehearsal.
When they appeared on Ellen, they told her JoJo was up to 34 PUs and 3 minute planks.
Personally, I think if they're doing PUs, which if done properly means they are doing a plank anyway, they should do several PU reps instead of standalone planks. But that's me!

We can all make our reactions as we see the dance, but what I see is a teenager turning into a woman through DWTS and Jenna's mentorship. Jenna has not only been JoJo's dance mentor but also a friend who has guided JoJo by building trust and modeling positive behaviors to enable JoJo to spread her wings and blossom as a beautiful young woman but still have the strength and courage to tackle any obstacle life may throw at her.
THIS was sultry and sensual, and also slinky, sophisticated and sublime.
Their opening move, stretching out their legs and raising their hats, back-to-back and unable to see the other, was perfectly in sync, and it just kept building and getting better and better thereafter.
Pure Divine Heavenliness... and so worthy of their 3rd PERFECT SCORE!!! (Should have been their 5th, but they were robbed of a point in each of the two previous weeks!)

I watched it a bunch of times. It’s really amazing. To keep up with Jenna and not being trained at ballroom until this season and practically meeting Jenna’s level is pretty epic on Jojo’s part. I had maybe three little spots I noticed as only a viewer of dance that made me notice anything other than perfect and they were so very minor that I forgot them as soon as the next movement happened. The footwork for me was so so epic and their flow and synch was so smooth and made me lose myself in the dance which to me is why it’s called an art. Suspending reality for a moment and losing yourself into any piece of art is what the masters do and it happened here. I also think jojo’s facials were good most times and a few she could have made them more passionate and steamy but she’s young and still learning to be an adult. I think Jenna’s sharpness is more notable and Jojo’s being anything less is visually more apparent bc her legs are so much longer than Jenna’s legs. I really enjoyed seeing Jenna flip to the lead for that compass turn also and despite giving Jojo most lead roles based on merely size difference is something that could be changed up so Jenna is the little firecracker and Jojo the follower which makes more sense. The only problem is it changes them to a role of big sister little sister or older mentor to younger mentee (hoping that’s the right word) lol. I was hoping for more same sex partnership that represented dating and romantic partnership within a same sex couple and the reality is that 1. She just had a devastating real life heartbreak and 2. They function as a mentorship in real life which is cool but kind of takes the dancing as a couple out of it. I know people have tossed out that crap about Jenna breaking up Jojo’s relationship and it’s possibly affected Jojo’s allowing herself to fully get in character of romantic partner to Jenna. I can see Jenna able to put herself in character and make connection as a dance but I feel Jojo is holding back due to either her age, experience, recent personal events or just needing to learn that type of dance expression and connection in partner dancing which she rarely does if ever in adult forms of dance.
I don’t know but it was one of the best dances they did for sure and I enjoy rewatching it.
I would love to see Jenna and Jojo dance more off this show and see how Jojo grows as a dancer. I remember her from her little early AUDC days and seeing her all grown up and in the sultry role is cool to see. I still think she can grow more there while maintaining her true to self image. She is a firecracker and hasn’t fully let go yet I feel. Makes me happy to continue following her. She’s always been a rare gem.
jenna is such an amazing dancer, she is so strong.
Jena has Jojo on a work out regimen every day before practice. The redemption dance is picked by the judges, they picked the tango to do over. They felt they could be better this time than before.
The redemption part was redoing a dance they have previously done and applying the judge's criticism from that dance. So they are doing the Argentine tango again that I think they did in week 3?

@@Ashleehmock My monitor is a cheap 42" TV, so I am able to watch both dances side by side. And while the choreography in this shared elements of their previous AT ( such as a couple of the lifts, etc.) they were completely different routines.

Yeah I did notice that that opening was a hair off and when I watched it the first time it made me nervous for the rest of the dance but every move after was perfectly in sync to an almost stupifying level so I'm wondering if it was by design. That footwork at around 42 sec into the dance that then dives into a dip and lift is insane. It's crazy how JoJo makes these lifts look so easy now when she really only did lifts a couple times in the first half of the season but she's gotten so much stronger since then and has really been remarkable as of late. The more difficult the lift she's been able to pull off the more Jenna's really been able to shine too. So bummed we're losing them after next week as they've really hit their stride.
So some behind the scenes:
Len was their coach for this and his comment was “ Ballroom tango is a dance between a person and his wife. Argentine Tango is a dance between person and his girlfriend” 😂 . He mention for their Brittany Night version that it was too ballroom tango
After the dance Len said “Bloody Brilliant”
In the semi they always have the competitors do a "redemption" dance where the judges choose a previous dance/style for them to get a do-over for.

Hey J... others have also put their spin on what the Redemption Dance is... this is my take on it...
So basically, it is a 'second chance' _'do over'_ dance of a style they danced earlier in the show, obviously incorporating the same AT elements, but otherwise with new choreo.
Their first Argentine Tango (week 3) was criticized by Goodman for having too much _'staccato'_ and being more like a 'ballroom tango' than an AT, and he said it wasn't _'oozy'_ (which I take to mean, 'slinky' and sensually _'slithery')_ like an AT should be.
The other thing with the redemption dances is that the couples get a visit from one of the judges who offers tips and advice as to how to improve the dance from the first time around. JoJo-JJ got Goodman, and after they had performed it, his only comment was, and I quote verbatim, _'I'll tell you what that was... It was bloody brilliant!'_
They got a perfect score for it.
Derek Hough said that it was common for 2 men to dance the AT, and he thought it was great that they had now brought it _'full circle'_ with two women dancing it. Any thoughts on that? I didn't know 2 men often dance it, did you?

This is spot on! I also think JoJo is much stronger physically from the training and performing the dances over the last 8 weeks. Jenna mentioned how she was nervous to do sensual dances with JoJo, but since they did the Rumba, I think both are more free & confident to dance sensually eg Argentine Tango and Rumba recently. The dances were bloody brilliant! ☺️
@@ready2tube Yes... Jenna has been giving JoJo workouts. On Ellen recently, they said they were up to 34 Press Ups & 3 minute planks.

Dude that is such a good point; It never occurred to me that JoJo is lifting Jenna in heels; I'm just so astounded that they're doing lifts period.

Hello. I particularly liked your appraisal of this dance. I remembered REDEMPTION in this case is because a judge is allowed to ask the dancers to dance again a particular dance, to see if they can improve it. This was of course the dance, which I think helped based on what they were wearing and Len's advice to dance like 'You're dancing with your girlfriend, not your wife'. I'll rewatch your appraisal Jordan, to check out the words you are using. Yes, Port de bra, I'll look out for that too.
They did their Argentine Tango well the first time around however I did agree with Len that it was more similar to ballroom tango and did not have the sensual nature of Argentine Tango. All of their dances were very good or fantastic so Len choosing for them to revisit this style in the semi final allowed Jenna to choreograph a more sensual routine and Jojo clearly feels more comfortable in using her body to show the passion and she has gained strength as well. This was incredible and we should remember that it is not unusual for a teenager to feel uncomfortable in their own body and not want to use it in the manner especially in front of a national audience. I applaud Jenna for helping Jojo feel more confident in expressing passionate feelings and dancing with her whole body. Remember too that Jenna is a trained ballroom dancer for many years (and other styles) and she is comfortable using her body in this manner and very experienced. She has done a fantastic job with Jojo and Jojo has in turn let her true self shine through in every dance and killed it. Their friendship is evident in every dance and not one other dance pair on this show has such an amazing connection like the one between the two of them. Can’t wait for your next few reactions to their other semi final dance and the finale. Love you to pieces Jordan 💕🤗

Jenna Johnson is a five-time U.S. National Latin Champion, U.S. National Youth 10 Dance Champion, as well as a three-time National Contemporary Winner. In 2012, she represented the United States at the World Latin Championships held in Beijing, China.
At the age of eighteen, she appeared as a finalist in Season 10 of So You Think You Can Dance, where she placed in the Top 4 Girls. She is well-remembered for her routine with All-Star Mark Kanemura, entitled "I Am the Best." After the season, she was made dance captain of the 44-city So You Think You Can Dance tour. Once she returned from the tour, she was made an All-Star and has appeared as one for the past four years. She recently competed in Season 14 where she and her partner, Kiki Nyemchek, finished in the finale.
Johnson has been a dancer in Dancing with the Stars for eight seasons and participated in four of the Dancing with the Stars: Live! tours, where she was made dance captain for three out of the four. She is passionate about creating and choreographing, and cannot wait for another amazing season.
Dancing since the age of 3 - latin, ballroom, ballet, contemporary and hip hop. So well trained and fabulous and another reason she and Jojo connect from the competition dance world at an early age.
As part of the Semi-Final episode every team has to redo their "worst" dance they already did in previous weeks and that's what the redemption round means.

I did think that the Argentine Tango was one of JoJo's weakest dances (second to her paso) and I did feel that she improved here. She was more grounded and sure footed and comfortable with the sensuality of the dance this time around. And because of JoJo's comfort I feel like Jenna can crank up her sexy and energy levels.

Like, is the lead supposed to just support and show off the other dancer?
Usually in mixed couple dances, the man would do all the lifts etc., and his primary function is to make his partner look great.

Judge Len dinged them the first time they did Argentine tango because there was too much ‘staccato’ & it was too much like a ballroom tango, hence they need to be redeemed for that performance.
While I think it was beautiful, I think Jojo was a bit too stiff and a bit slower on the moves.
