  • MIT Earth Resources Laboratory presents Dr. Albena Mateeva, Principle Research Scientist at Shell, on "DAS VSP applications to reservoir surveillance - overview of status."
"In the last decade, a fascinating new technology emerged - Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS). It has many applications, seismic and non-seismic, but the focus of this talk will be on active seismic, and specifically, Vertical Seismic Profiling (VSP). DAS VSP developed very fast and introduced a step-change in how downhole seismic can be acquired and used. The biggest beneficiary has been reservoir surveillance. I will start with an overview of the DAS VSP applications being pursued by industry, connecting business need to technical capabilities and challenges. Then, I will zoom in on one application that has undergone a particularly intense maturation in recent years - 4D DAS VSP for frequent or on demand monitoring in Deepwater. I’ll show some recent examples and discuss the path forward."
Albena Mateeva is a Principle Research Geoscientist and Principle Science Expert - Earth Sciences at Shell. She joined Shell 17 years ago, after completing a PhD in Geophysics at CWP, Colorado School of Mines. The common thread of her career has been developing novel technologies for Borehole Geophysics and Low-Cost Areal Surveillance. Albena was on the Shell R&D team that spearheaded two disruptive new technologies - the Virtual Source some years ago, and DAS VSP more recently. That has led to numerous recognitions, including 3 Best Paper awards from the SEG.
