WowWee HydraQuad from Walmart Review - Is It Any Good?

This quad drifts on the ground and works in the water better than it actually Flies! Unfortunately, when flying it suffers from vortex ring state a lot. Probably doesn't help that it weighs 66.3 grams, has quad bladed props and is oddly shaped. If you own an outdoor pool maybe it could be fun but to add to its obstacles, when this drone loses signal from the transmitter it wants to fly away at full throttle! I would definitely stay away from this one but if you still want it for whatever reason you can find it at your local Walmart and even online.

The whole vortex ring state issue is pretty common for ducted quads in general, you have to be (very) conscious of propwash and careful not to fly in dirty air. Hovering in place is not a strength, but for the most part just maintaining movement is enough to avoid problems. I just picked up 3 of these guys cheap, thinking about maybe modding with a nano FPV camera if they aren't completely awful.

I have a bunch of ducted quad models that don't suffer at all from this issue. None of my tiny whoops suffer and other toy-grades I have even a smaller clone of this very quad, are free from it and fly great! I think it comes down to the thrust to weight ratio. If the quad is light enough with good thrust the less it will suffer from this is what seems to be the deal. Try this one: amzn.to/3mGvmQP
It is a smaller clone with altitude hold that flies a lot better even with altitude hold and no VRS👌🏿💯

@@FrequentFlyerRC likewise. Modern whoops do much better. I think it's combination of better frame/duct design and thrust/weight ratio... The Avata on the other hand... yikes! Esp that yaw washout.

@@chrisscala4221 I have my little theory on yaw washout as well! See, reverse prop direction was originally discovered to help prevent yaw washout in racing drones on TURNS. A sudden rush of air to the SIDE of the quad caused the washout and reversing prop direction fixes this but puts this side area orientation of props outward spin effectively to the front. So.. Now when a rush of air hits toward the side it doesn't washout but now washes out if it hits the FRONT on a dive. In my testing in tiny whoops I found that putting prop direction back to normal washout on dives are eliminated. Nobody pays attention to me the little guy in this regard though but if they just looked at my explanation I think it would make sense 🤷
